Dread showed up espousing political diatribes
I certainly hope this political opinionating was limited to bike advocacy, bike infrastructure, bike componentry, fixie vs. geared, e-bikes on trails, calling your passes, the intersection of doom, etc. etc. Anything else would be very tedious indeed.

ParticipantGood luck, Liz! If you flip back a page on hozn’s link, you will see my event report. Hopefully that will help you avoid some of the pitfalls that I dove headlong into. Jason B is right; pace yourself and don’t let the excitement carry you away to an overly fast pace at the start.
I also found the route in 2013 a bit challenging — haven’t checked out the new route, but hopefully it is better. Outfit your bike with as many water bottles as possible because it was hard to find water between rest stops. I will also hope the weather behaves for you.

Oh my. Just a few blocks away and I forgot my lunch at home. Perfect timing.
Update: oh sweet lord, this is delicious.

Actually, Lazy Sundae serves breakfast. They open at 6 am, and sit right at the WOD and Bikenetic. Monday Pancake Club.

How many churches have “Pancake Breakfasts”?
Nice try, but I think it’s pancake suppers.

I’m out of town that Thur-Sun so I will have to meet up with someone from Lucky Prisms beforehand to give them some money toward buying winners a beer. Enjoy though. It was fun event last year and nice to meet so many folks
Happy to help, but sorry you won’t be there!

That works, so long as I’m at metro center by 8:20-ish so I have time to shower and change. Just let me know when/where you want to meet! If the W&OD is clear enough (25mm slicks) I’ll bike the whole way, otherwise I was going to drive to WFC (since I need my car after work anyway) and start from there.
Thanks!
I don’t know what state the W&OD is in between Gallows and WFC — so should we meet at Grove and W&OD at 7:20? Or if you are comfortable testing the trail we can meet at Sandburg about 7-ish. I will also be on slicks.

ParticipantI can do earlier than 8:30. I can’t leave much before 6:30 though.

On the fence if I’m going solo…thinking about driving to WFC and taking consularrider’s route to Banneker (sp?) Park.
What time do you go? Where do you meet? I come from Vienna to Farragut West. I will probably detour to streets at least until Gallows, maybe as far as Route 7.

ParticipantHere are some pictures of the W&OD between Gallows and Park. Slushy now, but if there is a refreeze, IROD tomorrow.

Ever had chicken and waffles? Sounds weird until you try it, then it’s like how in the future can I possibly eat a waffle WITHOUT fried chicken?
Okay, I’m going to take your word for it.

I wouldn’t ride 7 eastbound with little ones and maybe solo if I got the jump at the light before the ramp to 666
The trick is to be patient and time the light and then you are going through that section pretty much by yourself.

ParticipantI have heard of donut and fried chicken places but this idea is revolting to me — all one deep fryer, or separate for the sweet and savory?
Nonetheless, when the weather finally turns warm again, my son will probably resume his high school bike commute and this is the spot I use for the turnaround point.
@americancyclo, weren’t you the one who taught me just to ride down Route 7?Liz

The Wundermap shows several weather stations in the Vienna area. Check out station KVAVIENN15 in Vienna Woods. With this, I don’t know why if would default to National Airport. It looks like most of us have a coldest ride from last Friday morning (2/20) with several at the 6.08°F mark from multiple locations. I know that my closest weather stations (Westover KVAARLIN28) was reading about 2°F that morning.
Yep, KVAVIENNA15 is about five blocks from my house, and appears to be reporting 2.8 degrees F for 7:49 a.m. last Friday.
But when you search under “Vienna, VA” in Wunderground — which is what Hozn says the application does — it defaults to KDCA.

ParticipantI just looked at Wunderground and for Vienna, apparently they don’t have any local weather stations so they use data from National Airport. Ha!

ParticipantThank you — I guess there are anolomolies here and there, but overall, the results are within reason.
Also, I think the interface is remarkable and I certainly have enjoyed watching the progress in miles below freezing, rides before/after sunset, etc. over the course of the competition. Kudos and thanks.
