Over Christmas, my daughter encouraged me to try Noom. Much like MFP, it allows meal/calorie tracking, but it has a psychology component that I’ve never seen before. Rather than a diet, it attempts to get you to change your way of thinking and habits. Thus far, I’m down 14 pounds since Christmas. I know that rate of loss is not sustainable, but I’m happy with it to this point. Other than Noom, I’m trying to ride more consistently (every day so far and only one day under 10 miles.) Tracking everything I put in my mouth has made me much more aware of all the snacking I did without thinking about it. It has also made me consider if I really want/need something to eat or if I’m just bored. Lastly, it has made me more aware of how often I ate multiple portions without considering it. I like that Noom considers that you will still have cravings and can fulfill them on an occasional basis without falling off the wagon and being run over.

If you want to try Noom, it is essentially free for two weeks. When you initially sign up, use the code EMAIL99 and it will offer you a full year at ~$150. IF you decide it’s not for you, quit in two weeks and get a full refund or a prorated refund after that.

What are all yall’s strategies? I’m using myfitnesspal to count macros. Oh and I’m weighing my food. I’m off to a decent start so far but I feel off the wagon a bit tonight. I had a hot chicken sammy and fries from the new restaurant around the corner Wooboi.

Anyone doing intermittent fasting? What about something unusual like a cabbage diet?

I’m in as well. Starting weight 236 target 226 by end of FS. Shall we celebrate our weight loss with pizza and beer?

    Not till I hit 190

    3) Stationary trainer rides don’t count. Mark your rides as such or include #NOBAFS in the title to exclude them. Take your bike outside and ride it some distance across the surface of the earth in order to earn points. Manual entries will also not be accepted.

I have NOT tried to ride it, but driving by late yesterday, there appeared to be police tape cordoning off the tidal basis and they were allowing pedestrians and cyclists on and off the 14th St bridge. Unfortunately, like a lot of things, it likely depends on the particular officer you encounter and to a certain extent, how you interact with that officer.

You could try going up to L’Enfant from the Wharf at 9th St SW, cross the Francis Case Memorial pedestrian bridge into East Potomac, then take Ohio over to East Basin drive. I imagine that would route you around the road blocks on the DC side. Not much choice coming from the Virginia side.

How about just don’t draft? 1-2 bike lengths back should be enough if you need to hang out, but other than that man/woman up to fight the headwind (if there is one) yourself.

Perhaps there is a definition issue. To me, 1 bike length back is still drafting, 2 bike lengths, not so much, but I do know some folks who consider following for any significant length of time at any visible distance to be “drafting.” As mentioned by someone else, riding any closer than 1 bike length to someone you don’t know and understand their habits is begging for a sudden slowdown or stop resulting in a problem.

Wasn’t me as I haven’t ridden yet today and I almost always call my pass, but there are times that I very slowly catch a rider in front of me and just don’t have enough of a speed advantage to cleanly pass them and move ahead, so I do end up drafting sometimes. What would you prefer me to do in that case?

I kinda like the point system this year, but I definitely rode more last year! I don’t like the idea of teams getting negative points for teammates to miss a day – that would penalize the folks that do ride more rather than provide incentive for the rider that misses a day or two or more.

If you can handle the truth, that is unless of course a “Code Red” is implemented.

I like the idea of the current point system in that is seems to encourage riding daily (it has for me), but doesn’t cap points for those who ride long miles. I will say I rode more miles last year, because I was trying to hit the cap every week (and I did.) Since there is no cap this time, and the most efficient points ride seems to be around 10 miles, I haven’t been motivated to go much more as a weekly average. In point of fact, my current weekly average is, you guess it, 70 miles. The point system has encouraged me to ride more than 1 mile, even on sleaze days. my average sleaze ride is closer to 4 miles. Ultimately, if there is no mileage cap, those people with the time and motivation to ride long distance are going to rise to the top and if there ends up being more than one or two on a team, that team will rise to the top. Perhaps a mileage cap is needed, but maybe more than the 100 miles we used last year. It could be interesting to run data based on a 200 mile per week cap and see what that did to the scores.
