I KNEW you would say that! …and I was right! It’s just one more thing I like about you.

Mystery solved!
Anyone else see this undesired “smoothing” of my drawing rides on STRAVA, say compared to the jpg files I post on the forum?? I am shocked! I always see my drawing with full street by street detail! When I look at others’ rides on STRAVA I always see street by street detail of their rides.
Honestly I’d like to know if anyone else has noticed what Chris_S sees! If so, I’m going to contact STRAVA and find out what’s going on. Thank you for your help. Any documentation, such as the screen shot that chris posted would be very helpful. Thanks everyone.

44.5 miles Full RideI was looking at Strava posts and I saw George Lewis’ ride entitled, “04/16/2014 Washington, DC” http://www.strava.com/activities/131045879 It reminded me of a duck’s body, but the head was just a square shape. I send George a message saying that all he needed was a little fine-tuning and a new head and the result would be a STRAVA art ride of a rubber ducky!. I invited him to redo this ride together, Easter Sunday. Well, George couldn’t make it, and Easter was the perfect day for this subject, so I rode it alone. This ride stretched from the heart of Georgetown (Duckie’s backside) to Adams Morgan (Duckie’s beak) Along the way I saw plenty of embassies, hotels, and some fine looking homes! The tip of Duckie’s head actually touches Kalorama Circle! I saw Bike Arlington’s, “Dickie” on my way to Georgetown and invited him to join me. It seemed only appropriate: (Dickie <=> Duckie) but he was expected at home, so in the end it was just me, the Duckie, and a beautiful spring afternoon!

44.5 miles Full Ridedcv, Mrs. dcv, and junior dcv joined me for a perfect spring ride through some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city with many gorgeous big houses and yards brimming with spring flowers! This ride had its full measure of hills. Starting and ending in Georgetown, we began by carrying our bikes up the Exorcist Stairs, zigzagging through Georgetown, and up Wisconsin. At the end of Whitehaven St we discovered a tiny pathway up and through the woods to the back of the Naval Observatory which we needed for Bunny’s tail. Security forces at the Vice Presidential Mansion eyed the 4 rag-tag cyclists carrying their bikes as we skirted the 14 ft high iron fence! Soon we were up by American University and cutting through the center of Ward Circle. At the back of Bunny’s head, the route called for a traverse on tiny roads through the Japanese Embassy. The locked entrance gate was guarded, and I had to negotiate with the uniformed security officer. He was adamant, “Definitely not!” but I asked him to call his supervisor, so he called his boss on a hand-held radio and handed the receiver to me. “Hello, Sir, my name is Dave Pomeroy and I’m here with my friends on bikes with GPSs and we’re making a STRAVA art ride of a giant bunny for Easter and the route calls for us to cross through your embassy grounds…it sounded preposterous (even to me), but miraculously, after a brief pause, he said it would be okay just to pass through! I waved over the rest of our party, who had been waiting a respectful distance on the other side of Nebraska Ave, but when it was time to actually open the closed gate, the supervisor recanted. In the end we had to circumnavigate the embassy and resume our route on the other side! Bunny’s ears took us through upper NW roads, streets and alleys, so we got to see the fronts and backs of many fine houses. Hill climbing began in earnest with Bunny’s paws, taking us repeatedly up and down the Palisades by Battery Kemble park. Bunny’s hind foot required getting over to Canal Rd or Capital Crescent Tr, but going via Fletcher’s Boathouse was wrong for the drawing. Well, our last and greatest adventure came at the “foot” of Hutchins Pl adjacent to the Georgetown Reservoir. We discovered an obscure way through the woods, carrying our bikes down the steep hillside to a level passageway, covered with grass and gravel, parallel to, but still on the hillside above, Canal Road with no way down! We followed the passage in the direction of Georgetown, and lo and behold, we again reached civilization, and a challenging, but passable, way down to Canal Street. A sprint down narrow Canal Rd, followed by Georgetown traffic congestion brought us back to where we had started. Bunny was done, but it wasn’t just a ride—it was an adventure!

ParticipantI warn loudly whenever I see runners, walkers, joggers who are going the same direction ahead of me who:
1. look at their watches
2. reach for their phones or music players
3. are approaching trail junctions or bridges
4. slow unexpectlyI don’t take chances! Voice, bell, whistle–whatever it takes to get their attention. Am I disturbing their Zen? Probably, but I’d rather have someone angry with me than see someone get hurt for lack of attention (and that includes me!)

I presume you’re asking about my GPS art drawing technique. Generally I follow roads, streets, stairs, and alleys. Of course I can go wherever I please in open areas like parks, fields, (and graveyards!) See the lady’s face on “Whoops, I Stepped on Fluffy’s Tail AGAIN!” Sometimes I even cut across corner lawns to round out edges in my GPS art drawings. See the turd in “GPS ride Art is not BullS**t.” When there is absolutely no street alternative and it is demanded by the drawing, I will do a “strava pause” as described by cyclingfool on this forum. See, for example the warp engine on my “Beam Me Up Scotty” drawing of the Starship Enterprise.
As for the example you’ve shown, I don’t recognize this Strava ride! I don’t think you have one of mine. Maybe it’s a route that someone rode with a broken GPS? I thought at first you might have been looking at my GODZILLA’s back foot, but look at the attached image from my GPS art GODZILLA ride and see for yourself…no diagonals!

