It’s also a full moon on Monday. Odds of going into labor during Frankenstorm? Ugh.

At the grocery store today, my normally-sane husband came loaded with water. I got him to pare it back to 5 gallons.

Maybe your two observations are not unrelated in his mind. Watch out if he gets home and starts trying to find a sheltered space somewhere so he can build a fire to boil water in the middle of the storm if need be . . .

I think you were serving decaf because (a) I almost forgot my helmet (thanks Zanna!) and (b), the photo is totally out of focus. Sorry about that.

From there, I went to Pennsylvania Avenue to join the anti-U turn action:

Orange, pink and hi-viz yellow — a color combo that only the Brady Bunch would love.

And I had a surprise meeting as soon as I got to the office! Before I had time to change out of my bikey clothes. Teach me to run late . . .

I believe my first post to this forum was an inquiry about the etiquette around drafting strangers on commuter arteries (in my case, the W&OD). I think the consensus was that it is polite to ask before settling in on someone’s wheel.

I had a concern then, which continues to this day, that if it is dark out, I would really appreciate a quick word before you shadow me for four or five miles. I like to know who is around me at all times and it is hard to see in the glare of lights. (I was reassured when I raised the issue that I probably have little to fear from my fellow commuters, and I agree, but we all have our indiosyncracies).

I had so much fun lighting up my bike I am lighting up my son’s bike and putting them both in the front yard for Halloween. I’ll post photos. It’s fun and not scary.

I didn’t have a camera on me, but on Adahi in Vienna (one block south of the W&OD their is a house overrun by skeletons (~30 of them). Pretty cool.

Now I know where I’m trick or treating this year!

I looked at the registration, and if you register for the 200 MILES distance before November 6th, it is actually cheaper than registering for the 200 KILOMETER distance as a late bird (after May 6, 2013). So, Certifried, vvill and any other lurkers on the fence, I say register now for the 200M and you can always back off to the 200K when the time gets closer if need be.

    Yours in insanity,

Hmm . . . I always look for something new to do each year. Could I do this? What are the time limits? I have done a W&OD century averaging about 16 mph by myself. I think I could do another 20 miles at that pace. I’ve done virtually no group riding, but I guess if I could learn to do that, I could go faster? (Forgive my ignorance here — I’m a one trick pony).

I assume the date is determined due to the amount of light available? Because you sure aren’t getting the best weather then.

If I can’t ride it, I would like to volunteer because it is such an interesting event.

It won’t be while biking but I’ll try and grab some pics of the insanity that happens on East Capitol Street every year. Commuters like myself and JDAntos who go that way every day probably know already, but you’d do well to avoid East Capitol Street on Halloween. Take Mass Ave or Independence or something to avoid it. Half the surrounding area (including Maryland) brings their kids there to trick-or-treat.

I saw this this morning! I had to DRIVE to work (first time in five years) and needed to drop my husband off at the Library of Congress and then get over to Farragut North. I passed by East Capitol and saw some crazy stuff. I was going to post to this thread, but forgot until I saw DaveK’s message. I didn’t get a photo because I was behind the windshield and moving at the time.

Maybe don’t go on Halloween itself, but probably worth a ride by a night or two before if you are in the area.

Why was the bike lane put on the left rather than the right?

There are only a few (maybe just one) garage entrances on the left side of the street that could not be relocated but a ton of them on the right side.

I will take the “cautiously optimistic” side of DismalScientist’s bet. The way I look at it is that bike infrastructure is still in its infancy and we are the guinea pigs. If it’s not perfect, maybe they will learn something and improve the design in the future.

P.S. I didn’t know they would be tearing up the whole street for our new bike lanes!

I also would have liked to have seen it but had a conflict last night. I understand it will be available on DVD or download in a few months.

As the mother of a bass player, this is intriguing . . . but I am astonished she doesn’t have that thing in a case (if you thought bicycles were expensive . . .)

What fun! So great to see and cheer on Mark, Tim, dcv and vvill. Sorry I didn’t see you afterwards, dcv. Those guys did great, and it didn’t look easy. Also nice to see acc, Arlingtonrider, Dirt, DaveK and Riley.

Here are some pictures. I missed snapping one of Mark. Guess he was too fast for me.

I wish I had video of the tandem race — that was awesome!

Take a look here to see who’s registered. Check out the Rookie Race, scheduled for 4:15 p.m. tomorrow, for some familiar names . . . .

MJ — So glad to hear you are feeling well. See this thread for some specific advice on what to do next:

Please report the crash to WABA for their statistics.

Sorry this happened, but glad you are well enough to report to us. Take care.

Sorry to hear about your crash and hope you are okay, txgoonie! If I’m reading the code on my insurance card correctly, I do have that coverage, but have no idea of the limits. Probably worth a call to the agent.

I thought I read in the news report that the driver in that crash was 58 years old? That could have been wrong . . . or maybe someone thinks that is still young.

My thoughts continue to go out to this couple — very sad.
