this morning’s commute:
saw culimerc, then crysb, then crashed on ice at WOD/Custis turnoff, then saw eminva in gtown, who also just fell on ice.
the guy behind me who saw me crash said he just fell too – i think the same spot as eminva, crossing cedan lane?
ice: +3
Ugh, I should have shouted a warning about the W&OD/Custis ice patch. I almost lost my footing (wheeling?) there, and took it a lot slower the rest of the ride. DC had no ice anywhere, so I didn’t know what I was in for in VA.

ParticipantI can’t speak for the Tour de Cure, but Bike MS “Ride the Riverside” (this is the DC-area one) was a very well-organized and well-marked ride. I rode the 60-mile on Saturday and the 44-mile on Sunday last year. This was also my first organized ride, but looking back after doing a few others, I have to say the Bike MS organizers really do go all out to provide great, stocked pit stops with food and mechanical support – and there’s a great celebration party afterwards with free pizza, pasta, salad, cake, and beer. Volunteers even provided me with sunscreen when I lost mine. The route is hilly, but there’s only a couple of major hills and the rest of it is pretty rolling. Last year’s route did involve a few narrow shoulders on the 2nd day, which I hope is what they’re changing. Lots of fun, lots of riders, tons of support.
My ride report is here: http://www.crystalbae.com/2012/06/11/bike-ms-2012-ride-report/

I think the DC CX race was a *tiny* bit closer to that. Also mix in the Crystal City Diamond Derby.
Yeah, the run through the van reminded me of Diamond Derby! Except in the Diamond Derby you brought your bike through the van with you. Meaning we’re more hardcore here. (Or our vans are more spacious.)

ParticipantI’m down for blueberry soup and green beer! Registered yesterday.

ParticipantThanks to Freezing Saddles, I rode 309 miles in January (with one week off for work travel). That same period last year, I rode maybe 10 miles total. Huge jump! Winter riding ain’t all that bad on most days.
That being said, can February be over already?

I noticed there were a lot of commuters out there this morning too. In fact, even the bike rack at work is about half-full, which is no different to most of the year.
My work’s bike rack has only one other bike most of the time – the one that’s been abandoned there for awhile. Sad. I’ve gotten two of my coworkers to start bike commuting occasionally, but that went on hiatus once the weather started dropping.

ParticipantRacing with the other neighborhood kids around the cul-se-sac growing up. It was fun to see how far you could lean into the center without falling (we did fall a lot).

I had noticed that your day 8 rides weren’t posted yet…but my point remains: A 4 person team will need to ride an extra 11 miles just to keep up with a 5 person team with one member riding the de minimus 1mile. Of course when rcannon allocated the riders the formula took into account both # of miles ridden and # of rides per week, but I just wonder if the 4-person teams will be at a slight disadvantage.
I suspect that Team 10 wont be the only one to suffer a mid-January lull in mileage. I’ve certainly been pushing myself to ride *a lot* more than I otherwise would -and I think the excitement of the first week will probably wear a bit thin as we get to Feb.
I’d like to add that one benefit of the challenge is getting people to ride more through the winter. I’ll praise anyone who is riding more often than they normally do, even if it’s only a mile a day.
Since the handicap calculations took the days per week bonus into account, it should work out to be a fair challenge. If everyone who was only riding once a week starts riding every day, can’t complain! Just getting on the bike on a cold day might be the hardest part anyway.

ParticipantAppropriate that Kel is giving out likes for all of these responses too. Continuing her streak!

Just moving this up since I think it was lost on a page flip today and would like to spark a discussion.
Also – team Liebe Zu Dritt moved up from 9th to 6th place. We are staring you down team FourQuatroPho. Whop Whop my Liebe-ies
Consider it brought.
Team 4, I’m away from a computer for the weekend so my rides will go up on Sunday!

ParticipantMake sure to stretch and strengthen your hamstrings as well! All quads = bad for knees. I think being clipped in might help for this but can’t say for sure.

ParticipantI’m interested in joining for the ride and tastings! Thanks for putting this together. Port City makes some good stuff.

No worries. He left me at the turn off from mvt to my house. He still had to turn around and ride back home (15 miles? we met at gravelly and had each done about 8, so that seems about right), and said something about still more after that running errands… My legs are done for the day, but he was nice enough to not leave me eating dust somewhere along the way. We refueled on pho just before he dropped me on my way home, so he should have plenty of energy for more miles (thanks, team 4!).
Sorry I got there late and only got to say hi briefly! I misjudged how long it would take me to get from Hains to Old Town. I think the next event should be something like a happy hour, where it’s easier to come and go as you please (hint to anyone who might want to put one together).
It was nice riding with everyone at Hains. Good showing from the forum folks!

You can always come eat pho in Old Town afterwards!
I’m planning to do both! Hains Point is sort of on my way to Alexandria, so I’m down for at least a few laps. Not sure what time I’ll get to Hains Point because I’m going to try to bring my better half, too.
