This is happening. I will be there as soon as I can. I will also NOT be riding a bike that day. You can’t have it all. Sorry.

wonder if we could get Westover to host a viewing (last HH they had the Tour of California on the outside TV – at our request, I assume).
It was not at our request, it was at their insistence because they knew we were coming. I’m certain we could get them to put it on for us again and will happily set something up once we get back on the 6th. Any preferences on what stage/day?

Definitely do it! We’ll happily give you all our tips/tricks of the visit and make a few recommendations on where to stay/eat/etc..!
We’ve been looking forward to the trip for a while now too! And as our next stop is Nice, and the time trials, we’ll have plenty more photos and stories to tell!

I’m not such an optimist. A lot of these sentences get reduced dramatically due to jail crowding issues. With the cyclist’s consent, I think she should have to visit him or her in the hospital to get a real sense of the damage she has caused (and pay for any lost wages and medical bills).
I think she ought to be forced to bike commute for a while. They could take away her license so she’d have to find another way to get around. THAT would be a HUGE lesson for her. (Along with jail, fines, compensation, and other your-life-is-over-because-you’re-an-idiot punishment.)

I think some intrepid bikers need to offer this woman some free high fives!
(though she’d probably recoil at the crazy scallywags and claim assault)High fives? I’d rather see bike grease *accidentally* appear on her $5000 suit. Then we can hear all about how cycling is also ruining NYC’s iconic fashion industry.

I guess I didn’t make myself clear then. I guess there’s minimal chance I will be riding with groups looking to do high speeds anytime soon – though I do want to ride faster than I do now. I find hills give me lots of trouble – I find the eastbound Custis somewhat stressful – I know thats partly a matter of getting into better shape, which should come with regular commuting, but I also want a bike that makes it easier. My regular commute (I don’t know how often I will do it – I’ve done it once – lets say once a week?) includes the stretch from the Pentagon to Jefferson Memorial, where I definitely feel the grades. So I may be overly sensitive about the weight of my old MTB. (yes, several folks have suggested switching out the tires on the MTB). I picked the Novarra up, and I guess I hoped it would feel noticeably lighter than the MTB. I may have been unrealistic – and the NoVarra did have a rack and fender on it, which the MTB does not.
I can of course aim to get a “real” road bike sometime down the line. Right now I would prefer to spend less than $400.So is the Novarra a really good deal? Should I go pick it up, assuming its a good fit, and not bother hunting for a used bike at my LBS (which specialized in used bike?)
For what it’s worth, I’ve been riding a 25 lb hybrid around for the past 2 years, and switched to a used Cannondale road bike today. It was amazing, I was definitely faster, and the hills we’re SO much easier. I think what some of the others recommend above, about looking for a used road bike that fits you on Craigslist, might be a better deal and more motivating in working your way eastbound on the Custis (which also used to be my trouble spot). You’ll be able to stay at $400 price point, or close, and you’ll get a faster bike that will make things easier. Based on what I think I’ve read, the Novarra might not be a good deal for YOU, even if the price is a deal.
If you do go the Craigslist route, the seller should let you take it out on a good test ride. Ride it right up to the nearest bike shop, explain that you’re thinking of buying it, and ask if they’ll take a quick look for any maintenance, safety or fit issues. They’ll be happy to help you out if they’re not slammed (Saturday afternoons are NOT the best day for this!)

You’re looking at this the wrong way. The proper number of bikes here is S-1, where S is the number that would result in separation from your spouse. Since of course spouses are equal, you each must have the same number of bikes. Obviously N+1 < S, since you can hardly divorce your spouse for wanting the same number of bikes as you want. Therefore it is clear that N will go to infinity. QED. You need a bigger house.
I hate math. I propose a new equation. The proper number of bikes in our marriage is equal to H – 1, where H is the number of bikes crammed into our shed that would cause a honeybadger attack. H = 5.

I propose we have dasgeh expand her arbitration role to this family issue.
If we were to apply the n+1 rule, everybody could have another bike. Four seems like an arbitrary (and even) number, so non fung shui.
I welcome this! 4 came out of my needing only 1 and Marc’s n = 2. Therefore, we have enough as a couple. Given this math, if 4 is enough as a couple and I get a new bike, we have to get rid of one (the Fugi). We will then still have enough. 4. Only I will now have 2 (cannondale + new bike) which means Marc’s n will have to decrease to 1. Sorry, honey. You did this to yourself.

I think that’s a big part of the concern here. My female friend that works in the 1100 building doesn’t feel safe accessing the freight elevator there by herself, or using the bike storage area.
If your friend is nervous about using the freight elevator and/or storage area because she doesn’t feel comfortable, she should definitely work with her HR department and/or whoever in her office liaises with the building’s facilities department. I had a similar concern about our shower situation but a few polite, productive conversations got things remedied. I do suggest she come with a few ideas on how to make things safer/more comfortable. I found it was much easier to say, “This makes me uncomfortable, but this quick, easy, inexpensive fix would really help!” rather than saying, “This doesn’t work for me.”

No, no, no, a thousand times NO! YOU MUST KEEP the Fuji – always have a spare, plus it will be your wet weather bike!
But if I get rid of it, I can get a NEW road bike..! We have a 4 bike limit in our house. And we need to figure out how to hang them so our shed has more space for the bike trailer, bike work station, etc…
