2/15/21 – “St Skeletor’s Day” Subanagram (5 or more letters) or Human Skeleton

Single and/or tired of the commercialism/smoochiness of Valentines Day? Then St. Skeletor‘s Day, celebrated on February 15 since 1998, was made for you! Skeletor – He Man’s archenemy – is the inspiration for the day, and it’s all about anti-love and not doing anything special for anyone.

On your ride, scramble the letters of “St Skeletor’s Day” to come up with a real word that has 5 or more letters, and find that word out in the wild for one point. The alternative for two points is to find a human skeleton likeness, but it has to be more than half of the body including the skull (i.e., not just the skull or a just a hand)

    Happy hunting!

    2/14/21 – Heart

Valentine’s Day has dark origins with vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition, such as women being gently slapped with bloody goat hides by drunk naked men. (WHAT?!?!)

Anyways, on your ride, find a heart – either the shape or the word. And you might want to avoid any tipsy naked dudes with goat hides — unless that’s your kink ;)

    Happy hunting!

    2/13/21 – Diner

On February 13, 1960, the first of the Nashville Sit-ins occurred to non-violently protest segregation in the South. It eventually lead to six downtown stores opening their lunch counters to black customers for the first time.

On your ride, find a diner – preferably one you like – take a snapshot of it and post it here in the forum. For an extra bonus point, have both the word “Diner” and at least part of your bike in it.

Please be careful out there if it gets slippery!

    Happy hunting! :)

    2/12/21 – Ox

In 2021, the Chinese Zodiac sign is the Ox, and it begins on February 12.

On your ride, find the likeness of an ox (or any bovine) or the letter combo “ox” out in the wild. If you are seeking the letters “ox”, they just have to be beside each other in that order, but they can be within another word.

    Happy hunting! :)

    2/11/21 – Movie Poster

On February 11, 1847, Thomas Edison was born. Known as America’s greatest inventor, he and an associate (William Dickson) invented the kinetograph – the first camera to take motion pictures on a moving film strip. Fun fact: Edison was a key figure to Hollywood becoming the mecca of cinema due to his heavy-handed tactics with the competition.

On your ride, capture a movie poster and post the picture here in the forum.

Optionally, when you post your pic, let us know what your favorite bikecentric movie is, if you have one.

    Happy hunting! :)

    2/9/2021 – Pizza

Today I went to the converted Pizza Hut in our Reston treasure McTacoHut. Right off the trail at Wiehle Road. While still settling on a name McTacoPup?, I enjoyed a ham & mushroom neopolitan pie. Now I was going to eat half and save half as I am an Affectionato of leftover pizza but it was a beautiful day, the sun was warm, the box was too big for the backpack and more excuses than I can remember, so I left two crust. It was very good. You could even metro to Reston get your miles and finish with a pie. Come on out, I’ll meet you, masked of course.

Not sure you were saying Pupatella was your favorite pizza place, but that is my number one to go. :)

Jo M and I went to Pupatella (in DC) for the first time, and we had a mushroom white pizza. It was amazing. We’ll be back :)

2/10/21 – 5 or 6 point Star (but not on American flag)

On February 10, 2017, Adam Levine – frontman of Maroon 5 – received the 2601st star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. (I didn’t realize there were so many?!)

On your ride, find a star, as long as it’s not on an American flag. On this hunt, we don’t want the word, we want the shape, but lets limit it to ones with 5 or 6 points only.

    Happy hunting! :)

2/9/21 – Pizza! (but not Pizza Hut or Domino’s)
In Bethesda, you can’t go a block without tripping over a pizza place. I went to Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. On the way back, I noticed M&N Pizza’s former location (which has interesting architecture and includes the word “pizza”), but decided against it since it doesn’t currently sell pizza. M&N’s current location is much more nondescript, and doesn’t say “Pizza” anywhere on it. And there was also Aden’s Pizza. However, since only one photo is allowed…

This hunt doesn’t require the word “pizza” to be in the pic, just that it be a pizzeria. Thanks for the recommendation though!

So funny to see such an entry be yours. I was expecting cbganimal, since it’s early afternoon in Spain.

2/9/21 – Pizza! (but not Pizza Hut or Domino’s)

Every year, National Pizza Day falls on February 9. Fun fact, the domain “pizza.com” was purchased in 1994 by the owner of a software company for $20. Fourteen years later, he sold the domain for 2.6 million dollars! I just checked the URL, and there’s nothing even there right now. I guess they had a hard time recouping the money from buying the URL?

Anyways, on your ride, capture the storefront, a pie, or a slice of these doughy, cheesy, saucy slabs of heaven and post it here. The only catch with this hunt is that it can’t be Pizza Hut or Domino’s. Besides, if your favorite pizza is from either of those, try exploring other spots! ;)

If you don’t mind revealing your favorite local pizza joint to the rest of us, we won’t complain. While you’re at it, let us know what you especially enjoy eating there.

    Happy hunting! :)

2/8/21 – the word “Japanese” on a sign

On February 8, 1885, the first government-approved Japanese immigrants arrived in Hawaii as contract laborers for the sugarcane and pineapple plantations. With them they brought their culture, traditions, and food.

On your ride, capture the word “Japanese” on a sign in your photo.

2/7/21 – Superb Owl (or a few alternatives)

Apparently tomorrow is the day of the Superb Owl. Finding an owl in the wild – whether it be real, fake, or art – will net you 2 points. This hunt doesn’t include the word, we’ll actually need the bird likeness. Capture it on your phone and post here in the forum.

I realize that owls may be elusive, so I have the following alternatives, but you have to include your bike in the picture if you are going this route. Also, these will only get you 1 point total for the day:

2/6/21 – Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt

Weirdly enough, this year the 6th of February – one of the coldest months in the US – is both National Frozen Yogurt Day and Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.

On your ride, capture ice cream or frozen yogurt: it can be the thing, a storefront, or a sign. If one of the two last options, it should have the words “Ice Cream” or “Frozen Yogurt”.

If you want 2 points (total), make your photo a selfie holding the ice cream or frozen yogurt. If you don’t want to doxx yourself, cover your face up with your mask/gaiter/buff.

    Happy hunting! :)

2/5/21 – Stationary Clock or Other Time Telling Device

On February 5, 1924, the Greenwich Time Signal (aka the pips) was introduced; it marks the precise start of each hour.

During your ride, capture a stationary clock or other time-telling device in a photo and post here. “Stationary” means something that is affixed or doesn’t move easily, and not something like a wristwatch or phone. Wall clocks are fine.

    Happy hunting! :)
