ParticipantI enjoyed the Panda Strike Force, a hazy IPA, at Hellbender Brewing Company. The brewery is near the Ft. Totten Metro Station. They have bike parking right out front.
I hadn’t visited since they opened a few years back. I read they filed for bankruptcy a couple years ago. It seems like they may have/are working things out. I believe they started canning over the summer.

ParticipantI actually think it’s easier to get to 3 Stars by bike than car. I like that 3 Stars makes such a wide range of quality beers. I was happy to be able to get the Resilience, which was a great beer for a good cause.

ParticipantI’m excited Denizens is opening a second location in Riverdale Park in a few months. I had the Lowest Lord ESB, one of my favorite of their offerings.

ParticipantThe weather was gorgeous, and I didn’t want to miss the 100 mile minimum the first week. So, I ventured over to Silver Spring to check out Astro Lab Brewing and Denizens.
It’s pretty easy to get to Silver Spring from Hyattsville. The closure of the ATT near the West Hyattsville Metro Station and poor signage (unless I missed a bunch after the initial detour sign) got things off to a circuitous route.
This was my first visit to Astro Lab Brewing, which opened in October. They have a bunch of IPAs and double-dry hopped beers. I had the SPF 100 pale ale, which was great.
I spread the word about Freezing Saddles to a couple of cyclists, who I thought may be playing based on the Bar Mitts.

I still have a pin and a screw in my right ring finger and it is permanently skewed right and I can’t fully extend that finger. I have enough mobility to type and ride a bike so I’m good overall, but I have to be careful when I shake people’s hands because the wrong grip could aggravate the injury and hurt like the devil.
I’m sorry. That stinks. Thank you again for the warning. I’ll definitely pay more attention.

I think I’ll likely drive down Thursday, and head back up Sunday or Monday.
If anyone is interested in sharing a house (Judd, TwoWheels, SteveO, anyone else registered…), let me know. I’m happy to do some research on airbnb. I can also take one more person + bike with me if someone needs a ride.
Sunyata–can you send me the approx location of where team bikenetic will be? I can see what else is available around that area. I did a quick scan of the emerald isle and it looks like there are still some 3-6 person houses available for under $150 a night.
Thank you for the invitation, Emm. We’ll be taking advantage of being in NC to visit friends and visit some old stomping grounds. So, regrettably, I don’t think we’ll be able to join you all in the travel and lodging arrangements.

Definitely – lots of stops in the area (Streetcar 82 is a couple of blocks away, and Franklin’s a few more) – plus pastries at Shortcake. Something for everyone!

I didn’t know it was Rumi’s establishment. That’s cool. She posted a picture of a Maryland Meadworks jersey on Twitter recently that was really cool. It had a bee with the Maryland flag incorporated.
Methinks a group beerneuring event to support Rumi’s business is in order.

It would make a fun group event!

ParticipantI also stopped by Streetcar 82, which in addition to the Maryland Meadworks, is one of the newest breweries in the Hyattsville area. In addition to opening the first deaf-owned brewery on the east coast and serving good beer, the three owners, Mark, Jon, and Sam have fostered a great community space.
I recently started taking an ASL class they’re offering. While learning languages has never been my strong suit, I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn.
I had the Pooh Bear, a biere de garde, which was good. They’re still working to identify their flagships, and I really liked a previous biere de garde they served, the Roundhouse.

ParticipantEvery time I’ve visited The Public Option ( http://www.thepublicoptiondc.com/ ), I’ve had a good time. Tonight was no exception. It’s a small neighborhood spot, and they always have good beer and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. They pride themselves on paying their employees a living wage and a corresponding no tipping policy.
The Public Option is on Rhode Island in NE DC in the Langdon/Woodbridge area. From the Hyattsville area, I take residential streets through Brentwood, Mt. Rainier, and Brookland. I’m not a fan of some of the drivers on Rhode Island, and ride parallel until I can take a cross walk on Rhode Island to the front of the brewery. From NoVA or other points in DC you can probably take the MBT and take residential streets through Brookland.
I had the ESB, which was a good beer for a warm winter night on the patio.

ParticipantThat’s awful. Your finger looked pretty gnarly after the crash and after the surgery. I hope after the long recovery there aren’t any lingering issues.
I never really considered how hazardous a mulch pile could be. In my area, they require deliveries to be made to a driveway, which makes even more sense after seeing this.

ParticipantI rode over to Maryland Meadworks after dinner. I was pleasantly surprised to catch part of a fantastic jazz band’s set.
If you rode one of the two longer Cider Ride routes, you passed Maryland Meadworks off Route 1/Rhode Island Avenue in Hyattsville. It’s right off the Anacostia Tributary Trail (ATT), so you can avoid Rhode Island Ave. Rumi, who is competing in Freezing Saddles, and her husband Ken run the place. Rumi and Ken have been active in local efforts to complete the 0.6 mile gap between the Trolley Trail and ATT, which is one of WABA’s priorities for Prince George’s County. If you haven’t stopped by, it’s definitely worth a visit.
I had the Bitter Bees. It was tasty.

ParticipantI stopped at DC Brau today. They have 1/2 priced pints of their flagship beers on Fridays ($2.50/pint). For those impacted by the government shutdown, they’re offering 1% off for every day the government’s shutdown with a government ID (currently at 14% off, Friday 1/2 off pints excepted).
Riding on Bladensburg Road can be harrowing, but if you take the Anacostia Tributary Trail and cut through the Town of Calomar Manor, you only have to be on Bladensburg Road for 1/2 a mile. As a bonus, you ride by the historic Bladensburg Dueling Grounds.
I had the always solid, and a bit piney, Corruption IPA.

ParticipantThe organizers just sent a message that the ride’s sold out. They started a wait list if others are still interested. Glad to see a strong contingent from the forum will be going. Thank you again, Sunyata, for spreading the word!

It was an odd article; it almost read to me as if it was written shortly after the meeting, but they forgot to publish it (or were saving it for a slower news day) and then put it out without going back to correct it. For example: no mention of Zimbabwe’s departure, or how AoC Ayers retired around Thanksgiving.
I agree. I got the impression that this, the article on the Bicycle Beltway, and the article on the Long Bridge, were all in some queue waiting for a slow news day.

ParticipantThe Washington Post had an article on the Louisiana Avenue cycletrack :
The District’s long road to building a half-mile bike lane leads to the U.S. Capitol
