Awesome! See, THAT’s why I want all cyclists and joggers to wear shirts. Because I am concerned about your health. That is the only reason.

Uh, what were we talking about?

This summer I have the joy to send my kids to summer school by car. I get the joy of crossing the W&OD at both Shreve Road and West Street. The sight lines at both intersections are pretty bad. The actual traffic pattern behaves completely different from the signage. From my perspective as both a driver and cyclist, I am afraid, very afraid.

Yes, those are bad intersections. At Shreve in particular, the cars can come along pretty fast. As a cyclist, I might think the coast is clear and proceed, and then someone comes flying over that hill. And if I’ve come to a complete, clipped out stop, it takes some time to get going. The sight lines are too short to really know if it is safe.

Credit card bike tourists are pansies.

Why? Don’t get me wrong, I like camping, but just wondering.

Canvas . . . ugh, I can still smell those old tents from the scout days.

I see him in the mornings AND the evenings sometimes! He is very friendly.

After my brief chat with Dirt I nearly got skeeshed on Fairfax by someone heading to one of the rides (pickup with a shiny c’dale in back)- note to folks driving to a group ride- it’s bad form and reeeealy bad karma to run over other riders on the way there.

When I first began bike commuting way back when, I had a car change lanes right into me (14th Street NW in Columbia Heights). That was my first scare and my first successful implementation of swift evasive maneuvers. As he drove off, still completely oblivious, I noticed it was a Subaru wagon with a bike rack on the back.

I just swept around Talahi and the W&OD. If that isn’t the spot let me know.

YAY! I’ll keep an eye on it and get out there with a broom as needed, too.

As a runner, I am very thankful for the gravel. It’s much better surface for my knees and gets me away from Lance Armstrong. The W&OD team are excellent in keeping the trail clean and debris free.

I was thinking that gravel was too big to run in — pea gravel would make a nice running surface, I would think. But you are saying you like to run in that big gravel? I am just asking out of curiosity. Also, when I used to run, I once fell while running in extremely deep, big gravel (at much higher altitude than what I was used to. I was actually hoping my running companion wouldn’t notice me and I could just die there).

I’m almost certain I know where you enter the W&OD.

Wow, thank you! No problem if you don’t, though — I think I’ll remember this weekend.

And vvill, I need another bike like I need a hole in my head. Although this goes to show, there truly is a bike for every situation.

Dirt sighting (and chat) at the W&OD/Custis intersection followed by an Eminva sighting just before the Westover playground/I-66 underpass…unfortunately, the second sighting didn’t register until it was too late unless I turned and gave chase, or I would have hollered.
What an awesome number of bike commuters were out today. Had a lovely Cat6 in the morning and again in the evening with some very polite riders. Rarely (if ever) had that much fun even when commuting by motorcycle.
    I love my commute!

Oh, I didn’t see you! I was trying to be alert but there were so many cyclists out I couldn’t spot everyone. I was trying to get through there before the 5K on the trail began.

I saw someone I didn’t recognize in a Bike Arlington jersey coming east on the W&OD in Falls Church at about 6:45 pm.

There were a lot of bike commuters yesterday and I think there were a lot of cyclists heading for the Fresh Bikes ride in the evening. A very nice day for riding.

I know Granny, I might be Granny, and I can assure you that she certainly was not impressed.

But seriously, a polka dot jersey?! While speeding along the notoriously mountain-less MVT? He wins the irony award, that’s for sure.

I am not sure what is more amazing — fording the river or that you rode on New Hampshire Avenue – !!

Congrats on the epic journey and thanks for reporting back. Doesn’t look from the map like there is an easier way to do that. MNCPPC, can you fix that?

I appreciated the advance warning, rcannon, which gave me just enough time to wrap up my work and get through the course with 10 minutes to spare (according to the announcements I heard the course marshal make to the volunteers). Sorry I didn’t see any dogs, but I figured the best scenario would be to get through there before them. The only problem I had in that stretch was unrelated to the race; I got sandwiched in the middle of one of those impromptu pacelines that I wanted no part of. I just slowed down and eventually they all sped away from me.

Thanks for any other announcements of events; I can plan around them.
