ParticipantIn-office space heater = indispensible bike commuting equipment.

ParticipantThe editing software I’m using for PC (Camtasia) is slightly more expensive than the camera. Works well for me so far, though.

ParticipantHow bad is the problem of undocked or unattended CaBi bikes being stolen or vandalized? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a bike station at every Metrorail station, so people could get off the train, use a bike for local errands, and get back on the train?

ParticipantLovely this morning, eh? And to top it off, my third flat tire in the last month. And this after going all winter without a flat…
My apologies if I gave a plumber’s butt view to anyone on H street this morning while I fixed it.

Participantacc — I donated a brand new set of finders to Proteus bikes in College Park when I bought my new bike last month. (I prefer the mudstripe of pride to the rattle of fenders.) They’re for this bike: http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/thebikes/road/aurora/11_bosanova.html
Chances are they’d just give them to you if they still have them and they fit your bike.Greenbelt
ParticipantI’ve got an 8 gig SD card, and I get about 85 minutes in HD, so that sounds about right: 10 minutes = 1gig roughly at 1080.
I forget which setting I set the camera at when I got it — probably just whatever it was on default. When I pull a video into the editing software I think it says the recording dimensions are 1280 by 960

ParticipantCoincidentally, I just put up a video showing my route the other day. However, I take more roundabout way than the Google map Joe just put up — I take a short stretch of the NW branch trail to 38th Street, then cut through side streets of Brentwood/Mount Rainer/NE DC, then take the Metropolitan Branch trail down to Capitol Hill.

ParticipantWhat a nice report! I’m convinced that a LOT of potential riders in Prince George’s county and in eastern parts of DC just don’t know very much about the trail infrastructure that already exists, and that as a result, we often don’t put on enough pressure for local governments to make improvements to signage and connections to make it easier and better known. When I tell people I commute from outside the beltway in northern Prince George’s county to downtown DC in a little over an hour and without riding in heavy traffic, people sometimes don’t believe me! They didn’t know it was possible.
I think a lot of people out here on the east sides of DC would love to ride, instead of crowding on to trains or buses or getting stuck in traffic to get around, but they just don’t know the best places. For example, I’m shocked how many students reverse commute out to University of MD from DC on metrorail and then cram on to shuttle buses to get to campus. Many could ride to and from DC if they only knew the tricks of the trail system. It’s a beautiful ride.

ParticipantDetailed weather radar helps. I like the one from Andrews AFB. Today, I’ll stay late, see if the weather clears by 7pm, and if not, bail on to Metro. But I thinking it’ll be all dry by 7pm, just a hunch.

ParticipantI see lots of CaBi riders — most seem pretty responsible to me. Some a little inexperienced maybe. I’ve tried to educate a couple about staying out of the door zone in bike lanes next to parked cars, and to not move up in to the blind spot of possible right turners. I’ve been surprised how fast the bikes can go — I’ve never ridden one, but they must be pretty decent bikes.

ParticipantI think of work as a long-ish break at the turnaround point. Despite the problems, how many other people can say their commute is the best part of their workday?
As for February, just think of it as getting all the speed, exertion, and cold of snow skiing. Except without paying for a lift ticket!

ParticipantIs the street the best way through the park? I hadn’t been there before and was just improvising. It was a beautiful day, and my choices were
a. keep recording until the SD card was full, or
b. turn around and go to work.I decided to keep recording…
There were a couple police cars in the street facing the other way, so I couldn’t tell if it was one way or if I’d have to hop a curb anyway if I stayed on the street…
Agree markings to show how best to get through the park and reconnect with the track would be helpful.

ParticipantWhen I crashed the other week, the first thing my wife asked was “Are you OK?”
The first thing my kids asked was “Did you have your camera on?”
(No, unfortunately. No viral youtube sensation…)

ParticipantGoPro Hero camera. And yeah, 3 times speedup hides how slow I really am. Definitely an ego booster…

ParticipantI love the calorie burn meter on the cascade challenge. I’m a newbie at longer-distance commuting, but have caught the bug completely. Got 2,209 miles on my computer since I installed it on Jan 3, plus a couple hundred more on other bikes. So that’s a pace for nearly 7k miles this year if I can keep it up. Main motivations? Saving $10 a day on Metro fares and getting grimaces when I “complain” about how I have to keep eating constantly to avoid additional weight loss. Pre-ride breakfast, second breakfast, first lunch, second lunch, pre-ride snack, dinner, bedtime snack. I’m getting hungry…
