Also, when was this photo taken? This looks more like fall biking. Not winter. To all the non-riders who look at this picture it makes winter riding look like an easy October mosey to the farmer’s market, instead of the snot covered, red faced, numb toed, ice covered, cold but sweaty mess that winter riding really is.

I think you could change this to doing a sleaze ride period because who would ever go out and ride 1-2 miles, 5-10 minutes, for absolutely no reason unless it’s to get the 10 daily bonus points. If you’re not running an errand, there’s no point(s).

It is funny, Strava is periodically blocked here at Census and then quickly unblocked. I suspect there is some Strava nut on some sort of web security review board who unblocks it.

Haha, nice. We have strava thankfully. But I just ran into a new problem, which is much worse for ride planning purposes. I can open ridewithGPS, but I can’t login to edit anything. Damnit! I used to spend hours (shhhhh, don’t tell Uncle Sam!) planning long weekend rides during lulls in the work week.

I just checked, and hilariously, I can login to Mapmyride, and create a route. Anyone know if their elevation data as caught up to the likes of ridewithgps yet? That’s why I initially made the switch away.

Raymo, maybe you should get Census IT to classify freezingsaddles.com as porn like NOAA did. Therefore you won’t be able to do as much obsessing at work. Since I can’t keep up with it at work, my interest level is lower than I would like. It’s just that when I get home, I have 100 other things to do as well and freezing saddles isn’t in the top 10.

Part of the fallout is that although I’m meeting all of my personal goals so far this year, I’m not doing as well with points because I’m just not going to suit up for a 5 minute ride for 11 points every day. More power to the people who do, but I have other things to do.

Creadinger, think you can manage to squeeze in a 600K before March 20th??

Haha! No, unfortunately. My goal this year is a 300, and maybe a 400, depending on if I want to kill myself during the 300s or not. Those don’t happen until April-May though.

We need to get Kurt Searvogel on our team. He’s one of the guys attempting to break the 75,000 miles in a year record set back in the 30’s. That’s 205 miles/day! That would be one hell of a sleaze ride.

On Saturday DCRand is running their annual 100K Populaire ride if anyone is interested. It starts in Glen Echo, MD. I plan on doing it, but the current weather forecast is looming with possible rain/snow. Not good. I did both November and December 200K rides in all day rain, and I’m kinda tired of it.

The ride is free to participate, but it’s requested that you pre-register, so they know how many to expect and how many post-ride snacks to bring. If you’ve been interested in doing more long distance riding then this could be the ride + meeting for you. There will be lots of discussion about the upcoming PBP 1200K this year, which is kinda like the World Cup for randonneurs.

    Here’s an info link.

While, this ride is free…. To participate, I think you’d have to join the DC Randonneurs club, which is $10 for the year. Once you’ve joined you can do all of the other club rides, like 200, 300, 400, and 600K rides for very nominal fees.

It’s a small price to pay.

Be careful over there a Navy Yard employee on bike heading home around 5:30pm was stabbed by a lone knife-wielding young man on 7th near F and G streets. It sounds gang related since I don’t think anything was stolen.

Thanks for the sentiment, but I don’t know how one can be careful when dumb motherFers want to F with you for no reason. It’s not like avoiding potholes or being a PAL for drivers.

Unfortunately Navy Yard is only 2/3 of my commute. After passing by there I cross the Anacostia and climb up to Suitland. It does cross my mind sometimes when watching the news, how many random murders in SE would it take for me to say, “nope! I’m not riding through that shit anymore!”. But so far I haven’t reached that point. For some reason (cheap land), the federal government saw fit to put large Census, NOAA and Navy buildings out in the wasteland of Suitland, and there a few of us who commute out here pretty regularly. Raymo being one other.

I hope the Navy employee will be ok. No doubt that the “young man” needs to get his face stomped by a big cleated bike shoe.

Navy Yard folks. Do you know if there’s a rhyme or reason to the traffic messes that happen around that area in the AM?

Since the Maine Ave area has become a pit of hell these days with the wharf construction, I decided to alter my commute to avoid it. My commute now goes by the east side of Navy Yard on 11th St, and today it was a complete clusterf*&k. It was becoming a gridlock situation with cars backed up at intersections as far as the eye could see, and only 1-3 cars would get through the stoplights in lanes that turn into the Navy Yard. Other days, it’s no sweat. Seemingly no extra traffic and everything moves smoothly.

    Why the difference??

“far”? How about at all? Sorry to my teammates, but I’m not risking a broken collarbone, elbow, wrist or whatever by riding on ice to get 11 points in BAFS.

I’ve always wondered why BMIs are based on the square of the height rather than its cube. It would seem to me that taller people tend to have wider shoulders and are wider between their backs and fronts of their rib cages. Volumes are inherently cubic things, not square things. This probably is the reason that tall, fit, muscular people are almost always classified as overweight.

As a completely side discussion to the sidebet, and no offense to Mikey for picking this stat…. but THANK YOU! The BMI is complete bullshit for people who are outside the normal height ranges (who knows what the ranges are). There is absolutely NO way that a person 6’5″ would be healthy if they weighed 156 lbs. If I dropped 100 pounds (eating disorder thin) and then had both arms amputated I still wouldn’t get down to 156 lbs. In high school I was 6’5″, a stick and I weighed 195.

Of course I am overweight, but it bothers me to be in the obese category, but anyway….

    6’5″, 268 lbs which is a BMI of 31.8
