Participant1/22/21 – Polka dots
Apparently 1/22 is National Polka Dot day
On your ride, find polka dots in all its forms out there; it doesn’t have to be clothing:
Polka dot is a pattern consisting of an array of large filled circles of the same size.Happy hunting!

Participant1/20/21 – The name of any U.S. president starting from FDR or after, but it can’t be on a yard sign or a car.
In 1937, January 20 was the first time a president was sworn in on that date (it was for Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s second term). Prior to this, all (regular) inaugurations were on March 4 after George Washington.
On your ride, take a pic of the name of any U.S. president starting from Roosevelt or after, but it can’t be on a yard sign and it can’t be on a car (sorry Gerald Ford fans
)
Happy hunting!

Pic credit: Demetrius Freeman/The Washington PostPS – If you’re not in this country and you want to play along, take a pic of the name of any president from that country (just let us know what country it is and the name we’re supposed to be looking for in the pic).

On January 19, 1978, the last Volkswagen Beetle made in Germany left their factory in Emden. Find a beetle on your bike ride and post the pic of it here.

Participant1/18/21 – #publicartfinder featuring (or by) a BIPOC
Let’s celebrate diversity on Martin Luther King Jr Day by taking a pic on your ride of public art that either features or is by a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color). It’d be nice if you could let us know the location, and if possible, the artist.
Optionally, post it into Boomer’s #publicartfinder pointless prize as well
Happy hunting!

Participant1/17/21 – Key, Kite, or Lightning: Actual Thing or Graphic (but not the Words)
On January 17, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was born. One of his most famous experiments is the key on a kite flown in a storm to attract lightning. To honor him, take a pic of a key, a kite, or lightning, but here’s the rub: not the words. It can be the actual thing, or a graphical representation of it. Oh yeah since everyone has keys in their pockets, not that kind either because that’s too easy
Confused? See Mr. Franklin’s reaction to answers below…

Participant1/16/21 – the word “Brewing”, “Winery”, “Mead”, or “Distillery” on a sign.
On 1/16/1919, the 18th amendment (aka Prohibition) was ratified. Let’s stick it to the man and flex on how easy it is to get into the “spirit” of things now by posting one pic from your ride. Optionally, you can also let us know if there is anything in particular you like in/from/about this place.
Please be responsible on this quest! 😮
Happy hunting!

Participant1/14/21 – “Benedict Arnold” Anagram Word (5 or more letters, can’t be handwritten or on/in something portable)
It’s the nation’s most famous traitor’s birthday on 1/14: Benedict Arnold
Read below:
- Find a word using “Benedict Arnold” as the base for an anagram, then take a picture of the word out there in the wild. It can’t be handwritten OR in/on something portable (book, magazine, energy bar wrapper, etc). Street signs, outdoor ads, or descriptions on plaques are examples of acceptable entries.
- Don’t know what an anagram is? Basically, jumble all the letters in his name and pull out words using just those letters. For example, one word I can pull out after jumbling the letters is “neon” (it’s just 4 letters, so it doesn’t count in this hunt). Now I just ride around and take a picture of the word “neon” on a sign, a poster, etc. I don’t want the visual representation of that word (like an “OPEN” sign), I want the actual word to be shown in that photo
- For this hunt, the word has to be 5 letters or more.
- The first person to post a picture of the longest word by the end of the day on 1/14 will get 5 extra bonus points. If the post is edited, that will be the time I am considering it posted.
- Remember, just post 1 pic/day (plus follow all the rest of the rules of the game)
Happy hunting!

1/13/21 – “Liam Hemsworth” Anagram Word (5 or more letters)
I thought I had it made when I passed by the sign for Wohlfarth’s gallery. Surely Liam’s middle name is Francis, is it not? Fredrick?
On the off chance that it is not, I humbly submit “metro.”
Ha, we’re gonna use just his first and last name on this photo hunt, but I’ll note using the middle name also for future ones.
BTW, it seems like most people understand this one. I thought this silly idea would be too complicated, but I couldn’t resist doing it. Keep up the hunt!

I have noticed as I ride along the section of the W&OD from Bluemont to Columbia Pike, where it parallels Four Mile Run, that the path has its own temperature. The trail is in a valley, and with the stream running alongside I find that on winter mornings it maintains a temperature that’s quite a bit cooler than the surrounding areas. Likewise, it can be foggier along this part of the trail on foggy days. I guess the topography and the stream create an “isothermal” environment.

Participant1/13/21 – “Liam Hemsworth” Anagram Word (5 or more letters, can’t be handwritten or on/in something portable)
It’s Thor’s brother Liam Hemsworth’s birthday on 1/13.
This one’s complicated, but easier than you think. Read below:
- Find a word using “Liam Hemsworth” as the base for an anagram, then take a picture of the word out there in the wild.
For example, one word I can pull out after jumbling the letters is “mail” (it’s just 4 letters, so it doesn’t count in this hunt). Now I just ride around and take a picture of the word “mail” on a sign, a post office, etc. I don’t want the visual representation of that word (like a mailbox or an envelope), I want the actual word to be shown in that photo
- For this hunt, the word has to be 5 letters or more.
- The first person to post a picture of the longest word by the end of the day on 1/13 will get 5 extra bonus points. If the post is edited, that will be the time I am considering it posted.
- Remember, just post 1 pic/day (plus follow all the rest of the rules of the game)

ParticipantI’ve tallied up to 1/10/21. If your score seems off, please send me a PM and let me know what you think the issue is.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kgsAzaLIXN-IJMjscyNnQTNvWEp__VzgGBSkJDYrTfsA few notes:
- For scoring, instead of giving a 0 for not meeting all the rules, I’m giving .25 points for making an effort. I’ve changed previous 0s to .25
- The two biggest things that folks are getting dinged on are too many pics (only 1/day) or not including the date and the found object (or “Replying with Quote” my request for that day). Please know that it’s not punitive, it’s just so that I can keep track of things more easily on this completely manual scoring system
- Another thing I dinged for were people bringing things from home. I can’t always tell if a snack bar was bought during the ride or brought from home so I’ll give the benefit of the doubt, but a quick release nut was most likely brought from home
Thanks everyone for playing! Still a lot of days left! 😎
