ParticipantTo the gent riding up CCT this morning wearing the polka dot jersey. Apologies if I am mistaken, but I believe you are in violent conflict with Rule #16.

ParticipantI didn’t stop to take a picture, but there was a motorscooter parked on the 4MRT this morning at the Mount Vernon underpass, with a tent set up slightly off the trail. Cheap camping at its best!

ParticipantI’ll try to stop by and meet a few folks. Haven’t really had a good opportunity until now.

I just got back from a week near Burnsville, NC, which is NE of Asheville, close to the TN border. About half of my extended family cycles, so there were people out on bikes every day. No one encountered problems with cars, and I definitely found drivers to be more respectful and responsible when driving around cyclists than you see around here. Especially on curvy mountain roads. Lots of drivers waited until safe and passed with wide berth.
i was recently in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN and had the same experience on the backroads that the tourists don’t use, but when I had to use a “tourist road”, it was just like being here. Seems the locals are courteous, but the visitors are not.

ParticipantGotta love that warning. Even though you have the green light, drivers probably won’t care.

ParticipantI nominate the two guys on mountain bikes descending a grassy hill from GW Parkway onto the MVT this morning as DB of the day. One nearly t-boned me while the other jumped on the trail a couple of feet in front if me going about 10 MPH slower than I was.

Know the rules, live by them, espresso, espresso, repeat.
Where can a newby find the rules or is it trial by fire?

ParticipantLots of bugs out this morning attempting to become protein snacks.

Yeah, Strava can’t handle bridge elevations (ever look at the elevation when you cross Key Bridge and see the big dip on one side and climb on the other? It thinks you rode right through the Potomac)
It never occurred to me that this is one of the differences between my Garmin recorded elevation and the elevation that shows up on various mapping programs, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing it out!

This is basically geocaching (which can be a pretty fun cycling activity) where the beer is the swag
I stopped geocaching because the reward just wasn’t there for me any more. This however could be rewarding!

ParticipantAnyone up for a local version?

ParticipantMe: going 25 MPH, the speed limit, on RCP Pkwy between Water St and the Ohio merge.
You: driver of a ubiquitous black Suburban, passing me on the left, darting to the right in front of me, and hitting your brakes due to slower traffic in front of me.
Me: check traffic, move left for the Ohio merge and now passing you on the left.
You: yelling out your window, “Idiot!”
Though you leave no doubt as to you status as a Subject Matter Expert sir, I do not accept your assessment.

ParticipantVery cool to see a Penny-farthing on the 4MRT near Shirlington this morning.

ParticipantIt appears to be a U-lock key. It had a distinctive tag attached.
