Participant14.8 on the commute in and 15.3 on the commute back (usual route).
I park near the C & O Canal take that into Georgetown. I cross Key bridge then take the MVT to Four Mile Run into Shirlington. In the afternoon I mix it up. I find that is important to keep the commute fun and interesting.
I cannot commute from home because the commute would be 68 miles round trip. Plus I have to be at work by 6am. I have to wake up at 3:35am just to do commute halfway as is.

ParticipantI commute for one reason, it allows me to be on my bike more. Everything else is a bonus.

Are you talking about a unicycle handlebar? I’ve seen them on offroad unicycles to help with hopping up terrain, and for comfortability on longer rides.
Did it look like this? http://www.corbinstreehouse.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/img-1892-tm.jpg

Part of the joy of being me is that I can be happy, fluffy, helpful and sadistic all at the same time…. and do so while singing really badly. Awesome that I’m infectious.
That gives me some great ideas for the Alpine Gran Fondo this weekend. I wonder how much damage I can do by singing Men Without Hats for the entire 104 miles???
I think I almost caused the entire peloton of TJROW to crash within the first 3 miles of the ride start in Boston by singing “One Million Bottles of Beer on the Wall”.

I would fall over laughing myself. That is Classic!

ParticipantMaybe not have been the smartest thing but I just rode through it. Got caught at mile 95. The rain felt like needles being grabbed into my eyes. But it passed pretty quicky. Did it in 6hr 30min. Not bad for only the 2nd time on a road bike in over 2 months. Next year I am going to ride a little more road before hand. Great route and ride. Well supported. My only downer this year, It was hard to find people to work with. We left earlier this year then in the past. So there was not as many people to try to ride and work with. Great Times

ParticipantThe Loudoun Dirt Road data base is very accurate. I have checked 99% of the roads myself. There are still some dead end roads I have not listed since they just dead end. The data base was put together for people to make loops. I generally will not add dead end roads at this point. I set it up so people could not edit it because things to get messy with mistakes if you make it public. If you do happen to find a mistake then just PM me and I will make the change. I have been working on this for a few years now and think it a great resource for those who seek out gravel/dirt roads.
BTW, Oatlands rd is a great gravel road. One the nicest in Loudoun.
Along with Old Waterford rd. It is worth it to plan a ride to do both those roads.
Just a comment about using google maps or any mapping software for mapping a route in Loudoun. If the road is not a State or County route (example: Oatlands Rd. State route 650) it is 99.9% of the time a private road. Unless it is in a town like Leesburg.
Google Earth can be a great tool used in finding out if a road is paved or not.

Does anyone have any updates on the WOD? I’d like to ride this weekend, either Shirlington-Vienna or Reston-Leesburg. I know some other folks who would like to get back to commuting by bike and are wondering about the section west of Vienna.
Thanks!
Deb, I was out in Hamilton this pass Sunday. The WOD was clear around Leesburg but not at Hamilton. Hope this helps a little.
