I just sent an email to both the GWMP and the public affairs guy for the NPS in the District suggesting that they have the USPP at the crosswalk on the GWMP.

    The Superintendent is at gwmp_superintendent@nps.gov
The Chief of Communications at the National Mall & Memorial Parks is mike_litterst@nps.gov

    Something like:

During the rush hour periods where cyclists will be diverted to the Memorial Bridge, can the NPS arrange for some USPP presence at the crosswalk across the GWMP between the Humpback Bridge and the Memorial Bridge?

Although the crosswalk has rapid flash beacons, during rush hour motorists may be focused on trying to get to work and they often ignore cars stopped for people in the crosswalk. The detour is going to increase the use of that crosswalk so additional measures will be necessary.

Additionally, because the crosswalk is in the District, the right of way rules for DC would apply, a more rigorous standard than in Virginia. It is unlikely most motorists understand their responsibilities.

Without some additional protections at that crosswalk, I am confident the additional crosswalk traffic will result in close calls and collisions.

Just looked at Strava. Last year the temp was about 86F. My Garmin recorded 109F the year before (2016).

It wouldn’t seem logical that the Corps of Engineers or the Federal Highway Administration
(the agency that was posited as the construction agent for the roadway). would be charged with the responsibility for identifying the design criteria for the realigned Columbia Pike. That leaves VDOT or Arlington County, so there may be opportunities for additional engagement.

Meeting was a bit disappointing. The firm that prepared the Environmental Assessment (EA) seemed to have stumbled across some traffic count data but was not able to talk to it. It wasn’t clear who would actually design the new version of Columbia Pike from the top of the hill down to Joyce. By my calculations, it appears that the hill will be long and steep. I’m not eager to share a MUP while I’m heading down the hill at 25-30 mph.

At the core, I think the “conceptual drawing” showing four lanes presupposes the outcome. The traffic counts I’ve found seem closer to Eads Street, which is a busy road with only one lane in each direction. Columbia Pike from the top of the hill to Joyce won’t have parking, driveways, stores, or other distractions for drivers, so traffic will flow more effectively than on Eads. Four lanes do not appear to be necessary.

The comments on other sites seem to suggest that this should be viewed as a bikes vs. veterans, with cycling infrastructure taking away from burial space. I think a open conversation could accommodate cyclists, motorists, and peds in the right of way anticipated. We should be able to make it better for everyone without any impact on the cemetery’s capacity.

The project site is at http://www.nao.usace.army.mil/Missions/Military-Construction/ANCSouthernExpansion/

and comments are due by 22 Sep.

As I develop my comments, I will post them here in case somebody wants to crib my notes.

We have a lot of 30 km per hour (18 mph) zones in Germany with speed cameras. These are not school zones, just residential neighborhoods, some on quite wide streets. I’m just waiting for the Consulate to get notification of my ticket on my bike. ;)

While I got nothing for jrenaut, in a few weeks I may be able to recommend a place to get a Garmin fixed. Just sent my 800 to FixYourGPS to repair (for $58) the rubber back and power switch. He apparently runs a Garmin boneyard and uses those parts for repairs.

I tried to send it to Garmin for repair but after playing 20 questions on their website, their computer said it wasn’t interested in fixing my Garmin.

Would have purchased a new 820 but it seems I would have had to buy new speed and cadence sensors as well. Tonight’s task is to install the app on my phone.

I’d recommend down the Mount Vernon Trail to the 14th Street Bridge, around the Tidal Basin and up 15th Street to the Mall.

East on the Mall (Jefferson) and then north on 7th or 3d. Take a look at the DC bike map to see the route that works for you after you get north of the Mall.

You don’t have to play much in traffic until you get north of the Mall. Reverse (using Madison) in the afternoon.

Great ride up the MVT this morning. Disturbed along the DCA fence south of Gravelly Point by a motorist (?) riding something that sounded like a Honda 50 (does that date me?) working extraordinarily hard on the GWMP. The motor was wound tight and the operator was trying to assist by assuming a full aero tuck. The scene was crowned by the one gallon plastic gas can tied to the back of the motorcycle. You go!

Tree down on the MVT just south of the railroad bridge. Single lane available. NPS GWMP notified by twitter

My wife and I decided that we don’t want to set a tradition of bike birthday presents, so bikes can be given outside of birthdays. I think this makes perfect sense :)

Completely reasonable logic. Only one birthday per year but 364 other days. Dramatically more opportunities for N+1.
