W&OD westbound from Falls Church was pretty bad: untreated, unplowed, and bumpy from the foot traffic. It was very unpredictable and difficult to stay upright, even on knobby, studded tires. I rode the trail along Shreve Rd and bailed out onto the streets, which were also bad. Saw lots of cars in ditches, some stacked two or three deep. The good news is that I only fell over once, and that was in my driveway. :p

Man what the heck happened this morning. I was in the office by 8am before the crazy snow. Didn’t have any issues.

Roads around Old Town Alexandria where snow covered this morning. Very little treatment, but was easy to ride through.

Riding on CX tires right now.

Might check out the trails when I head home.

I got on the WOD at Vienna heading west this morning.

The Vienna to Hunter Mill section wasn’t too bad, some icy patches.

The worst sections as of this morning are:

    Just past Hunter Mill:

On the decline of the Buckthorn hill:

    Just past Wiehle Ave:

On the approach to Old Reston Ave:

After that there were still some icy patches – I get off the trail in Herndon.

I was on Schwalbe Marathon studs – 700×35.

I’ll report back on conditions with today’s “balmy” temps after tonight’s commute back to Vienna, but I suspect it will take this weekend’s temps to make a real dent in some of these bad spots.

Look forward to your report on the way back. Trying to make a trip to ashburn and back. Thanks

I’ve ridden with the Sunday ride group back in the fall. Pace is 19-21ish usually. The hill of MacArthur Blvd is a good one and got me by surprise. I’ll try the Saturday ride out, hoping to go a tad faster then the posted 12-14 mph. Thanks for all of the replies.

Yep. Aside from the sweeper (it’s a no-drop ride), there were no other employees this past Sunday, I assume due to the DC Tri going on Sunday morning.

The Sunday rides seem pretty low-peer-pressure, considering they are the longer road-ride they offer. It has pacelines, hill work and the nerve-wracking jockeying of/with cars on MacArthur Blvd (especially the curvy sections where drivers misjudge how much visibility to oncoming traffic they really have). The ride leaders enforce the stop and wait at stop lights rule. There are around four or five stop and catch-up points on the < 40 mile course. The ride time is 8:30, but it usually doesn't leave until 8:40-8:45 and gets back around 11:30 (breaking up in Rock Creek as people are often headed in directions other than the shop afterward). The Saturday ride is generally at a slower pace: still cardio not social – but less all out than Sunday (or so I hear). Brendan

Revolution Cycles has a Sunday ride leaving from their Georgetown store that would fit the bill. Capitol Hill Bikes also has a Sunday ride (9am start at the shop on 8th St SE IIRC). Don’t know any Saturday rides but look up Potomac Pedalers, they’re bound to have something.

I looked and most of the rides for Potomac Pedalers are out in Fairfax, VA or in Northern Maryland.

    Thanks for your help.
