ParticipantNeed to be a bit more deliberate, as it is not hard to drink coffee in Germany. Knocked out #2 today while my boy played baseball with the German sport club we joined. Went to Bäcker Strohmaier in Aldingen down (north) the Neckar from Stuttgart.

ParticipantI have two to report.
Sunday morning (20/1), jet lagged, I joined a local CX race (non-UCI sanctioned) and went ahead and fell over while descending a short steep drop at low speed. Mostly fine, other than the cacophony of laughter from the Germans and some pointers on how to ride a bicycle.
Today (23/1), I just went ahead and dumped it over on a frozen gravel trail. Oddly, no torn clothing, and a tiny bruise on the outside of my right calf muscle…and torn bar tape (need to rewrap the bar anyhow)….I missed the big rocks and giant frozen mounds of mud from the logging trucks.
Not sure if they count, though, not due to ice or snow.

ParticipantDid my first OOB Coffee Ride yesterday to Dürrlewang, a suburb of Stuttgart. Big h/t to @consularrider for reminding me to add the hashtag. Pictures in the Strava (edited to be in the post now)

ParticipantAh, excellent. Just saw the email. Apologies for not being at HH last night. I’m only in town TDY and happened that my brother was also in town last night. Had to make choices…but, I’ll do my part on the pedals. Super excited to be part of Lucky Team 7.

ParticipantJust a thought. The rules for accountability this year seem to be a bit more involved (based on a discussion with Chris Watson at coffee this is to ensure people who are signed are committed). I realize the leadership are working on a volunteer basis, but I think we need to get a Strava club set up ASAP. I’m willing to do it, I just need everyone’s Strava usernames and then I’ll make sure our Team Captain is the Admin for it. Thoughts?
Also, our team is not showing on the FS website (though I’m in an airport on my phone, so it could be me). Also, I am currently not showing up on individual rankings…though I was this morning just before I took off for a shortish ride to get a good ride day. If anyone else is having this issue, I think we need to get it raised ASAP.

ParticipantW&W, I’ll be there! As luck has it, I’ll be in DC for a few weeks for work, and I’ll even have a bike!

ParticipantI know some of you, and most I don’t. This is my second year doing Freezing Saddles, and I am known to circle Arlington..a lot. But, since I moved to Germany in September 2017, I won’t be circling Arlingtoon, not even once this year. I’ll ride as much as I can, but I am already on tap for about 20 days of travel for work that will preclude riding during the competition. I’ll do my best to add points, and be sure to get a frozen saddle as often as possible.

And a few others… +1 for tolerable riding for anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours for my 10 digits that were nipped by frostbite about 15 years ago. Going with lightweight wool socks is the key in this arrangement, the thick ones make you sweat too much and then you have wet feet.

The Strava 2018 “Team” is showing 238 registrations as of December 11th.
I am wondering about a few who, like me, are not in the DC area.
Are all of us who registered from around the globe legit? Is our FS2018 a closed group?
Just wondering.Edelweiss in Colorado
I hope not! I moved to Deutschland (near, but not next to) Consularrider…I need this, I need to get my riding back on track after this fall.

In Europe where the negligence laws are different and responsibility almost always lands on the driver (opposite of the U.S.), it might actually be anger.
The anger in Europe (or Germany, which is about all I can personally comment on) seems to precede the collision. After, it is still fear…the penalties can be quite severe if the motorist is found at fault, even partially (and, often striking a cyclist makes it quite clear that the 1,5m passing clearance was not given, so there is a degree of near automatic culpability). Regardless, it seems, in my experience that it take me a year to rack of the same number of close calls in Germany that I can rack up riding in this area in one month.
