Not to take from the needy, but I promise you can get some money for almost anything on CL around here. Just be honest about what it needs.

Yup. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been hit. Probably 10 or 12 times in the last 5 years.

The second sentence explains the first. :)

This is why I love my bell. I don’t like riding on the trails without one anymore. When that fails, singing to yourself loudly enough usually gets you noticed.

While heading into work this past week I past 2 cops in Anacostia/Suitland area and then another not far away. We were grinding up a good size hill and had a laugh with a few of them. I’m sure they aren’t to happy being exposed like they are in rough neighborhoods, but I like it. It’s more of a personable approach to the communities and gives them a few miles in our shoes that they may acknowledge in the future.

Flip side – they probably thought you were completely nuts. ;)

That would be so fantastic. I tried to get a locker at the Eastern Market Metro, but they wouldn’t even take my name for the waiting list. Obviously the demand is there!

That’s strange, I remember reading that demand had dropped in half at that location since they jacked up the fees last year. Metro is doing a comprehensive bike parking study, I’d call them back if you haven’t spoken to them in a while.

If you don’t hear it when coasting, it could be that one or both of your derailers are out of adjustment and there’s some friction from either the cage in front or somewhere in the system in back. I’d start by making sure all your shifters and derailers are adjusted correctly.

The 2012 CX bikes have disk brakes! The first pic above is the Felt version. The Jamis Nova Race has disk also, and price is very reasonable, but we haven’t seen that one yet. The Jamis Super Nova in the pics has the cantilever brakes, but with a new vibration reducing gizmo that seems to really work to prevent squealling and grabbing in the wet (we were able to test since it rained yesterday!) Tonight, hopefully, we’ll get pictures from Cross Vegas.

UCI has decided (in their infinite wisdom) that discs are now legal for cross racing so you’ll see many more disc-equipped cross bikes coming out.

65 degrees, not a cloud around, cars were all polite… this morning’s commute couldn’t have been much better.

I’ve been stopped by a DC cop while crossing the street in a crosswalk on foot, no bike involved, because I was “supposed to yield to the cars”. Needless to say I gave him a quick lesson in traffic laws. A lot of the problem is that DC does not have a dedicated traffic unit. Their officers are assigned to traffic duty now and again but it seems (to me anyway) like there’s not a lot of people in MPD that really know what the law is. There are exceptions, the 1st district bike patrols out of the E St SE substation are great. I’ve met a couple of them and they really know their stuff.

CaBi really shouldn’t be expected to turn a profit just as roadways, sidewalks, libraries, etc. do not. Keep in mind that car owners do not cover the full societal cost of driving, nor do airlines (or their passengers) fully cover the cost for maintaining the aviation system (for instance, the FAA is subsidized by Congress out of the General Fund in addition to the user fee financed Aviation Trust Fund).

I can’t count how many times I’ve made this argument to angry frothing drivers who get mad at “them bikers” getting even a tiny share of funding. Speaking of which – http://www.bikeleague.org/blog/2011/09/get-ready-to-take-action-a-major-attack-on-bicycle-funding/

Update – When I got home Friday I found a much-updated Magicshine battery pack waiting for me at the door. I charged it overnight and I am still in my house and not currently on fire.

Somehow I don’t think you’ll need to do too much PR for this.

I’ve always wondered about intersections like that (where there is a signal as well as a stop sign). I also wonder whether its legally ok to ride through such intersections when the walk signal is lit (as opposed to walking). I know I tried to figure it out a few years ago, but I couldn’t find anything definitive in the Virginia code at the time.

    MUTCD Section 4D.34 –

    Quote:
STOP signs shall not be used in conjunction with any traffic control signal operation, except in either of the following cases:

    A. If the signal indication for an approach is a flashing red at all times, or
    B. If a minor street or driveway is located within or adjacent to the area controlled by the traffic control signal, but does not require separate traffic signal control because an extremely low potential for conflict exists.

The painted “stop”, in addition to not being a valid traffic control device, is in conflict with the signal, in which case the operations of the signal take precedence. NVRPA needs to examine this section as it relates to the W&OD…

I didn’t get a paper manual. Maybe I can get a hold of someone at Giant. Rider + rack + carrier + child + laptop + whatever else I need to bring to work are going to get close to 250.

Maybe I’ll just have to tell my daughter that bumps build character.

Plenty of 250-lb guys ride road bikes, you should be fine. Also consider that you won’t be hopping curbs and whatnot with your child on the bike. The only weight limit I’d make sure to check is the rack itself.
