FYI: You can skip the whole Columbia Pike mess by taking the parallel trail that run along S Arlington Mill Drive through Barcroft Park. This brings you out on to the WO&D and you only have to deal with one minor street crossing the entire way. The downside is these trails aren’t really passable after a big rain or if it is snowy/icy.
I have tried this a few times. There is one spot that goes under one of the roads that is quite slippery. I also almost ran over some very tiny dogs a few times when their owners weren’t really paying attention to where they were on the trail near the dog park. So I’ve opted for W&OD the whole way.
I’m just ready for this intersection to be finished. Taking them quite a while to do whatever they are doing.

Three flats in less than 16 hours. That’s a new record for me. First one was last night on the way home. Already running late. Tired baby at home. Wife not happy. Not a time when you really need a flat. Alas… Other two were this AM. One about two miles into my commute in Crystal City. Changed tube and rode on. Second one made itself known as I descended from 14th St Bridge. I could have patched the bad tube I’d just pulled off in CC, but decided I’d just walk the mile and a half to my office from there. Just made it in time for a morning meeting.
All punctures were singular holes on the inside of the tube (i.e., facing the rim and spoke holes) on the rear wheel. I couldn’t find anything wrong with the rim strip or the rim itself upon inspection, but my hypothesis is it’s the plastic SRAM rim strip sliding around and pinching the tube against the rim somehow, so I took the bus to DC Hardware and Bike Shop at lunch and picked up some Velox, which is what I almost always use anyways (compromised getting the SRAM plastic rim strip thing when I did), and a new tube. So, I’ll take out the old strip, clean the inside of the rim real well with a rag, and install Velox tape before heading home this evening and patch up the tubes there. Hopefully that’ll resolve this situation.
It’s all odd because I hadn’t had a flat for almost two years before this (thanks to puncture resistant Schwalbes and Michelin City tires on my bikes). Life keeping me on my toes I suppose.
In fun news, I have class tonight, which I bike to, so I’ll get a chance finally to ride in the dark with my new MagicShine knock-off light.
I had this happen too. Turns out I had a bits of glass that worked it’s way through the tire in one particular area. Didn’t feel it until I turned the tire basically inside out.

This morning I and about 3 other cyclists got shoaled by about 4 runners eastbound on the WOD at Columbia Pike. For some reason, these runners decided to take off quickly through the detour on the south side of Columbia in front of all the cyclists. I mean, REALLY????
Happens to me all the time….

ParticipantI am looking forward to this being completed. I currently come off FMR, get on Glebe, then cross Rt. 1 to get into Crystal City. I am comfortable with this but would rather have as much bike/ped only trail as possible for my commute. My work is at the south end so going get on MVT to the CC waterpark doesn’t make much sense.

Well, looks like we finally crossed paths. Good to see you this morning. I was taking my time with my wife behind me enjoying the perfect temps. Hope you enjoyed your tailwind! See you next time!
Yes…a lovely ride this morning. Nice to see you!

Yep, I have certainly seen you as well… nice to have you on board. I ride the opposite direction to you every day and we have crossed paths many times. I have a few different bikes (usually on a celest Bianchi), but I can be recognized by the neon yellow BikeArlington reflectors on my backpack shoulder straps. What’s your actual name? I’ll give a holler next time we cross paths…. unless you prefer I shout “Hoffsquared”
My name is Melanie…I will watch for you next week!

Greetings, I believe that I have seen you on the W&OD.
Probably. I have been a regular year-round commuter for the past 3-4 years. My setup is pretty recognizable. I am sure that some think — “there goes the bucket lady” when they see me.

ParticipantSo I can see that I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into!
