I wonder if the injury is due in part to the mechanics of riding fixed-gear.
Good thing you weren’t riding geared – the injury might have been multiplied.
Seriously I’m sorry to hear that and hope you heal well.

ParticipantEverything you saw on my track was open except for the bridge. I didn’t ride on Ohio because I’d have to salmon or sidewalk the last few hundred feet to the bridge connector, and I hate both of those things.

ParticipantWish I could be there. Thanks to the shop for running a great ride!

Edit: You go from DC to Arlington, don’t you? I guess maybe that’s why we got different answers, as we approach from different sides.
I do, and the people I asked were DDOT traffic control staff, not cops. The cops were the ones who told me when I got to the bridge that I couldn’t cross.
I ended up backtracking down Independence to 14th St Bridge and the MVT.
/edit – I usually leave my commute riding set to private, because BORING, but this is what it looked like today – http://www.strava.com/activities/78190475

ParticipantTurns out that “Memorial Bridge is closed” means closed to cyclists too. That was an annoying detour. And not one cop could tell me for sure until I actually got up to the bridge that it was closed.

ParticipantBanana Republic non-iron dress shirts make up about 90% of my work wardrobe. I never used to like them until they introduced a slim cut version that fits great. I’ve never had a problem folding them for the ride in my panniers and looking presentable during the day.

First is a Saris Bones 2 bike 3 leg adjustable rack $50
I don’t have a horse in the race here, but this is the best trunk rack you can buy and a great deal.

Once we got to the Lincoln side, there were barriers for crowd control at the March … For someone in a wheelchair… I have no idea what they would have done.
I came through there after my morning ride about 11:30 and I watched two Park Police officers lifting a poor guy in a wheelchair over the curb and on to the grass.

ParticipantI have a several-year-old Magicshine that’s been flawless, but I’m thinking of getting something like the Knog Blinder Road so I don’t have to bother with battery packs. It’s not quite as bright, but for the short distance I’m on NPS trails during my commute I think it’ll be fine.

That’s a great deal. I am looking at spending $250-270 for just the Apex shifters & rival RD. Replacing the 105 shifter on my commuter after the rusted out return spring broke.
I love SRAM because everything is replaceable, without voodoo or witchcraft or Campy-specific tools.

Honestly, I imagine many of the people using this path now just don’t know what the alternative is. Is it really so much of an imposition to put up a sign? You can’t see the alternative from there (which is probably why there was a desire line in the first place).
Now that’s not a bad idea. I imagine by the time this trickles down (it’s technically an Alexandria-permitted project) the stairway and ramp will be done, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask…

Why should construction require that any access be maintained, ever, as long as some inconvenient alternative exists? Like, if they need to lay a comm line in your street, they should just close it for a month on either end of the block because you could still hop over back fences or something, right?
Don’t get me wrong, I think ripping up the fence is a dick thing to do. But that doesn’t mean that the project couldn’t have done a better job in maintaining the existing access, official or not. And we should expect that projects do that, rather than just letting them devalue pedestrian access; it should just be an automatic part of the process, and we shouldn’t be having this conversation at all.
Under the rules by which public entities have to operate, there was no official existing access. You can’t just wink and nod and cut down some plants off to the side of the work site, that’s not how it works. The work that’s going on now is to create a safe and ADA-accessible path from Potomac Yard to the trail, something that did not exist before. That’s valuing pedestrian access.

And note, an external torx is different than an internal torx. I have a set of internal Torx screwdrivers, just in case, although you can generally get away with the next size down allen. My NiteRider battery case was put together with internal Torx fasteners with posts in the middle, which hinders access. You also find those holding together bathroom stalls.
A lot of public transportation infrastructure, bus stop trinkets and such, is also held together with those. It’s sold as “tamper-resistant”, aka you need the right tool.
