Somebody had fun with the detour sign at the top of the 14th St Bridge stairs. Well played.

So whoever place the trifecta bet on 14th Street Bridge, Trollheim, and the Memorial Bridge has won, big time!

Just got an email from the peaceful folks.

“I removed all signage (mile markers and arrows) from mile 9-14 this morning and plan to remove the remaining signs tomorrow.”

Riding home from the disaster trials, I had the opportunity to run the MVT water hazard.

Water was deeper than I’d seen in the past. My feet were completely submerged as I pedaled.

Does anyone know who dreamed up this mad idea of “fixing” the perfectly adequate 14th street ramp?

Take a look at my post 20 on this thread. NPS applied for and received a grant for this project about five years ago. We crowdsourced (although I don’t think it was a word in 2013) ideas on potential improvements.

While one could argue whether the ramp is the point of greatest need in the area, there are real improvements that can and should be made at that location. That said, the money isn’t likely fungible so not doing this wouldn’t address those other issues.

Just heard from the NPS on the stairway. They said “We are working on a temp runnel. Hopefully installed soon.”

    Stay tuned.

NPS has started their unofficial CX season.

Not sure why the image is rotated. Sorry.

The ramp up to the 14th Street Bridge was closed tonight. While I took the stairs, I doubt I’ll do that often. The fact that the side of the stairs was discontinuous (the stairs got narrower about halfway up) made rolling the bike up a bit annoying.

The community associations have gotten the County to hold a public meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, 27 Sep 2018 at 7 pm. While the community associations will be represented, there is always room for others.

    Details below from https://projects.arlingtonva.us/events/public-meeting-on-mwaas-dispatch-lot-on-south-eads-street/

    Date/Time
    09/27/2018
    7:00 pm-8:30 pm

    Location
Aurora Hills Community & Senior Center
    Multipurpose room

In April 2018 the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) began operating a dispatch lot for Uber/Lyft vehicles on South Eads Street, near Fort Scott Drive. MWAA relocated the lot to the Eads Street site to make room for their Project Journey construction project, but the move has resulted in increased traffic congestion in this area.

Join County officials as they discuss proposals for mitigating the traffic situation and shifting some of the lot’s access from South Eads Street to Route 1. MWAA and Virginia Department of Transportation officials have also been invited to attend.

The meeting will start with a presentation followed by a questions & answers session.

Re the 14th St Bridge Detour

I got this response from the NPS (National Mall and Monuments, not the GWMP)

“We have reached out to USPP. They are aware and familiar with the crosswalk you identified. Officers will be directed to pay special attention to this crosswalk, especially during the early stages of the transition when motorists and bicyclists are adjusting to the change. Due to operational needs and staffing levels, the USPP currently cannot dedicate an officer to monitor the crosswalk, but will incorporate it during their patrols. “

During a count a few years ago, I saw over 600 cyclists use the 14th Street Bridge in a couple of morning hours. That number using the crosswalk would likely cause real problems on the parkway. As motorists become frustrated…., well you know the rest.

My response to the NPS included:

“I think the message board that is currently positioned at the bottom of the Columbia Island ramp might be better used just south of the crosswalk and targeted at the motorists. As we all know, motorists don’t take change well and they likely know nothing of the trail detour. A message on the board that says “YIELD TO PEDS IN X-WALK” (if that will fit) might give the folks using the crosswalk a greater chance of getting across safely.”

Personally, I will probably take the Washington Ave trail on the west side of the Pentagon. I’ll probably go down towards the crosswalk just to watch the shit show.
