ParticipantSince your nifty new camera also has audio perhaps you could narrate your turns as you come upon them. Just a thought. It’s actually pretty good view of the ride even skipping ahead on some parts. Thanks for taking the time to create and post it.

ParticipantThanks — wil do. As I figure out how to use the editing software, I’ll add narration or text captions. The mic on the camera doesn’t seem to capture much other than bike noise. Which is OK, I think, since you can’t hear me swearing when I crunch a gear change or panting trying to get up a hill.

ParticipantThis is great stuff, thanks. I was actually trying to get from College Park -UMD campus to downtown DC today, but decided to take metro because I didn’t know a good route. What I’m most unsure about is getting from the Northwest Branch trail to the Met Branch trail – after that I’m home free. But I’m nervous that roads like Bladensburg or Rhode Island look super scary to ride on, and I’m admittedly timid when cars travel fast. I much prefer car-free trails, and am willing to go out of my way to ride on them.
Any chance you could put this in a google maps route? I’m much better at the birds-eye view. Visual learner, I guess.

ParticipantI’m not very good with Google (or any technology really), but here’s an attempt to show the link to the map. So suggestions on how better to do this appreciated. Even if this works, these directions aren’t perfect — they got a little jumbled in spots. But is basically the route I took in the video. If this doesn’t work, please feel free to suggest how better to create a map.

ParticipantHey, thanks!

ParticipantSo after some experimentation with video editing software, I was able to figure out how to compress the length of the video route examples, and also add in captions for the turns.
Here’s Greenbelt to DC by my scenic route (in HD even):

ParticipantThis is GREAT! THANK YOU!! (although I can’t see a link to the compressed version). I tried riding out to Greenbelt from DC once and it was NOT a pleasant ride. I didn’t know about that trail at the time. I’m inspired to try your route now.
I still think we need a more direct way to get through the CUA-Union Station funnel (roughly paralleling Rhode Island Ave). That part of the city is really really bad for biking. I wish WABA would put some attention there.

ParticipantIt could be that the youtube embeds aren’t working. Here is old fashioned link to the vimeo version:
DC to Greenbelt (via MBT, CUA area, Anacostia Tributary trails)

ParticipantSo I know I’m two months late to the party but the search bar is my friend, eh?
I’m looking to commute from College Park to downtown all summer…I ventured the safest way for a gal by herself was probably just taking Rhode Island all the way down, but these videos are still a great resource, so thanks

BarbnDC just mentioned in another thread that you can go from College Park to downtown DC using trails. I don’t have experience with it myself, but looked it up on Google Maps. If this long link doesn’t work, go to maps.google.com, click “get directions,” type in start and end points, and choose the bike icon. http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=7403+Hopkins+Avenue,+College+Park,+MD+20740+(University+of+Maryland)&daddr=East+Capitol+Street+Northeast,+Washington+D.C.,+DC+20515+(U.S.+Capitol)&hl=en&geocode=FbH5UgIdhu1p-yHlVzNBCL_dXCllG9ITuca3iTFMZku8Gt5OtA%3BFUNpUQIdyvpo-yGQV-Yc2WDSAQ&mra=pd&dirflg=b&sll=38.939294,-76.986881&sspn=0.115896,0.123081&ie=UTF8&ll=38.935111,-76.964035&spn=0.115902,0.123081&z=13&lci=bike

ParticipantCoincidentally, I just put up a video showing my route the other day. However, I take more roundabout way than the Google map Joe just put up — I take a short stretch of the NW branch trail to 38th Street, then cut through side streets of Brentwood/Mount Rainer/NE DC, then take the Metropolitan Branch trail down to Capitol Hill.

ParticipantI’m heading from Falls Church, VA to The UMUC Inn and Conference Center for a few days next week. Does anyone recommend a route other than the standard one given by google maps to get from Falls Church, VA to the University of Maryland University College area in College Park, MD?

I was all ready to go nuts on it, but that route actually isn’t bad. If anything it’s a few too many turns and different streets to get through the city. It would be a little out of your way but might be faster to go down the Mall to Louisiana Ave in front of the Capitol to 1st St NE, turn on M St NE then to the Met Branch Trail, then the standard route to the NW Branch Trail – http://ridewithgps.com/routes/784592

My neighbor and another friend of mine who work in College Park and Greenbelt take something close to this route. Bladensburg Rd is not for the faint of heart or weak of leg, and New York Ave is downright terrifying. It’s longer but I really prefer the MBT route unless it’s first thing on a Sunday morning or similar traffic conditions.

ParticipantI ended up relying a bit too much on the GPS, and it didn’t plot a route from NY ave to the MBT entrance on R St, so I panicked a bit in there, but it worked out pretty well. Also of note, that ‘trail’ at the end of Calverton is really a rocky gulch, fit only for the most intrepid of mountain bikers. My 25C tires were no match.
