ParticipantWell, I tried and failed to get the email for the project manager for the bridge project but instead sent Transform66@vdot.virginia.gov a note suggesting they change the detour to the Columbia alternative. I also cc’d BikeArlington.
I’m sure they would be eager to hear from others as well.
We will see what happens.

ParticipantAs much as I dislike this, I am forced to agree with Steve O.
From Banneker Park, south to Columbia gets you across Lee Highway at a traffic light and you don’t have to ride on Lee Highway.
If you are heading west, a turn on Maple will take you past Bikenetic where you can get pie.

ParticipantArlington County has a short survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WJYWFF7
It was announced yesterday via Twitter https://twitter.com/ArlingtonDES/status/1115383820537204738 with the statement “That lot on S Eads for Uber and Lyft car-staging near the airport? Here’s a chance to express marked indignation or serene acceptance through the Internet. Nonplussed indifference will also be accepted. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WJYWFF7“
While the survey isn’t likely to net any particularly insightful observations, I would encourage you to use the heck out of the comments boxes.
Thanks

ParticipantThe civic associations are trying to keep the pressure on MWAA and the County to address this. Current suggestions are to make the lot gates on Eads entrance only (with those rental lot spike bumps) with all exits onto US 1 (after all, the cars are trying to get to the airport. Another suggestion is to move the lot to the airport and bring employee parking to the Eads Street lot (with significantly reduced in/out). Remains to be seen how good a neighbor MWAA wants to be. They are basically claiming it isn’t their fault.

The scooter companies have and shared all of the geocoded data on the location of scooters with the localities. It’s not perfect – e.g. it’s not good enough to tell if a scooter is properly parked on a sidewalk v in someone’s yard beside the sidewalk – but it’s good enough to narrow whether the scooters are in the vicinity of the trail. I’m not sure what citizen-led counts get us that a data query wouldn’t show quickly, with no volunteer time…
If you know who in Arlington has or will receive the counts for the MVT from this week, please share. What frequency do you think the data is provided? Is the data public or proprietary?
It seems to me that the scooter companies provide a bonus for retrieving and charging scooters parked at hard to reach locations. Maybe if they were to just pay more, the problem would resolve itself with company resources.

hahaha thats a joke, right? The same 3-4 scooters were on one of the bridges by the airport for over a week, and may still be there. Pretty sure some of the scooters I saw on the 14th st bridge this morning have been there all week too.
I actually think scooters are a great idea in theory, but I’m getting pretty annoyed by how they’re getting strewn all over the MVT and 14th St bridges. They’re creating some unsafe conditions on my daily commute.
If I may revise and extend my earlier statement, “I’d think that morning rides would be the best times as the companies have the opportunity to collect, charge, and reposition the scooters they care about.” The goal would be to identify problems and problem locations.
Maybe an approach like the soda can deposit in many areas might work. If a scooter company were to put a $100 deposit down on every scooter they deploy, then they could get the deposit back when they take it out of service at the end of it’s life. Absent that, the community has some cash to deal with the litter. Non-company returns wouldn’t be permitted as that would encourage theft.

Participantthe proposal to pave Boundary Channel under 395 is appreciated. You could get lost in the potholes in that dark tunnel. Hoping they clean the debris off the sidewalks as part of the project

Hi y’all – thanks for the photo on the on the ground reports. I’ve shared this with the project manager, and she’s reviewing comments and plans. Right now, this is definitely still a work in progress, and not the final form. I know there have been a ton of constraints around underground utilities in this area, but I’ll let you know what I hear back.
From my construction experience, it is best to know the “final form” before the concrete is placed. Hoping from a safety perspective that the “underground utilities” and concrete for curbs and sidewalks are never in conflict. If they are, your utilities are too shallow.

ParticipantI’m in. Thanks Judd.

ParticipantHighest water on the Potomac I’ve seen. There was water encroaching towards the trail at the turn for the 14th Street Bridge last night. Must have been deep at the MVT low spot upstream of the Memorial Bridge

As a heads up: 17th will be closed Friday 11/9 from 6a to 4p between Independence SW and Constitution NW for annual levee testing. Watch out for confused and ticked off drivers having to go around the closure (or having to deal with the people having to go around).
Or take the opportunity to go look at the Park Service closing the flood barrier across 17th Street. That will be way cool.

ParticipantFor another Army memorial, how about the First Division (Big Red One) memorial in President’s Park?
If you want to be a bit cryptic, the National Building Museum at 5th and F. First home of the VA (before there was one) and designed by the gent that created Arlington Cemetery and much of the Federal core of Washington.
