Any word on when the construction will be done on the EAST side of Lynn Street in that intersection (across the street from Gateway Park)? Those jersey barriers make it tough for folks turning left on Lynn after rip-filtering down Lee Hwy with all of the gridlocked cars and buses.
I don’t know, but I think we’ve still got a while. Arlington prioritized doing the trail first (yay!) but I think that means we’re only 1/2 way through the project.

Does anyone know if the Bikometer will be reinstalled near the IoD? (I have not been there since Sunday if it is now up.)
I am 99% certain it will be installed (they’ve even marked out where the sensor cuts should go) but do not know when.

What’s at the east end of it – an all way stop sign? I always found crossing 19th St to be a little hairy – there are crosswalks but they’re generally ignored.
19th does not have a stop sign. You have to be very bold in those crosswalks to get drivers to stop.

Bikeshare has indicated they’re happy to share that information with the police. Still waiting to hear anything from the police since our online theft report.
I would email/call

I thought about this and let it sit overnight, and I still can’t figure out why Dewey is making the TR bridge suck?
Not Dewey in particular, but the TR bridge sidepath is NARROW, and having people use that entrance/exit, with that difficult to navigate turn, is going to make using it to go east-west even worse. Not Dewey’s fault or the fault of people using it.

I looked again this morning and it is also possible to not go up to the TR bridge path but when you pass the KC Reach building turn left and follow the path around to the entrance that becomes the sidewalk for the ramp to the KC underground parking garage. You could cross the ramp and ride up the road in front of the Kennedy Center plaza, but there is no crosswalk there and at 10am this morning the garage ramp had a fair amount of vehicle traffic from buses and delivery trucks so did not look very inviting, instead I rode up to the TR bridge path which I think the designers intended for bicycles.
This is a horrible design flaw. They should have made a safe path up the ramp to parking — there’s a lot of asphalt there and no space on that sidepath

Here is a recording from this morning’s commute showing the new bicycle pedestrian bridge at the Kennedy Center
I was surprised to see you connect to the TR bridge rather than continue onto the main street. That’s going to make the TR Bridge suck more.

ParticipantI don’t know about VDOT, but I would imagine this could help Arlington. Will this be available to Arlington? To advocates who might want to see it?

I hope that in doing the reconstruction they either raise the whole path a few inches or add a raised lip at the water’s edge so that the trail doesn’t flood as often.
I’m fairly certain this didn’t happen. They’re rebuilding as it was.

Thanks for sharing. So many blatently untrue statements. Crossing at the intersection is perfectly legal. The delay in rebuilding had nothing to do with getting approval — we haven’t gotten it yet, and we fixed all the roads & playgrounds — or because the trail is NoVa Parks — this part is County-owned– the delay was simply because the County didn’t prioritize getting it fixed.

Just heard from County Parks that repair work on the W&OD tunnel under Wilson Blvd is complete and tunnel is open. If someone could post a pic, that’d be swell.

Less than 3 months after the storm, only ~2.5 months after all the roads were repaired, and ~1 month after all the playgrounds were repaired.

Hows the width clearance? So far I have only driven a car beneath that new bridge — but it seems very narrow for bikes + pedestrians simultaneously?
As someone who has seen it from the TR Bridge sidepath, it seems luxuriously wide.

If the person can’t be seen, he can’t be seen. If you go out in the street on a moonless night in all black, you could be completely invisible to drivers. It is absolutely a driver’s responsibility to drive carefully and slowly and look ahead, but it is possible for a driver to not see someone, at all, until it is too late.
Nope. It’s the driver’s responsibility to have lights on their car, and to drive in a manner in which they can see with said lights.

If someone drove a car around at night with no lights on, we’d hold it against them too.
Wait, so you know this…
Also, per ACPD’s data analysis, victims in crashes (in Arlington at least) are not disproportionately wearing dark clothes at night.

ParticipantOh, and if you’re in NoVa, ElectriCity is bringing a bunch of eassist cargo bikes to the Arlington Fun Ride @ Arlington Mill on Saturday 10/5 10a-noon. Good opportunity to see, talk about, and test ride a bunch in one place. Plus, there’s a Phoenix fundraiser at the same time!

ParticipantI’ve had a number of ebikes, mostly cargo bikes for hauling kids, and have followed the discussions of all sorts of eassist.
My advice: find a shop you like that’s convenient for you. You will have problems (it’s a machine, things happen), and you want to know who will help you. The more convenient it is, the sooner you’ll take a bike in when you need to, which will get you back to riding fast and keep the bike in better shape.
Test ride some bikes from there. If they don’t have any in stock, ask around for people who have what they carry (and recommend) — you’ll probably find someone to let you test ride. Buy the one you like to ride.
As far as Rad bikes — I hear good things, but you get what you pay for, and I urge you to figure out what bike will service it before you buy.
An ebike will change your life. It takes all the excuses out of riding (ok, almost all
. It’s just worth it. And if you find you don’t use it, resale is good. Have fun.
(you=her for all of this, of course)

DC Police reacted to last night’s post by Dr Gridlock warning of the Shut Down DC climate protest disrupt this Monday morning, there were 4 bicycle police on the East side path of Key Bridge this morning, didn’t look over to see if they were on the other side as well. Were there police on the other Potomac bridge side paths?
I saw 8-10 police cars on the DC side of the TR Bridge (westbound direction, in the median, where the machine to move the concrete divider sits). Most were unmarked, but had lights on, but the few that were marked were all VA State Troopers…

ParticipantI’m sure you’ll do great.
What helps me is to remember my audience in these things: I’m not arguing with the other dude on the dias — I’m there to convince the audience full of nice people who probably drive a lot, but also walk some. Most of them bike every once in a while — like on vacation, or when it’s a nice day — because it’s fun.
Appealing to them as nice people who sometimes drive can help.
– “I understand that change can scary. But I also drive and I get frustrated with congestion. People like to live here – in fact, more people are moving here than leaving – so congestion is only going to get worse, if people keep driving at the same rates. Let’s look for solutions for that”
– “I see how it can be scary to drive around people biking — I’ve done it and I worry that one mistake from either the cyclist or me is going to lead to a serious crash. That’s one benefit of protected infrastructure — it gives people biking a specific place to ride, and minimizes the places where drivers have to interact with them. And people on scooters can use it too!”
– “The thing about sidewalk riding is that people on bikes don’t want to ride on the sidewalk. But it’s more important to be safe, and too many of our streets are unsafe. The better solution is to give people safe places to ride bikes, which in turn will give sidewalks back to people walking.”
– “This goes back to the congestion issue — the only way to move the number of people we need to move using cars would be to build more streets. But Alexandria is fully built. So building more streets would mean tearing down buildings, or spending tons of money to use vertical space. We’re not going to do either of those things. So how can we make it so the people that _need_ to drive can actually get where they are going in a reasonable amount of time? We have to get everyone who is willing to not drive — take transit, walk, bike — to do that. “And if all else fails, remember you are a nicer person than Mr. Townsend.
