That is a nice, nice bike… I’m looking at picking up a more racey cross bike this year and Blue frames really catch my eye.

    Update:
I found a guy selling a pair of 650c Velocity Aerohead Deep V laced to Quintana Roo hubs, with tubes, tires (that he claims are in good condition), and cassette for 200. Can anyone speak to the quality of this setup, and whether or not they’re worth the asking $? These would be replacing the Sun Me14A rim / ultegra hub wheels that came with the bike.

Here are some pictures sent by the seller.

    Many thanks,

Those are just the stock wheels off someone else’s bike, and your Ultegra hubs are better than those no-names.

You may want to to take a buddy along if it’s not a busy time of day. There have been reports of robberies on the MBT. I’ve only ridden it a few times outside of rush hour but a large part of it is still on streets rather than a dedicated trail.

Daytime is pretty safe although there have been a couple of incidents, but you can say that about anywhere. I have reservations about a woman alone on that trail at night though. Heck, I have reservations about myself alone out there at night, especially up towards RI Ave. That’s the really sketchy part. Although with the frigid weather they may all be inside…

Traveling dead west this morning was an exercise in cold and futility. My thermometer said mid 30s so I didn’t think I’d need the balaclava. This was a mistake. What a miserable ride in this morning – straight headwind the whole way. I’d better get a good tailwind on the way home or I’m officially on a break from mother nature.

I probably would have put up more of a fight… if they had to scratch the paint off to tell I really don’t see how they could claim it was hit or crashed. I’m very surprised Trek didn’t stand by their product more. Water under the bridge at this point though. With Calfee’s reputation I’m sure it’ll come back better than new.

You’ll like it. I drop by on nice days with my dog since our vet is across the street. They have great drinks and I’m a big fan of their breakfast food (tacos and sandwiches).

    A great one for riding!

But I wonder if I should’ve bothered buying studded tires.

The trails were wet and there was runoff debris in some spots on the roads but nothing too bad. Last night I put on the rear fender that I got thanks to DaveK, and it worked a charm to avoid the back stripe. I should probably get a front one too though. My new shiny bike is getting messy.

Glad that fender worked for you! I’ll have to get the Crud Roadracer fenders if I want to try again for the road bike – there’s just no clearance on mine since the cables are run at the very bottom of the down tube.

    5. Why do Metro trains just randomly stop all the time now? I don’t remember that.

They’re all on manual control now since the Red Line crash in ’09. That introduces most of the whiplash inducing stops and starts, then to make it worse they decided to combine different series of cars in the same train. Since may of them use slightly different drive and braking components, the individual cars within a train stop and accelerate at different rates, leading to an experience something like a 16-yr-old learning to drive a stick shift every time they pull away from or try to stop at a station.

Dave, does your employer use WageWorks? If so, my colleagues and I have discovered a loophole to get around the monthly reset. It’s kind of complicated, but I can explain it if anyone is interested.

Not that I know of, I have to fill out a dead tree form to switch my benefits each time and submit it to HR.

I’m with DaveK on this one. I’d sign up for this if I got the same subsidy as a car driver.

Otherwise, I take the metro about once a week and it’s simply not worth giving up my metro card for that $20/month.

If I could get half and half or some combination it would be better. With the new SmartBenefits rules I now won’t get a bike benefit at all… what I used to do was claim my transit benefit for a couple of months, let the excess build up in my account for emergencies, then switch to the bike benefit for the rest of the year. Now, since they reset the SmartBenefits amount every month, if I want a transit benefit at all I have to forgo the bike benefit. It’s idiotic.

FYI to all. Bike and Roll has lots of rental locations in Manhattan and now that NYC has rolled out lots of bike lanes it’s a great way to see the city. It’s advisable to bring your own helmet though.

+1 – Riding NYC was by far the best choice I made to see the city. It’s still a little bit Thunderdome on the streets, don’t believe all those news stories saying it’s a cycling nirvana. Not quite yet anyway.

Perhaps cars should use the bike lane to make right turns and avoid the potential of a right hook.

Cars are supposed to do this – that’s one reason bike lanes are dashed approaching an intersection, so cyclists expect vehicles crossing/entering the lane to turn.

I think this is just State adopting the $20/month bicycle commuting benefit allowed under the tax code since 2009 – http://www.thewashcycle.com/2009/03/irs-issues-direction-on-the-bicycle-commuter-benefit.html. It would be news if they matched the ridiculous parking benefit and gave employees $200+ per month to bike.
