    The other Jeff here. :)

I live near Wheaton, and work near the White Flint Metro. I’m also running the #survivor pointless prize.
2017 was my return to the bike after being put in the ICU by a car in August 2016. Even with that I was able to ride over 1000 miles in 2016. This will be my second dip into the insanity of Freezing Saddles.

My goal is two commute days a week. At least one sleaze ride on one of the non-commute days, and one weekend/group ride every fortnight.

Hope to meet the rest of you on the road soon!

    Welcome Jeff! Rubber side down…

I think all agree Ricky should get double miles on the dirt and bonus for the socks.

Even colder this morning — 7 degrees at 9am after a morning low of 4 above!

Thanks, SteveO I think our Google calendar was a bit out of date so I’ll check that.

    This weekend’s social rides are:

Saturday 11am ride to downtown College Park for lunch probably at Ledo’s pizza (there is beer). This is only a few miles since it will be super cold still I think.
    Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/521066088251685/

Sunday 9am mountain bike meetup at Fairland Regional (behind the ice house)
    Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/784708798375494/

PS. the trails are plowed in College Park!

Anyone interested in a convoy from College Park (here’s looking at you Greenbelt)?

I’ll probably be at work so will just ride over from Union Station. But happy to lead the convoy home…

I didn’t stop for pictures, but the wood bridges all through the Anacostia Tributary trails and at least one cement bridge on the ART are deceptively treacherous. I usually attack snow covered bridges at speed. Counting yesterday’s coffee ride and this morning’s commute, my I think my success rate since this last storm is about 13 out of 14.

This is a great discussion, and I really like these ideas.

To keep the creative juices flowing, try a simple exercise that’s often used in various contexts to re-imagine an existing system:

Imagine you are creating a fun winter riding game that is intended to get people out on their bikes in weather they might otherwise not have ridden in, encourage people to create side games and fun activities, go on rides for beer or coffee or donuts, engage online (and in person) with their teammates, trash talk their opponents and all-in-all be part of a supportive and fun community of friends in a myriad of ways.

Create a scoring system for this game. Blank slate. Assume no technical constraints or pre-existing conditions.

Bonus points for people over age 55, more than 200lbs, on group rides with other FS participants, and for everyday riding. There, I win.

As of this morning, the new pavement on the ART between Armentrout road and the Bladensburg marina is finished and smooth as a baby’s butt. I think they removed both bollards from underneath the bridge, but I was so entranced by the fresh pavement I didn’t even notice and didn’t stop for pictures.

Am I interpreting the picture correctly, that they’re actually installing a double bollard?

    Is this an MNCPCC project?

Yes, double bollards, particularly to discourage trailers and wheelchairs.

No, not MNCPCC — I think this is being required by the same PG DPW engineers who originally required the developer to install a curb. I know for a fact that not all of our county engineers are morons, since one of them helped us get the prior curbing removed. However…

Ah, another jurisdiction that apparently ignores the federal guidance that bollards should be a last resort, when markings have proved insufficient. And what a particularly stupid installation this appears to be.

I’m not quite as opposed to these ones since they’re in inherently low-speed areas at the head of the trail on each end. But they’ll still very annoying for anyone with a trailer or anyone in a wheelchair. And for city maintenance vehicles. I’m still trying to figure out who requires this — I know for a fact that the developer does not want to spend any more money putting in required stuff and then having to pay to take it out again when we see how stupid it is.

One bollard removed, but pinch flat hazard until it’s repaved or filled in. Also new bollards being installed on the Greenbelt connector trail between Branchville ave and Cherrywood lane.
