ParticipantJust got word from our friends at Arlington Parks and Recreation that there will be a bit more work on the Four Mile Run Trail.
Details from my inbox:
“There will be a short term trail closure on the Four Mile Run trial on Friday of this week (9/22) and Monday (9/25). This is for installation of some final project elements, and should be the last closure related to the project. The detour in Alexandria is still available for trail users. We apologize for the inconvenience.”Be alert this Friday and Monday–detour is still up that takes you on the Alexandria side.

ParticipantAnother trail disruption report from my inbox:
“Four Mile Run Trail to be Impacted by I-395 Rehabilitation Project
Rehabilitation work on the Shirley Highway (I-395) bridge over Four Mile Run is planned to begin this week. The bridge work will require a temporary narrowing of the Four Mile Run pedestrian and bicycle trail where it passes beneath the Shirley Highway bridge.
Crews contracted to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin to set-up work platforms above the trail sometime in the week of September 4th. The work will require a narrowing of the trail for a three to four-month period. Full closure of the trail will be limited to a few selected times and only during night-time hours. Directional detour signs will be provided for trail users in those periods when the trail is closed.”Erin Potter
ParticipantThe ever-awesome WashCycle has shared a rundown of the Custis Improvements:

ParticipantWe haven’t seen and modification of traffic plans yet– so I can’t say for sure. If they were to close something, they would provide a marked detour, similar to what went on with Four Mile Run this past year.

ParticipantY’ALL.
It’s official!
From my inbox:
“The Four Mile Run trail from Mt. Vernon Avenue to S. Eads St. has re-opened ahead of schedule, because the majority of the construction work for the restoration project is complete. There will be some short term closures (1-2 days) as the final tasks for the project are completed in August. DES will share the dates of the short term closures in advance to the BikeArlington community. Please be aware of the potential for the trail to be closed, and follow the detour as required. We appreciate your patience as we finish the final work on the Four Mile Run Restoration project.”
So stay tuned for notes of those short term closures, but otherwise, it’s smooth sailing!

All was well this morning. Newly poured concrete section was wide open.
All clear by 6 PM yesterday — thanks to dagesh and the PAL Ambassadors for reporting and to DES staff for working to set things straight with Washington Gas and VDOT!

I can’t imagine they would keep 2 lanes of Lynn blocked off during the afternoon rush hour. If they poured concrete, no doubt it will be a CF, but likely different from the pictures and video. It may be a good day to complete the Arlington Loop for the afternoon commute.
I’m headed a different direction this evening, but share what you see if you do roll by! I think you’re right in thinking it will change– county staff was planning to be on-hand when the workers took off for the night, to supervise any changes to the travel flow.

Since you were there, did you tell them to put down a piece of plywood or something to make a ramp? Or will every cyclist need to either dismount to go up the curb or do a bunny hop?
The curbs were also my concern, for folks on wheels of all types. These guys also had no plywood for ramps. And aren’t you prepping for cyclocross?

Might this be finished by Saturday morning?
According to the intel I received, it should be gone by this evening. So I’m hopeful it’s a one afternoon problem.

“Cross here.” Mid block. Brilliant.

So it’s more like “Detour here” but I guess that sign is not in the standard sign kit? You travel through a cone-delineated lane.

Participant🚨 Heads up for tonight’s commute/evening adventure: Cone detours are in place at Lynn and Lee in Rosslyn, near the entrance to the Mt. Vernon Trail as the curb ramp at the intersection is repoured. Watch for curbs and look out for each other!

ParticipantIn keeping with tradition, weather has made itself known for tonight’s parade. BUT. Despite the rain–the parade will go on!
See y’all out there for a slow roll through the mists of Clarendon!

ParticipantWhat about bells? It will be like cats–so folks always know when a Freezing Saddle participant is coming.
Idea suggested after being passed by a gentlemen this morning, who MUST have had bells on…or the noisiest zipper pulls ever.
Cursory internet research suggests that the OTHER bikers are into bells as symbols of friendship and to ward off demons.November 18, 2016 at 6:08 pm in reply to: Hey! Why isn’t that person on a bike in the bike lane? #1060565Erin Potter
