ParticipantJust so you all know, in the same vein as Calvinball, I, with my helpers kwarkenten and Millie, the arbiters of Doughneuring, & spreadsheet overlords, will award points as we see fit. So a sad, unsuccessful attempt may get you points if reported here. BikeDavid got points last year for posting a pix of “Donuts Sold Out”. So keep Doughneuring!

A triple Doughneuring DNF today. For our Friday Morning Coffee Club ride, three of us rode out to Oberursel and stopped at the Café Castillo in the pedestrian zone. While they roast their own coffee, they do not sell doughnuts, DNF #1. To top it off that gps file for the ride appears corrupted, so I can’t upload to Strava and get no #FS credit for the ride. After getting home I decided to go back out and run some errands to get another ride in for #BAFS points. I planned my route to go by the Tasty Donuts location on Eschersheimer Landstraße, but it turned out they were still closed for Christmas break, DNF #2. Onward and upward. Remembering I saw doughnuts at the Bäckerei Raimund in Ginnheim yesterday, I meandered through Grüneburgpark and Niddapark collecting my day’s #fs2018dirtybiker point. Of course when I got to the bakery at 3 pm they were out of doughnuts and since it was raining and I only had one more kilometer to home I kept going, DNF #3.

ParticipantHey, Eddy,
Not Only are Sleaze Rides an essential component of this game we are playing, I am offering a cherished pointless prize for sleazing in the nick of time before midnight, or just after midnight, to get your ride checked off the list for the day. An extra bonus for the most 2-for rides. See my PAUL Reevere Ride pointless prize thread.
And keep on sleazing, and eat more doughnuts, too.

Starting off the new year with Bold Bite, because we all need something bold with this weather! This is an off shoot of 202 donuts in Bethesda. They don’t seem to have the same selection as the Bethesda location as I’ve yet to see the passion fruit one, or maybe this is seasonal. They do seem to have lots with dulce du lecce, chocolate, or coconut flakes. During December they had a really nice chocolate mint one, I think called peppermint patty. If you go after 3 or 4 pm, it’s 2 for 1 since they have to sell all their donuts. I got the Samoa and a pecan one. Nom nom nom…
David! Excellent First Doungneuring Post!
Bold Bites is near DuPont Circle, which needed a new place since Golden Brown & Delicious closed. Also a location in Union Market.OPEN MON-FFRI

Frozen ears are a thing of the past with this one awesome hack! Use two spare beer can insulators, just slide them over your helmet straps for a winter weather-beating upcycled riding hack! Turn them inside out if you want a modest non-advertising look. Easy to slide off if you actually get too warm. (Inconcievable for me at the moment as it is -5 in eastern Wisconsin right now!). e

The only one I see that seems dubious is Maicon Castilho in Rio de Janeiro. All the others are either, like you, part of the diaspora, or actually live in the DC area but show something different on their profile.
Steve, yes, that Rio guy is the one who stands out, especially since he is on the leaderboard and, if you view his profile, he has joined every Strava group in the world (looks that way to me). I want to see Rod Smith, Patty F, Eric Willians, Judd, or and Bob J, and more legitimate FS riders on the leaderboard, but not this Maicon guy. He seems like a party crasher.

ParticipantThe Strava 2018 “Team” is showing 238 registrations as of December 11th.
I am wondering about a few who, like me, are not in the DC area.
Are all of us who registered from around the globe legit? Is our FS2018 a closed group?
Just wondering.Edelweiss in Colorado

Hello, I am a first timer Freezing Saddles. I ride a out 100 miles a week during the winter, and am the owner of every warm cycling accouterment ever made.
However, I realized that between 1 January and April I will be out of the country for 3weeks total, unable to cycle.
I certainly want to support my team.
Do you suggest I withdraw my registration?
Thanks,

Hirhoward@yahoo.comHi,
I would be happy to have a player like you on the team I’ll be on. There are a fair few participants who have travel obligations and other distractions that reduce their FS mileage and daily riding aims. If you are likely to put in high mileage when you are in town, then I think most of the captains would welcome you.
I will suggest, depending on where you are going, that you can beg, borrow, or rent a bike and get some sleeze rides in. Many FS participants have used BikeShares, friend’s bikes, or done “Test Rides” at destination bike shops to get their mile(s) in. I have done all of the above, and managed to be a daily rider despite traveling every year.
Good Luck! eEdelweiss
ParticipantI like lots of the suggestions being made and debated, but I feel the Pointless Prizes and Reindeer Games are incentive for those who want to participate in social events. As Carol pointed out, Forum posts and other social interaction can’t really be tallied. So I think keeping the social points separate or minimal is a direction I would support.
My second fear is that the Sleeze ride might be re-invented as a 2- or 3-mile ride. I am in favor of loading more points on the first few miles, but not changing sleeze from 1-mile to something more. Reward for riding 2-miles or 3 gets to the heart of FS, Ride More in Winter, but keep the minimum at the minimum: 1 mile, please.

