To the two guys jubilantly celebrating in full Nats regalia, stumbling around the center of the trail at Brandymore, one of whom . . . um . . . heeded the call of nature right then and there:

    Thanks for not driving.

I thought it was automatic that your license would be suspended if you failed a breathalizer test, even before any adjudication — ?

So that may have happened already. Not sure how long it lasts, though.

We now have a local challenge for Fairfax County and Falls Church up and running, sponsored by FABB. I see Bike Arlington on the leaderboard as well as WABA, although the latter seems to be confined to DC residents. Whither Marylanders?

By the way, your participation in the local challenge seems to be automatic based on your zip code. Leaderboard seems to be based on points per 1000 residents.

Also, the waiting list for the WABA classes run into the hundreds. She is definitely not the only one.

I don’t know New Hampshire, but if one of those instructors is within hailing distance, they might come to her.

I had asked her about local challenges, because the board was showing that there weren’t any in our area, and I knew there were several bike advocacy organizations. Sorry if I spilled the beans prematurely!

Makes perfect sense. You did not spill the beans! I’ll set up the FABB end just as soon as they correct the technical issues.

Look at the League of American Bicyclists’ website. Under Education, she will be able to search for League Cycling Instructors in her area. There is contact info on website so she can contact one of them for a one-on-one lesson. She should be riding in less than three hours.

Hi – I think I’m the one Allison expects to set up the FABB effort and I have to confess I haven’t watched the webcast for administrators yet (had an appointment when it was originally scheduled), plus there have been some technical issues that are yet to be resolved. Was this an email in response to something you sent, or did this go out generally to participants? I ask because I will probably get questions from my FABB friends if this is going out generally. For my own part, I wasn’t going to announce anything until the technical issues were resolved.

    Thanks.

We were talking about this at HDCC. I don’t think it’s so bad. Yes, there are the occasional obstacles, but as Sethpo points out, that problem is hardly unique to bike lanes. Also, now that they’ve been around a while, the usual daily commuters are used to them, know what to do and behave fairly predictably.

I’ve made this analogy before, but here goes: Before Cycletrack, L Street was like a game of frogger. I tried to keep up with motorists — not hard, given that it moves pretty slow — but I had to constantly dodge cars stopping to discharge passengers, queuing up to enter parking garages, cutting across three lanes of traffic for no apparent reason, etc. After Cycletrack, it’s like a lazy river ride. Not fast, but go with the flow and have a relatively peaceful ride.

Whatever happened to the DC I know and love? We had a shade tree mechanic around the corner. Everyone pretty much thought of it as a neighborhood amenity.

To say nothing of the guy who said, “Don’t worry, I keep my lawnmowers in the part of the living room where the roof isn’t caving in.”

Who’s the right contact over there for this? We’re making a push for BTWD at the office and were planning on having an informal Q&A hosted by the regular cyclists in early May-ish.

Call WABA and ask for Daniel Hoagland. He is the Education Director. Either he can do it or assign someone else from staff. Thanks.

I cant come up with the research fast enough but I believe it was Dr. Tanya Byron of UK who did UK’s child safety report recently, whose tag line is “we are raising our children in captivity.”

One of the data points she had was the distance of freedom children experience from home, over time. And I cant pull it up but its basically, in our parents time the freedom they experienced was their town. When we grew up maybe the distance we could go was a mile or so. Now, the distance parents allow their children to go is (a) on the block or (b) the front yard.

Her argument is that this distance where parents permit their children to venture gets shorter and shorter.

For me, that distance for The Kid would be…. um…. Purceville. No wait. What’s further? Harpers Ferry? GAP Trail…..

Is this what you are looking for?
