ParticipantRoll call-
Hans is doing some silly 4:30 am Leesburg excursion, THEN going to FMCCIII, THEN going to work, I’ll be there with a friend at about 7:15-7:30. Leaving Revolution bikes in Clarendon at 6 sharp.
Who else? Culimerc? I had lunch with your brother today thus should have coffee with you tomorrow and round out my Hoofnagles for the week.

ParticipantHa! Hans, you are my number 1 rival… of course, I’m behind or at a draw with you on every segment but I’m good with that…

Yup. The heart rate monitor alone makes it a great purchase. But look out, the Garmin is the road to Perdition; you’ll be pinging Tim for power meter recommendations if you don’t look out.
I have a ANT+ HR, Speed and Cadence sensor (the Wahoo BikePack), could also and a PowerTap meter. They all seem to work pretty well- battery life (4 hours) and elevation are my issues. Cost all in (ex-phone) was about $250- that’s getting close(ish) to an ebay 510. Biggest plus for me is that I always have my app in my pocket so will record MTB, neighborhood rides, unicycle rides, whaddever.

Wait, so why won’t the Strava “correct elevation” feature work for this?
(Because people would scam it and not correct their elevation??)
First, I’d never do it (I’m data lazy) but even if I did, how would I know the “right” elevation unless I had Hans with me?
There’s also THIS

ParticipantGreat post on Strava blocking outside APIs:

Angrymaker for me for sure, off I go to cancel that Premium BS

ParticipantSo, I think that you are going to have a difficult time normalizing non Garmin elevation- as Hozn said my now ex-commute (Clarendon to Sterling) home is about 1500 st of climbing based on Hozn’s Garmin 510- on my Cyclemeter + iPhone 4 with ANT+ sensors I get 1/3 the elevation and even within that there is huge variation (even though I rode exactly the same route). As a result, I’ve given up on any of the Strava elevation challenges and probably wouldn’t participate in this one.
That said, if someone did want to try and normalize, my overlap with Hans might be a good baseline- median Guy elevation via phone compared to Hozn Garmin 510 elevation over something like 75 rides in the last 12 months on exactly the same route is about as close as you’d get to statistical significance. But that only covers AT&T iphone4 elevation, I’d wager that Android phones and other carriers would have a different result.

http://app.strava.com/activities/22526290 = 631FWIW, if you are getting serious about tracking and data, just buy a 510. I spent nearly as much on iphone cases, extended batteries and sensor sets as I would have on a proper Garmin

Here is my L street experience this morning. I always tell myself that every car is about to hit me. But, that makes life exciting right?
]Can you post one of those where everything goes perfectly? I’m trying to convince my better half to commute up L and the videos of woe aren’t helping things… maybe under a separate thread entitled “How the Perfectly Safe and Sane L-street cycletrack changed my life for the better while saving me $300/month in parking”

GuyContinental somehow spotted me this morning on his way back from FCCIII, turned around and chased me down, and then rode a few miles to chat before he back-tracked to Arlington…. Oh yeah, did I mention he was working from home today? Yep, He rode out to Herndon in the rain just to enjoy some Java with fellow forum members…. you are a fine example of Rule #9 sir… hats off!
Just trying to guilt you into trying out FMCC III is all! Thanks for not mentioning that I neglected to wear one-iota of rain gear and thus, looked like a drowned, partially hypothermic rat…

I think I will be ending the epic rides with T200 this year, given impending second child, but moco sounds like a good nomination.
The key is “impending second child” once you actually “have” one your life is over for the next two years, but until then… Perhaps I could be convinced to pant, whine, moan (and encourage) behind you through the Epic…

Kill Bill + Total 200 + Freezing Saddles + __?___ = Grand Slam of Local Endurance Biking for the Year. If you complete all 4 you get a bronzed banana.
Hozn? They are calling for youuuuuuu…. Dirt opted out of Freezing saddles, did anyone else actually do all three? Tim?

Yeah, I believe that this guy has been discussed previously. I think the feedback was that he does good work, but can be a bit scattered so it helps to stay on top of him.
Well, he does spend all day working with paint and heavy chemicals…
FWIW, I did not end up using him (did the old rattle can) but he was pretty responsive… in 2009.

I would imagine if you check out some motorcycling forums you could find a good painter and/or powder coater pretty easily.
Orr just stick with the one stop informational shopping of Bike Arlington:
2009 Email exchange with a local a powder coater
“Hi Kevin,
Road bike frames and hardtail mountain bike frames start at $155 and rigid forks are $50. This includes chemical stripping to prevent blasting damage, careful media blasting to clean the substrate and give it a nice anchor profile to maximize powder adhesion, masking (threads, bores, bosses, faces) for a smooth rebuild, powder of your choice, and a single color/coat application. Graphics, decals, multi-colors/coats, chrome preservation and other specialty services are additional and vary with the complexity of the job. Please note that most types of carbon fiber cannot be powder coated due to the oven curing temperature. Liquid painting of carbon forks to match the frame powder are $80-$140 depending on color.
Turnaround times for on-hand colors (gloss black is stocked) are generally 1-3 days. For colors that need to be ordered, it takes 3-4 days to receive the powder, and 1-3 days for coating. We do not need your parts while the powder is on order. Turnaround can often be same day if we schedule the work. Turnaround for graphic work, liquid paint, and other specialty jobs can be longer and have to be estimated individually.
Thanks!

ParticipantWhoa… 6.5 hours at $0.50 makes it a very expensive thingy. Shapeways was considerably less. We’ll see about costs in DC, I’ll post when I go and my findings.
GuyContinental
ParticipantYup- 30 seconds and a form and I have my card!
It opens on the 17th so I’ll try the following week, probably during an early lunch.

Wow… anyone with a DC library card wanna learn about 3D printing with me? As an added bonus you’ll get a first addition freehub tool thingy of dubious quality and functionality
As a side note, any bets on how long it takes before someone produces something obscene in that thing?