ParticipantFS#18 new pointless prize is for the most Midnight Rides, aka the most Paul Revere-like participant.
Specific parameters coming soon, but essentially for the sleeze rides done at or around midnight. Ride(s) must begin at or after 11:30pm. end by 11:59, and/or begin at midnight and end by 12:30 am. Likely bonus for a 2-for, doing a before and after midnight ride to get 2 days covered in one ride.
Also, riders who commute home late (Carol, you know who you are) can not count the end of the ride unless they stop Strava and start it at or after 11:30, but the intent is to capture those who drag themselves out to get their first ride in before midnight, and those who, for whatever reason, do their sleeze ride at 12:01 to get the ride done for that day.I am requesting the #FS18midnight
I think it is time to reward this uniquely Freezing Saddles riding behavior!

Solution = week of rented fat bike sleaze rides.
Last year I was in the UP on a ski trip when FS17 began; I rode my Mom’s bike at Midnight on New Year’s Eve/Day, then had pre-arranged with a bike shop in the UP to test ride a fat tire bike every day after skiing. I gave the owner a 6-pack of Fat Tire beer at the end of the week. It also earned me the coveted title of winner in the COLDEST-COLDEST ride, as it was about 7 below zero for a few of my rides. You can ride in your ski pants, just not your ski boots.

This year will be my first time to do FS, I did join a few of the organized rides last year. Not really sure what I’m getting into, but I’m sure it’ll be fun, especially, if there are donuts involved!
Never fear, there will be a Return of Doughneuring in FS18.
It will be a bit different, as I now live in Colorado, but my disciples in FS18 will ensure the Doughneuring Challenge goes forward!Edelweiss

You can calculate it whenever you want, but the numbers will keep changing until all rides are recorded. As I recall, the way the leaderboard was set up last year was a “real-time” recalculation where one’s score would change during the day as more rides were uploaded. In other words – someone who logs a ride shortly after midnight and uploads it right away would have a HUGE bonus for that day’s ride, but by the end of the day when folks had uploaded their rides, it would normalize. Folks really wouldn’t know what their score was until the rides were uploaded, though you’d have a reasonable approximation by the end of a given day (since I think most people uploaded on a daily basis). Since this leaderboard wasn’t introduced right away, some of the “early in the competition” noise wasn’t as evident.
As a Midnight Rider, I used to LOVE seeing my name at the TOP of the leaderboard after my rides, and then I had to brace for how far I fell in the standings when I got up in the morning.

I’m in!!! Not so sure about sweet potato donuts though. Veggies don’t belong in a donut, just sayin’
We have to get our fruits and vegetables somehow! Apple Fritters? Cherry Blossom doughnuts in April?
There will be one Chive-Cream Cheese “Everything Bagel” Doughnut at the ride start tomorrow.
Chives are vegetables, right? Lemon Curd-filled Doughnut? Vanilla is a Bean, after all.But I agree–we draw the line at spinach, kale, or broccoli in doughnuts, I think! My route has us sticking to
the sugary, Nutella, chocolate and vanilla icing and glaze, plus of course the iconic PINK Frosted doughnuts…See you there, bring a drool bib (optional) e

ParticipantOk, you will be so sorry if you miss the SEVEN doughnut shop Epic Ride!
Starting with the B Doughnut Pop-Up at Hains Point!!! Get to the start, eat amazing Doghnuts.
From there we will go into DC, Capital Hill and Eastern Market areas, to hit THREE new venues!!
One is the Pretzel Bakery where we have to choose between the Nutella Pretzel Bombs and the sweet yummy cinnamon glazed pretzels. Two other stops in the vicinity offer new sweet delights.
Next we will cross town to Georgetown and visit District Doughnuts again in Cady’s Alley.
Sadly, very sadly, the Bayou Bakery in DC has recently closed, BUT we will burn some calories by cycling up to the Bayou Bakery in Arlington! Yummy beignets, drenched in powdered sugar…

Then back across the Potomac to Smoke and Barrel for a well-deserved beer or cool beverage on the patio. Sweet potato mini-doughnuts are optional.
Still several spaces available, join the fun!! Doughneuring on June 3rd! Be There, Be Round!
