Do it! I rented a fattie on a ski trip in 2016. Mile for mile, it was one of the most physically challenging rides I’ve ever done — but also one of the most beautiful. Here’s my friend snowbiking:
Where was this taken, K?

I remember the day of the big storm in 2016, as I was headed down to the W&OD to do some cross-country skiing I bumped into someone carrying a bicycle down to the trail in hopes that it had already been plowed so he could get a ride in. I missed riding that day, but I think I had more fun. The following day I did bike to work and was one of only two people to make it into the office since the roads were still impassible.
I don’t think that was me, but I made that mistake right in your neighborhood. I rode the completely empty roads to get some groceries and then hopefully tried a different way back. Big mistake.

Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho. We were there with two other friends who aren’t regular cyclists. Two years later, they still haven’t forgiven me for the “death by snowbiking” expedition.

Lots of walking or crashing? If even rideable, it’s a much harder workout depending on the depth and condition of the snow. It’s thrilling partially because it doesn’t happen too often, and when you have a fat bike, you pray day and night for snow during the winter
Even more rare than snow biking though, and potentially more painful, is ice biking. Anyone else ever ride on the C&O Canal?

No, it wasn’t you. I won’t name names, but I will say that it was someone decidedly less evil.

The resort got about 5 inches of wet snow the night before. Even on a groomed cross-country ski trail, it was tough going. My other friends turned around early and ended up walking back most of the way. But that means they missed the best part. When you’re rolling slowly through the snow, with nothing but pristine white snow and snow-frosted evergreens for as far as the eye can see, in utter quiet (well, except for the heaving of your lungs) — that’s magical.

Snow showers in the forecast for Frankfurt for Friday morning and Sunday night into Monday morning. Just saying if you need a #BAFS warmup … plus the Weinachtsmarkt has opened.

ParticipantSnowmachine trails make good fat bike riding if the snow isn’t too soft. Dog sled trails are the best. I haven’t found a lot of either around the DC metro area for some reason? My fat bike has been idle since I have been here except for a couple mountain bike trails.

Not sure if you’re kidding, but it’s because we don’t get much snow. A few years ago at Whitegrass (a XC ski area), I told a friend that works there that I had my fat bike at the lodge and asked if I could ride on the groomed trails, and she looked at me funny and brushed me off. A few years later, I hear they have fat bike races now
Anyways, if you want to ride your fat bike this Saturday (12/2) with a bunch of like-minded foo’s, it’s Global Fat Bike Day. I have set up the DC edition for the last 5 years. This one’s at Lake Fairfax: https://www.facebook.com/events/338128643326390

Are people on really skinny tires welcomed? We will be out there helping with the Cap Cross setup and might be up for some trail riding on a break.

This year will be my first time to do FS, I did join a few of the organized rides last year. Not really sure what I’m getting into, but I’m sure it’ll be fun, especially, if there are donuts involved!
Never fear, there will be a Return of Doughneuring in FS18.
It will be a bit different, as I now live in Colorado, but my disciples in FS18 will ensure the Doughneuring Challenge goes forward!November 29, 2017 at 8:50 pm #1078831drevil

Of course, but do not be upset if you are boo-hissed

Solution = week of rented fat bike sleaze rides.
Last year I was in the UP on a ski trip when FS17 began; I rode my Mom’s bike at Midnight on New Year’s Eve/Day, then had pre-arranged with a bike shop in the UP to test ride a fat tire bike every day after skiing. I gave the owner a 6-pack of Fat Tire beer at the end of the week. It also earned me the coveted title of winner in the COLDEST-COLDEST ride, as it was about 7 below zero for a few of my rides. You can ride in your ski pants, just not your ski boots.
