Big expensive bridge, that’s why it’s a long-term plan.
To be specific, a bridge that more closely parallels the highway, probably going over the Metro station, Sycamore & the 66 on ramp.

How much of the trail in Banneker Park will be closed? All the way under Sycamore? If they stop the closure short of the trail spur to the dog-park lot, then that would be a more comfortable way to 16th/Columbia (it’s usually the way I go now).
All the way to the east side of Sycamore. The official detour will (almost certainly) to cross Sycamore at the light at 19th.

You cross 66 at a pedestrian bridge. It takes you off the trail from a little after St Ann’s on Custis to Brandmore Castle on W&OD.
There’s one short punchy hill heading west but I find this route very nice. Low traffic and so far drivers have been very accommodating with me at the crossing of Patrick Henry (I have a stop sign, they don’t but I’ve always been waved through).
They were asking about the unofficial 11th St detour.

ParticipantIn the not too distant future, Banneker Park will be closed as well, making 3 significant detours in a 3 ish mile stretch of the W&OD.
I believe the following route will get you around all three detours. The crossing of Lee is at a light, but the crossing of Roosevelt/Sycamore involves turning right onto the major street and then left off of it. So this isn’t a safe-and-comfortable route, but a route that could do for a confident commuter.

Where does that end up crossing I-66? Either that or can someone direct me to that thread? I do recall that thread but just gave up looking for it. I always have trouble with the organizational structure of this forum’s posts.
Patrick Henry

ParticipantThanks for posting. I can’t make it, but would it be possible to raise the issue with root heaves on the trail from the TR Bridge to the main MVT? They smoothed these heaves a few years ago, but they need to do it again. People biking can build up speed going downhill, and the bumps aren’t easy to see, and so they could cause a serious crash.

There are two places that I can think of, both south of Alexandria.
I believe this is also in the NPS regs on the GW Parkway. But I don’t have time to look that up today.

Asking for a friend just starting a job on The Hill. Recommendations for bike facilities?? Parking? Showers? Senate Side. Dirksen.

Back in 2014, you could get a sticker to park in the garage – talk to security. There were showers in the gym (with towel service). Overall a great place to bike to work.

I would guess that this is because some of the difficulty in differentiating a Class 2 being run entirely on throttle versus something that’s really an electric moped or motorcycle.
First of all, most class 2 also have pedal assist. The throttle is a boost, essential for people who need help.
Second, what does it matter? the top speed isn’t faster than the road bikes that are allowed so…

But I’m not sure how that is supposed to work while they realign the trail by moving the intersection away from the retaining wall.

I would imagine they will put in the new asphalt, then route the detour over the new asphalt while they take out the old asphalt.

Well now I won’t know when to stop ignoring the trail closed signs.
I’m fairly certain it will be obvious.

ParticipantJust got word that the County has a contractor to repair the W&OD. They could start as early as Friday, September 13 (though it might be later), and should take “a couple weeks” (but might be longer).

ParticipantIf only there were an alternative route on a continuous bike lane to the north of this stretch.

Nope. I waiting on red to turn left, got a green light, turned left asap, and walk signal was red. So unless it was a 5 second long walk/count down signal, it never turned.
ARRRRGH! (thanks for the update)

ParticipantI’ve seen suggestions to use a bar end to replace that kind of thing, though you’d have to figure out some trick to attach it.
A friend who rides horses said that farriers (people that make horse shoes) might be able to do welding on things like that.
