Good info, but you make me think we need to change the name to “Kinda Cold Saddles”
GREAT POINT. Please start appropriate thread for discussion.

ParticipantThis is all good info, and just for fun, here’s a blog I wrote last winter where I crunched weather NOAA data for the last three winters to show how many rideable days there are in the colder months, even if you skip snow and sub zero temps.
Data from the post:
“Snow*- 16 is the number of days (out of 121) that there was snow on the ground last winter.**
- 14 is the number of days (out of 121) it was actually snowing.
Freezing Temps***
- 93% of winter days had a high above freezing
- 66% of winter days had a low above freezing
So you could sit out freezing temps and snow, and still be able to ride about 2/3 of winter comfortably.”

ParticipantThanks for the discussion on this–you all brought up some great points. I’m going to see what we can come up with to distill this into a friendly, share-able message. I’ll let you know what comes of it!

ParticipantYou: Foot-slogging down the hill in Rosslyn, wearing shades, looking serious. Also, definitely Steve O.
Me: Lots of waving, verbally saying “HI STEVE” enthusiastically.
You: Still definitely Steve O, but unresponsive. So yeah, just wanted to make sure you knew I said “Hi”, Steve O!

isn’t the law in Maryland that cyclists DO have to use the bike lane if it’s there?
Yeah, seems like there is. I feel like the information about why someone might not be in a bike lane might be useful to curious drivers. BA had someone tweet at us asking about the position of a person biking that they saw while driving in a friendly way.
Maybe my drawing can have asterisks for local laws. And it does seem like folks are looking to change the MD law.

We could also use more basic education as to what is, and what isn’t a bike lane.
This is definitely important, too. Seems a slightly different problem, but also related to education and awareness.

Classic.
Definitely classic, but a little too tongue in cheek maybe? But the same idea, get someone to realize that there are legit reasons to depart the bike lane, including what scoot says, too.

ParticipantKlizzotte, you’re hitting on a lot of the points I’ve thought about, too, from the signs being confusing to most successful interventions.
And DMV would be great, but I think for most of us Driver’s Ed was so many years ago, and the roads have changed. Additional testing is another thing all together… But I dig the idea of a PSA in the metro paper and similar places.

ParticipantPretty much.

ParticipantIn the spirit of inclusivity for Ents (and others), volunteers with interest/ability in only low fives and/or no interest in fives of any kind are certainly welcome.
The whole moderately pleasant thing, however, stands.Erin Potter
ParticipantIf you are not great at high fives, the guy looming behind me can give you some tips. And then you will be all set! For life, and for volunteering.

You may want to forward a copy to the Maryland Transit Administration. They have some strange ideas about proper bike rack installation, at least at the Laurel MD MARC station.

Someone installed these U racks side by side. Thus, the set of U racks can only accommodate about half of the bikes than it could with proper installation.
I filled out their online complaint form to notify them of the improper installation, but they may not pay attention to a single isolated complaint.
Oooph. That’s a new variation on the old classic of installing them right next to a wall.

ParticipantI will be there! Thanks to the organizers of rooms, teams, name tags and all other mischief.
