ParticipantI really, really missed having a regional team. BAFS is how I met most of the people I ride with regularly, and living in PG county I’m unlikely to ever ride regularly with a lot of Virginians. I met a few new people, but I don’t think I met anyone who I’ll now ride with regularly. Our team did manage to meet up, but didn’t ever go for a real group ride. It took a 20-mile ride just to meet! I liked the mileage cap, mostly because it took the pressure off to ride a lot on the weekends (I’m a commuter, and 4 days a week gets me 100 miles, so for me it meant I was more likely to ride *all the way to work* on bad-weather days, more likely to take the long way in on weeks when I had a day off, and forced me to find new routes when my trails were icy). Since balancing the teams doesn’t seem to work, perhaps our efforts are best spent trying to put together regional teams (maybe slicing the area like a pie so that teams with DC folks also contain suburban riders). I think, however, we just need three really large teams: cat lovers, dog lovers, and people who don’t like pets. Then we’d have some real trash-talk.

ParticipantRoute 1 isn’t bike friendly, but the Meadworks is steps from where the NW Branch Trail crosses route 1, so it’s easy to get to. I bike to it a lot– it’s so easy to stop by on my way home (and they have a great selection of board/card games). I suppose I should post a review the next time I bike there, but I always either get the Tart Gwen or the Dragon’s Breath.

If you put the chemical hand warmers in a plastic bag when you’re done riding, the chemical reaction stops (no air), and you can start them again the next time you need them. I’ve had a pair last weeks. I’ve even pulled out last-year’s bag, found it still had hot-hands in it, and was able to use them (presumably about 10 months later). I just use one zip-lock bag all winter.

ParticipantI can do that. I’ll be riding down from Hyattsville– via MBT (or ART if the trail is clear by then and the weather is nice. I have time for the longer route). If anyone else is coming from that direction and wants to meet up, give me a shout.

ParticipantThat’s some commute! What do you teach?

ParticipantChris– you disappeared from our team on the freezingsaddles.org leaderboard!

ParticipantCongratulations, Billy! And WOW Chris! That’s a lot of consecutive days! I inevitably lose days to travel every year, so can’t brag about consistency. If you all live in Virginia, how hard would a HH be in the city? I do sometimes bike to Clarendon (perfect on weeknights since I’m already on the Potomac), too.

ParticipantHey, all. I am Christy Regenhardt. I live in Hyattsville, MD and commute to the Palisades in DC four days a week. This is my fourth BAFS (in five years– I skipped one), and I’m looking forward to forcing myself to ride in miserable weather yet again this year! I’m hoping to do 7 days/100 miles every week (my commute covers the mileage), which should be easy so long as I don’t get sick or injured (or if there’s a blizzard– one of these years I’ll finally break down and buy studded tires). I’m happy to go for longer rides (with a preference for trails or city roads), and also happy to drag people up to my neck of the woods (especially great if you’re a beer/mead/gin/coffee lover– Vigilante Coffee, Franklin’s Brewery, Streetcar 82 Brewery, Maryland Meadworks, and Sangfroid Distillery are all within a mile of each other and are bike-trail adjacent). I live right on the Anacostia trail system, so spend as much time as possible wandering there.
And “history geek” is because I’m a historian. I work at GWU (we have a little campus behind Georgetown) at the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project.
Also, this morning I apparently really like parenthetical statements. I blame my frozen brain.December 18, 2018 at 2:54 pm in reply to: RSVP on this thread — FS Welcome Celebration – Thursday 10 Jan. 2019 #1092361historygeek
ParticipantI’ll be there (and will come early to help set up, but will have to leave before clean-up).

I’m having trouble registering for freezing saddles. Can’t find the submit button at the end of the form. Any one have suggestions? I brought out my bike gloves and bright jacket this morning on the bike to work. (: Started noticing the other cyclists and got super excited for freezing saddles!
See http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?13906-DRAFT-2019-registration-form-is-up-please-review! (tl;dr: the form is currently a draft. There is no submit button because it’s not yet live)

+1 for reflective lime green merkins
Are we giving out a special prize for those wearing reflective lime green merkins (so that they’re visible) when it’s below 32 degrees, or are we letting natural selection sort those people out from the gene pool?

ParticipantAre we giving out a prize for those wearing their reflective lime green merkins so we can all see them when it is below 32 degrees, or are we just letting natural selection weed them out from the gene pool?

Are we giving extra points for those who ride with merkins exposed when it is under 32 degrees out, or are we handing out Darwin awards to those individuals, instead?
