ParticipantI just walked around the grocery store this morning with my right pants cuff tucked into my sock. Should I stop doing that? At least I took off my helmet (and disabled the blinky light attached to it).

Go buy it before it disappears. That way it will be in safe hands until the original owner can be found. I’m sure that person will reimburse you the $20 to get it back.
I agree and that’s why I was posting here. But location and work schedule won’t let this happen for me today.

ParticipantCraigslist bike with Rohloff and Brooks saddle for $20? Someone missing a Bianchi?

ParticipantI’m not a bike mechanic (there are some on this forum who are), but I don’t think you should change your cassette without doing the chain rings (and typically chain) at the same time. So in your chase if this is a new chain and you just replace the cassette the chain might not be meshing right on the (front) chain ring.
General info – When your chain wears it stretches and causes the other gear teeth to wear slightly. If you haven’t changed a chain in a long time you may find the new chain does not mesh quite as well as it did with the worn chain. Sometimes the new chain is so unmatched from the worn teeth that it will slip or fall off when you pedal after putting on the new chain. This is typically a problem if you keep changing chains but not the rest of the drivetrain.

ParticipantCould it be loose pedals, loose chain ring bolts or play in bottom bracket? Those are all really quick to check. Did you check for stiff links when you put the chain on? I find on my IGH (single rear cog) that I get an odd vibration for the first 50 miles after installing a new chain. Probably due to stiff links or (in my case) too high tension.

ParticipantOK, I rode nearly every day last year, but not very far. I didn’t participate in any events, group rides, happy hours and the like. The scoring rules are set up so my short frequent rides put me as far ahead as someone who rode 2x week for 10+ miles. This should be about getting people out in the cold using their bike for transportation. I reject the idea of making it more dependent on long miles or events. I’d rather see more rain/snow/temperature-driven points to entice people to get out there every day.

ParticipantI’m glad to hear you aren’t injured. I’m disappointed at the police response. You have property damage of at least $1k and they should be doing more.

ParticipantYou need to let the FFX DPZ folks know that you want to preserve access to the trail. They’ll work with the developer as long as citizens keep pressure on the process. You can also contact the District Supervisor (Hunter Mill). Trails and Streams Committee would also be a good point of contact to help.

Lake Fairfax is a different beast. Connecting it to the W&OD via paving doesn’t really serve a major commuting/utility need. I guess the argument is “its easier to ride a bike into the park”, but I don’t see the point (since probably 99% of the people riding bikes at lake fairfax are MTBers in the first place, so its not like they need or want a paved connection to the W&OD). And connecting into the park doesn’t get you anywhere useful (you can exit onto Hunters Mill or Baron Cameron, neither of which are remotely bike friendly).
Oh, I see your logic. Yeah, I’m thinking about getting bike tourists and families from the W&OD up to the campground. The current singletrack trail near the W&OD is not well marked nor promoted from what I can tell.
Paved/unpaved aside, if there are things that could make the park better for (any kinds of) cyclists, now would also be a good time to ask. They responded the next day to my comment with a “thanks.”

I believe I will comment. I’d like to note that I don’t see that there’s a way to pave a trail to the W&OD without either paving over trails currently used for mountain biking or paving through wooded parkland adjacent to Colvin Run. (Gravel could work, but portions of the trail are steep, and the gravel would like wash out.) Perhaps that’s an okay tradeoff in the mind of some; just pointing out that it is a tradeoff.
I would discourage you from not suggesting something you’d like to see based on your understanding of what is possible. Engineers can figure stuff out if it’s a priority. Sorry just my Product Management background coming out there..
There are already some wide stone dust trails/fire roads in the park. Why not try to connect them to get park access?

ParticipantI thought “Starve Feed Order” was a random group of words assembled by an AI to get us to click on it. It worked.

Oh, two more: https://www.facebook.com/Twinpanzee and https://www.facebook.com/rocketfrogbrewing both in Sterling. Twinpanzee is open now but not looking all that bikeable. RocketFrog is close to Crooked Run in Sterling.

That being said – even with my previous bike (Breezer Beltway
, I had to be mindful of who worked on it. For example, at the shop where I bought it, some of the mechanics were flummoxed (or just not familiar) with that particular setup, so when I was having bottom bracket issues, I had to schedule it for the owner to take a look at it. Partially based on that experience, and acknowledging that I was buying something online anyway, I went into this purchase knowing that I may have to be “on my own” as far as a lot of the maintenance goes.
I asked a bike shop to dip-lube by Shimano inter-3 hub (with coaster brake). They reassembled it wrong and ruined it, then blamed me for asking them to work on it. They ordered new internals and put it back together. So yeah, I don’t think I’ll have anyone here in Northern VA take apart my 8 speed hub.
It’s great to hear pinion has a US service center. That’s what I was wondering. Thanks for all of the info.

Nope – I got the P.18 (I figured if I’m taking the plunge and ordering a bike online from overseas, I may as well really go for it), so it’s the original machined aluminum block rather than the cast magnesium in the newer C-line models. Since I’m not the lightest to begin with, and I’m often pulling a trailercycle with a 6 year old, I don’t really notice the extra weight
Ha Ha, you’re explaining you are not a weight weenie to a guy who rides a 50 lb Dutch Bike! Did you ask any bike shops if they’d touch it if you needed it to be serviced?
