I was so excited for the almost-but-not-quite pink t-shirt this year

I saw on Strava a friend who ran across the 14th St bridge today at 3pm, accessing it from Ohio Dr. Maybe they’re starting to ease restrictions? Or as someone said earlier, it really might be hit or miss depending on what officer is there.

Yesterday 2 of my friends tried to cross. One was stopped by DC police, and told to go back to VA. The other was waved onto Hains Point after taking the staircase down from the 14th st bridge by a different cop (we only know it’s different since they report one cop was male, the other female).

So who knows what is happening…

Don’t even get me started on the tight clusters of people on the trail. I’ve been calling my passes loud & early, holding my breath and speeding past…. Then cleaning myself & my clothes as soon as I get home. The idea that this might not be enough just felt over the top.

Right now is a good time to learn some new on-street bike routes to avoid those groups of people. Steve O and I did a modified version of the Contes Alexandria ride this morning. Only a little bit on the MVT (and the very southern end too which is rarely crowded), otherwise, all street riding on very safe neighborhood roads. I think that’ll be my long-ish ride route for awhile since it’s easy to do between a 20-50 miles using variations of it people have posted on their facebook page.

I drove past the MVT north of the airport today, and there is NO WAY I’d want to ride on that right now. I went Friday along the trail and to Hains Point which was lovely, but it looks like a downright mess right now.

Honestly, nothing will be perfect. You’ll touch the bike, they’ll touch the bike. Even if you adjust it yourself, they’ve adjusted it prior and will again after, even if you buy it.

So if you’re worried about it, bring some hand sanitizer, and clean your hands BEFORE and after touching the bike, and wear gloves while riding. Ask them to use your hand sanitizer before they touch the bike if they help with seat adjustment, and ask them to wipe the bike down with a cleaner before and after you test ride it, or do it yourself. Don’t sneeze, cough, or spit on the bike. Wear a balaclava if you’re worried about that happening. Way more stylish than a surgical mask ;)

At this stage, if you’re not completely bunkering down at home (which is almost impossible for many of us–some of us need to buy groceries, order food, work jobs that still require us to leave the house, etc), you just need to take as many steps as possible to keep yourself and others around you safe.

I’ve had several different things there now and theyve all been great. They make these thick billowy noodles that are sooooo pleasant to bite into and theres a bunch of interesting sounding things on the menu.

They had a lovely wapo article written about them. They’re good.

Is it a kryptonite by chance? If so, keep playing around with it. I have seen 3-4 do this, and eventually, they all open. I stopped using kryptonite’s after seeing it occur so many times, and had it occur to me. It took me 20 minutes of playing with the lock, fidgeting the key around to get it to open. Just don’t play so hard the key snaps in the lock…

Except it doesn’t get rid of having to cross Shirlington road to get to/from the trail from what I read, so Reji will still have to look out for cement trucks…

    Per the article:
The Four Mile Run plan also considered an underpass running beneath the bridge, negating the need for cyclists and other trail users to cross busy Shirlington Road, though that was not discussed at the Transportation Commission meeting. Arlington County is currently working on a $15.5 million renovation project for Jennie Dean Park, adjacent to the future bridge.

perfect! That generally lines up with what I was hoping for. Text me when you’re leaving coffee and I can meet you on the trail. If I magically wake up early I’ll head over to st elmos.

What time do you guys plan to get to and then leave coffee? I can plan my departure based on that so we can ride to Mike’s together… (even if it requires getting out of bed a little early…)

As a cyclist who is also a motorist, I have to disagree. This summer, for instance, driving along Shore Drive in Virginia Beach (where a bike lane sits right next to 55-mph traffic), I remember having my attention drawn to a cyclist by his blinky who turned out to be almost a mile away. Registered to me subconsciously before I was fully aware of it that there must be a cyclist ahead.

I’m with huskerdont on this one. Sometimes I’ll drive up behind 2 bikes. If they’re solid lights, they can be mistaken at a distance for poorly shaped rear car tail lights. Blinky lights are always either peds or bikes so I recognize those quick.

At the end of the day though when I’m driving, the first thing I consistently see are reflective things. The ones on the back of ortlieb panniers are AMAZING. I saw and noticed those wayyy in advance of any other red light on a bike I was driving behind earlier this week. Giant reflective patch = clearly not a car so I immediately knew I needed to up my caution level. I’ve also gotten comments from cars that they loved them when they saw mine while driving behind me at night.

Delicious spicy Ramen in Falls Church. I think this place changes its menu in small ways every 6 months and yet somehow always serves the same thing. Quite delicious. 2b5933c986be144fbf1e2ad3fa3dd509.jpg4790e12277846610bd377ce36c1590c0.jpg
