ParticipantCan someone remind me where the temperatures used on the scoreboard draw from? I noticed it logged 8.10 degrees F for my ride that began in Vienna, VA on Friday, February 20 at 7:49 a.m. I took an Instagram photo of the thermostat at home, which didn’t sync with the ride, and it was 1 degree F. I can see a variation of two or three degrees, but seven degrees? And I think all who rode that morning would agree it was no balmy eight degrees in central Fairfax county.
I notice it is the same for some others out that morning, although many notched temperatures well below that. Is there any reason why?

ParticipantThe W&OD– as usual, the 10 feet in front of the Vienna Community Center are clear. The rest is a trampled down mess; icy ruts of death by tomorrow.
Rode around the streets of Vienna– mostly bare pavement in the sunny spots but still slick snow in the shade, especially the less traveled streets. Very wet with many puddles; with the expected re freeze I would recommend studded tires tomorrow.

ParticipantTeam Ride! This Monday, February 16 at 10 a.m. at the Vienna Caboose. We will ride 30 miles or until we mutually agree we have fulfilled our recommended daily allowance of Rule 9, whichever comes first. Social pace. Refreshments afterwards. I will bring toe warmers and hand warmers.
Other teams will not be turned away!

ParticipantGreat choice on the Cannondale Quick! We have two of them in our house. They continuously change the model names from year to year, so I’ll focus on the features over the specific name.
My husband has a 2010 Quick CX Ultra with front shock. It’s a very nice bike. The shock is probably overkill for the Mount Vernon and W&OD. But it is nice if you wander onto unpaved paths from time to time. I don’t have a hybrid myself so I rode this bike on the GAP trail and C&O and it was great.
My son has a 2010 Quick CX Rigid, with no front shock (the low end Quick). Also a nice bike. It has proven very sturdy; he is a young teen and rides like one. You could also take that on unpaved trails if you ride like a teenager. But it is perfectly acceptable for the W&OD or Mount Vernon.
Hope this helps.

ParticipantLeigh Ann! My fellow LCI, no?
One thing I forgot to mention: If we aren’t already “following” one another on Strava, please either post your Strava name here or send me a private message with the info so I can invite you to our team on Strava. That is needed for keeping our team score.
I am “Elizabeth MacGregor” on Strava.
Now I really have to get on to my Serious Business for the day.
Thanks all.

ParticipantDue to life-happens grownup-stuff, I have not commuted by bike in more than three weeks, and only sporadically for the last two months or more. It had not been my intention to ride in this morning, but the news from Metro was not good, so I changed into riding gear and got my bike up from the basement. I was commuting on the super late shift, but was glad to be out there and see a few trail Bobs. It was a disruption in my plans, but I can’t say it was a bad one.
Oh, and I saw the same food truck stuck on I-66 at East Falls Church and then again at Spout Run. He and I were going the same pace. But I left him behind from there.

ParticipantExcellent advice, everyone, now I just need to figure out what bike shop carries which brand and check them out in person. Or just go to Friday Coffee Club.
I admit I missed the recent discussion on the “Covet” thread, including the in depth analysis of backpack vs. panniers. Although I McGyver’d the zipper this a.m., I was actually thinking that when that stops working I’ll just switch to my Chrome messenger bag until I get around to buying the panniers. Sometimes I carry a ton of stuff in or out but other than that, I don’t have a strong preference between the two for commuting. It appears most people do.

ParticipantHello Ben and welcome aboard!
I don’t know if you are a Facebook subscriber, but if so, you could join the “DC Used Bicycle Marketplace” group. It is pretty active and you see a steady stream of complete bikes of all types advertised. It seems to be the go-to place for folks who’ve recently upgraded and are selling their previous model.
There is also Craigslist, of course.
Good luck!

ParticipantI’ll probably be listing the frame on eBay this weekend so if you are interested, speak up now. Other stuff seen here still available.

Do you think that would work with disc brakes? It looks like not enough clearance on that wheel– I can’t tell if it’s adjustable and could be moved forward to give more space?
That would depend — we have three bikes with disk brakes here — just tested and it definitely would not fit my husband’s or son’s Quick. It looks like it might fit my mountain bike. It can move forward a little. However, there is another issue, which is that it fits best on a bike with a round chain stay. If they chain stay is unusually large or if it has some ELITE aero shape to it it’s not going to fit.