56 miles Full RideI made my plan for this drawing back in March, but I was waiting for better weather and a big enough chunk of time that I could finish the drawing in one ride. This is a BIG BIRD (dinosaur) and it took a big drawing! Its pointed beak is in East Falls Church and its crest is at Dupont Circle. I had to do a GPS pause to connect the crest to the head of my prehistoric flying friend. Its leathery wings stretch from Sleepy Hollow and Seven Corners in Virginia to the other side of Union Station and the Capitol in DC. Its hind feet with sharp talons dangle in Alexandria and a seven mile stretch of King/Rte 7/Leesburg Pike make up the left side

57.1 miles Full RideI had the idea for this drawing back in February when I did my running elephant. The plan was to do both an elephant and a donkey (Well, this is Washington, DC), but my plans always looked more like a horse than a donkey! So I stuck with the idea of a horse. This is a big drawing and it took over 5 hours of riding time. I pedaled through posh neighborhoods in Great Falls and McLean, busy commercial areas including Tysons Center, the heart of Vienna, Fairfax center, and Bailey’s Crossroads, on numerous bike trails including W&OD in separate sections and Custis, I had to find my way through woods on leaf covered trails—but fortunately this ride did not require any stream fordings! I lost a full hour thanks to a flat tire I got, far from home (on the horse’s chin) Fortunately I had a spare tube, because the cement had dried up or evaporated in both first AND backup patching kits! Unfortunately, the tire puncture was a rip in the sidewall! Even though I placed a rubber patch over the rip when I pumped to medium pressure, there was a pea-sized balloon. I knew I was screwed! I was saved when, a scant mile later, I looked up and saw a Local Bike shop (circle at Lee and Rte 50). Before long, I had a brand new Gatorskin and tube and sailed through the rest of my ride! Talk about lucky!

77.8 miles Full RideThis drawing is more city-writing. The acronym stands for Bike Arlington Freezing Saddles, which is a self-styled winter cycling competition comprised of hearty cold weather riders who belong to the BikeArlington cycling club. With ten teams of ten riders each, one goal is to see how many miles each team can ride from the first day of the year (January 1) through the last full day of winter (Vernal Equinox, May 19, 2014) I made this ride/drawing in honor of the winning team, the identity of which was unknown to me on the date this was done. (We now know it was Sloppy Seconds Team and this ride-art was featured on the blue-ribbon first place button that I gave to each winning team member) Editors note: I reinforced and thickened the route line to make the image show up better on the first prize button, but the ride was exactly as shown. This ride was on only city paved streets—no stream crossings or bushwhacking, but there were more than a few pot-holes to watch out for! This drawing was completed on the same ride as my drawing of GODZILLA.

They are all good. Should we make our own set of “rules”. I can think of a few locally specific rules.
What would you add?Hello, my name is David, and I’m a recovering scofflaw-aholic.
Oh Mikey…I try to be good….I honestly TRY, but I’m bad.
1. I DO call my passes, ring my bell, and when I suspect an upcoming Crazy Ivan, I use my police whistle.. and then I only pass when I think it’s safe (which I hope is what you also think is safe–but it’s hard to know)
2. I acknowledge that tourists are annoying, unaware, and unsafe, generally, and out of kindness and respect I don’t use a blast from my police whistle unless I really need to for their safety.
3. Leapfrogging? I came into this world with a ‘Cat 6’ birthmark on my hind-side. Leapfrogging is acceptable here there and everywhere, and I DO enjoy the drop!.
4. I try not to Shoal, but then when the light changes, I know I’m just going to have to leapfrog!
5. No problems here….”I always say Hello, Rider; Good morning; How are you today?; Nice Weather. . .” (Just look at my forum name and, well…that’s me)
6. I’m getting better at stopping at red lights (even sometimes when there’re no cars, because I understand the value of setting a good example) and i’m working on slowing down for stop signs (Let’s just say I’m from Idaho)God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference.

77.8 miles Full RideThe scale of this drawing is what makes it unique. At 10 miles across, it is the largest drawing and took the longest time to ride of any drawings I’ve made so far. This huge work crosses the Potomac River twice (Chain & Wilson Bridges) and the Anacostia River via East Capitol St Bridge. It took me 9 hours from start to finish, with actual riding time of 5 3/4 hours. Karen B. rode with me from Godzilla’s nose to the top of his head. This drawing incorporates roads, streets, major highways, bike trails, and one short off-road segment through woods on Godzilla’s arm, near S. Kensington St.

9.5 miles Full RideI did this drawing on the ride home from work. I was riding the Black Battleship (my heaviest bike, a cyclocross, equipped with fenders, rack, trunk and studded tires) because the forecast called for rain, thunderstorms, and rapid temperature drop. This was yet another hilly drawing, but it was short; only about a tenth as far as I usually ride to do a drawing. The bull’s “gift” to this neighborhood was actually an afterthought, penciled in on my somewhat crumpled hard copy map. It worked because I could draw it on the same street that was under the bull’s hind legs. I had to cut across 4 lawns to create the rounded top, chuckling to myself the whole time and hoping no residents would come out and yell at me!

42.3 miles Full RideI did this as one part of a much longer ride, and stiff NW wind made things a little harder for the whole ride. These were some nice hills in the Sleepy Hollow/ Columbia Pike area. When I started this drawing, I was thinking about doing a frog inspired by the streets that make the top of the head and the circle, well-placed to be a right eye, but it didn’t really work. When I added the tail, it was definitely a monkey, I just had to find the legs! There was some off-road scrambling, including a steep wooded ravine with a serious stream crossing at the bottom, just South of Larchmont Park in the right foreleg.

32.7 miles Full RideIn this neighborhood, I conceived of the lady and the cat separately, (as well as a fox and a Portuguese man of war jellyfish –as of now not yet ridden) but when I saw the proximity of the cat and the lady, the joke became obvious. I drew the right side of the lady, then drew the cat and ended by finishing the lady. I had to navigate through grassy areas, parking lots, and sidewalks to draw the lady’s face and neck. Her cat is running away from home tonight!
