Sorry we missed you. We had a guy go down right at the start so that delayed us a couple of minutes from normal. If you get to the Custis intersection before 6:15 it’s a pretty safe bet we won’t have rolled through and you could turn up Custis and ride towards Ballston. We should be fairly easy to identify, generally 3 to 4 people going west; winter jerseys are red, red, red, neon yellow (that’s me).

Yes, “Guy” did indeed go down, all of 10′ from his front door. It ruled.

Only saw PeteD at Best Buns at 7:30. I was late and added an extra six miles since I got to the Columbia Pike underpass and realized I left my work ID at home and had to ride back to get it. Nothing wrong with a few extra miles, but it meant I couldn’t stay for coffee and I didn’t see the CX group at Gravelly. Did see Matt Aune heading west on the 4MRT connector before Shirlington.

We were there (CX’ing) -Must have been on the GW parkway side when you cruised through. Matt did a lap on skinny tires and then headed off for HDCC. Much fun (err pain?) was had by all but no coffee…

(with some staying for the CX racing)

Not sure I’d go so far as to call it “racing” In my case it will be more like “flailing quickly”

    Fenders will be fine, Dickie.

I am not sure I want to ride my cross tires the 17 miles of pavement (plus 17+ miles home) just to do 45 minutes of CX laps. I might strap the CX wheels to my back, we will see.

Rule #5- Skip the CX tires.

Will 6:45 work? If not 7-7:15 is fine.

I’m in, barring any last minute early morning meetings. How about wed morning at gravelly point around 7:15am?

. I’m game regardless- but earlier would be better if we are going to hit HDCC too. Will? Matt? Hans?

I just took a bit of hooky time to explore- great course and indeed a lung buster although in four laps I never did figure out the first 1/4 mile (need to watch the video again I guess). Anyone up for a pre-HDCC or FMCC CX Cat-6 extravaganza?

Saw GuyContinental on his “long way around” commute to work.

Yeah, that ended poorly… crawled into my home office 8.5 hours after I left. Significant time spent swooning somewhere out toward Ashburn. 99.1 miles. Didn’t have even that last .9 in me.

Also saw Hillman and Steve Eunpu (Mr. 13K miles so far this year on a hybrid)

Except for the prospect of losing teeth in a wreck, the previously mentioned collapsed chest and sketchy assembly, I think it’s awesome, but a small puerile part of me can’t help thinking of Mr. Garrison

I used to ride WB on the WOD every morning and had terrible trouble with hundreds of inbound commuters with high lumen lights blinding me- I think that I’m particularly sensitive since I had Lasik some years back. The trick that I discovered and now swear by, is the goofy “elite” cycling cap plus clear lenses with UV protection. The tiny cap brim is very close to your eyes so ducking your head just a touch blocks out most of the glare and the very slight tint of the glasses cuts out a bit more. The MTB helmets with plastic brims are too far from your face- good for sun, pretty much worthless for oncoming lights.

I use a cheap PI cotton cap in warm weather and (thanks to Hozn’s recommendation) have a “favorite gear” Rothera cap with fleece lining and ear flaps.

I always wondered what the hell those caps were good for… now I understand.

Three seasons in on mine (used them this morning). Zero shifting problems even with thick OR liners under them. My only issue is that they don’t keep my thumbs warm enough. Fingers are sweaty, thumbs frozen dead. However, I have terrible hand circulation so YMMV.

I’m asking Mrs Santa for a pair of electric heated gloves… pretty sure I haven’t been good enough to get them but it’s worth asking ;-) Also ran across these: http://www.alago.co.uk/ but I can’t imagine having to boil then dry my gloves every day (although maybe they could use it)

Just thought that I’d post a street view of the intersection- it’s pretty messed up:

    http://goo.gl/maps/HcV62

I used to ride through here every morning and had numerous close calls with cars squeezing me out (at extremely high speed) at the weird bump out after the first driveway (in front of the gray van). There you are cruising along and suddenly your bike lane basically dead ends into a curb forcing you to merge into traffic. What seems like an obvious detour (enter the MUP and then crosswalk before Wakefield) actually isn’t- the cut on that driveway has about a 1″ rise to it that could wreck you if you approached it at an oblique angle with road tires. Then the sidewalk has been a mess there for years (note the cone) and the curb cut badly eroded. Even so, my MO after about a year was to just bunny hop the driveway and rumble over the bad pavement.

Maybe the trail re-alignment will fix this???

I’d be happy to escort you (or more likely get dragged along) to West street but work is killing me so it’s FMCCII. In fairness the round trip out there plus coffee takes roughly 3.5 hours…

Way to represent Steve! I was at FMCCII (after a very short ride…)- workload is preventing my usual 3 hour Friday excursion and Hans is out for a bit on paternity leave. You’ll need to agitate in my stead to get the numbers back up to a respectable half-dozen.
