Word or item itself are okay?
For this hunt, yes.
Also, in word hunts, I don’t mind the word hidden in other words. Example for this particular hunt:

Participant2/4/21 – Rose or Rosa
Civil rights hero Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. Because she defiantly refused to move to the back of that bus many years ago, her action has improved all of our lives.
On your ride, find either a “rose” or “Rosa”, snap a pic, and post it in this thread.
Happy hunting!

Participant2/3/21 – “Ritchie Valens” subanagram: the word, 5-letters or more
On February 3, 1959, musicians Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and J.P. Richardson perished in a plane crash in Iowa. The event later became known as “The Day the Music Died“.
On your ride, find a word (i.e., not the thing) on a sign using just the letters in Ritchie Valens’ name. The word has to be 5 letters or more.

Participant2/2/21 – Dog (but not your own)
On February 2, 1925, dog mushers arrive in Nome, Alaska riding through unimaginably harsh conditions to complete the Serum Run. It later became the inspiration for the Iditarod Race and later the Iditabike.
On your ride, capture a dog in a photo out in the wild, and post here.

Participant2/1/21 – the colors Red, Blue, and Yellow in the same picture
On February 1, 1944, Piet Mondrian – regarded as on of the greatest artists of the 20th century – passed away. His painting “Composition with Red Blue and Yellow” was used as the base for one of cycling’s most enduring jerseys: La Vie Claire in the 80s.
On your ride, compose your single snapshot so that you capture all three of the colors that Mondrian eventually limited his palette to: red, blue, and yellow. Just make sure that all three colors are clearly visible. You can use your bike, helmet or clothing on yourself to represent one of the colors. The other two colors must be found in the wild.

Participant1/31/21 – “Henri Desgrange” subanagram (5-letter or more word, not the object)
On January 31, 1865, the first organizer of the Tour de France – Henri Desgrange – was born. Using just the letters in his name, find a 5-letter or longer word (not the object) out in the wild. Same rules as usual for these subanagram hunts, the most important being: the word can’t be on something portable like an iPad, phone, or anything you bring yourself from home.
There is a bonus 2 points for this hunt for one person, to be revealed in the attached picture of the first TDF winner, after the day’s hunt is over. A clue is that it is not about finding the longest word.
If you’re in the DC area where it’s forecasted to be inclement weather, PLEASE be careful, and don’t take any risks for this hunt if it’s snowy or icy outside. It’s just 1 point in a long game.
Happy hunting!

Participant1/30/21 – Skate Park or Skateboard (found in the wild)
On January 30, 1988, INXS land their first and only US #1 hit with Need You Tonight, which was on the album called Kick. On the cover of the album is a skateboard.
Bonus point if you capture someone doing a trick where their board is off the ground (e.g., ollie).

Participant1/29/21 – Mercedes Benz (more points for select colors)
On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz is awarded the patent for the first successful gasoline-driven automobile.
On your ride, capture a Mercedes Benz vehicle. Sounds easy, right? Well, if you want a few more points, find a less popular color as listed below:
- 3 points for a yellow vehicle
- 2 points for a red or blue vehicle
- 1 point for all other colors
Since we’re basing extra points on color, make sure it’s easy to discern (i.e.., make sure it’s not too dark).
You can upgrade your answer throughout the day, but if you modify your post after 1/29, it’ll only be worth 1 point. Also, you’ll only get point(s) for a single vehicle even if there is a gaggle of them in the photo.

On January 27, 1983, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone pressed a switch that set off a blast that completed the pilot tunnel of what was to become the Seikan Tunnel, the world’s longest tunnel with an undersea segment.
On your ride, capture a tunnel with your camera and post it here. Please remember to always include the date and the hunted object, and to only post one pic, so pick your best one

Participant1/26/21 – “Wayne Gretzky” Subanagram: the word, 5-letters or more
To celebrate hockey legend Wayne Gretzky’s birthday on January 26, find a word (i.e., not the thing) on a sign using just the letters in his name. The word has to be 5 letters or more.
If you aren’t already familiar with anagrams, that’s when you mix up the letters within a word or phrase to come up with different words, and just as important, don’t use any extra letters that are not in the original word or phrase. A subanagram is when you don’t use every single letter that is in the original word or phrase.
Sorry, no bonus points for longest word for this hunt, so no need to rush out there in the snow/slush/rain. Just make sure to post it before the end of the day.
Happy hunting!

Participant1/25/21 – Bubbles
The 20th anniversary of National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day is on 1/25/21:
“Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day was the brainchild of the “Spirit 95” FM radio station in Bloomington, Ind. The first one was held in 2001, and included a Bubble Wrap popping relay, a sculpture contest, and a fashion-design contest.”
(Lifted from CNBC’s article from 2012.)I figured bubble wrap might be a little hard to find in the wild during a bike ride, so please seek bubbles, capture them in a photo and post here.

Participant1/24/21 – Apple Logo (but not on electronic device)
On January 24, 1984, Apple sells its first Macintosh, which differs from previous computers because it features icons to start programs instead of having to use command lines.
On your ride, take a pic of an Apple logo, but it can’t be on an electronic device (e.g., iPhone, iPad, Macbook, etc.).

Participant1/23/21 – Pie
I always assumed 3/14 was National Pie Day, but I was off by one letter. That’s Pi Day, but in 1976, a school teacher in Boulder, CO declared his birthday on January 23 to be Pie day, and the rest is history.
On your ride, seek and photograph pie, then if you’d like, share with the rest of us where you can get this deliciousness
Happy hunting!
