ParticipantWow! I’ve ridden by that tunnel like a dozen times on Mill Road and never noticed it’s existence. Where the heck does it come out? Behind that Extra Space Storage building and up the sidewalk to Duke St?
creadinger
ParticipantYep, I’m still awarding 2 prizes for the coldest ride, and the longest ride on the coldest day (operation deep freeze). No patches this year, but I will have something pointless to give out.

ParticipantDon’t look now, but the Corporation currently has a healthy lead in the Team average speed category!
We’re not going to win points or miles, but maybe this is something we CAN win. I don’t know how, it’s certainly not my (lack of) speed that’s putting us up there, but we’re currently at 13.69 mph, so make sure all of your future rides average faster than that to keep us on top. The Slackers are behind us in 2nd place at 13.55 mph.
Woohoo! Only a couple of weeks to go. Looks like winter is going to slap us again in the face again this weekend, but the bright side is that a snow storm may actually miss us to the south, which is a rare occurrence. Hopefully winter’s sting will diminish next week.

At the George Mason Dr/W&OD crossing (7 lanes of traffic due to left/right turn lanes) this morning during rush hour
Me: riding west, stopped at the red light
Cyclist A: riding east, stops at the red light across the intersection from me
Cyclist B: riding east behind Cyclist A, stops as well
Cyclist A: seeing a gap in cross traffic, decides to run the red and is successful
Cyclist B: a few seconds later, tries to do what Cyclist A does, except gets caught right around the double yellow lines as cars in the lane behind him and 2 lanes in front of him pass through; he’s in No Cyclist’s Land at this point
Me: thinking, “Oh no, he’s gonna get hit!”
Cyclist B: stops at the double yellow lines, turns towards oncoming traffic, stops 2 lanes of traffic, puts his hand up to thank the drivers, and sheepishly goes back to his side of the crossing to wait for the green lightI see people do this way too often at this intersection, and I’ve seen a couple of near misses like the one today. The cyclists and joggers that run the red here don’t realize how fast drivers are going on George Mason Drive during rush hour (they drive faster to make up for lost time due to congestion), and many think they can easily jet across 7 lanes of traffic when there is a gap.
That’s the same intersection where a couple of years ago I found that the light for George Mason turned green with 3 seconds left on the pedestrian countdown to CROSS George Mason. I think that problem has now been fixed. There’s just way too much going on to try to jump the light there.

ParticipantI happened to check the FS leaderboard today and saw that team 12 was at exactly 10,000 points.
Then I glanced down at my score – exactly 1,000 points! Weird.

I want one. Do you have an Antarctica connection? Or is that just an example.
I do! I was deployed on the USCGC Polar Star for Jan-Feb last year for Operation Deep Freeze 2016. I work at the National Ice Center as an ice analyst so I helped them with operational support to clear a channel in the ice to resupply McMurdo. It was a pretty amazing trip! These 2015 patches were what I gave out for my pointless prize last year. Unfortunately the CG never got around to making ODF2016 patches so I could have one for myself. But I thought something similar might make a cool prize for the coldest rides during FS.

ParticipantAny other interest?? I would need at least a dozen or so to be on the hook for that amount of money. The patches would look similar to below… however, instead of Antarctica would have a snowflake, and instead of the North arrow a bike wheel of sorts, and with different wording obviously. Walter is going to help me design something, since I have no skills at that.

ParticipantWhere do you think I got the e-mail for the guy I’m consulting with. Heh. Yeah… patches are just expensive, and they have to be made in batches. Anyway, I think if I go ahead with this, it would make the most sense to just take off the year so they can be for any year. Anyway, I’m still deciding.

ParticipantHey guys, great idea! Sadly, I will be in service to the gov’t on the 25th but that’s ok.
But the route actually helps me with the loop that I do out to Wegman’s and back sometimes, so it’s already a win. Mt. Vernon Hwy does indeed suck in places.

Two-Week Bonk
Hey Team 12,
Sorry to report that I’m on the sidelines for two weeks. Had a basal cell thingy excised from my calf, and now I’ve got stitches. Crap.
If you need to replace me, that’s fine. Sorry about the timing- not my choice. DaveDon’t worry about it. You’ll get back to it when you’re healed. Just glad it wasn’t full blown cancer. Every frickin time I go see the derm she cuts something else off. It’s highly frustrating and I feel your pain.

I’ll also see what I can do about sabotaging some of the other big mileage riders that live my way in MD.
Yay, we got Eric! You’ll be great, and welcome to the team!
By sabotage, do you mean maybe stealing a Mr. Williams’ chain when he’s not looking? That would be a good prank.

ParticipantThis is high drama!
As an asset on a business unit that is experiencing harm by being short 1-2 members we are looking forward to the INcorporation of the alternates.
Sincerely,

There is a female on your team (akbald01).
Oh good. Well, hopefully we can all get together for a local ride or coffee or beer sometime in the next 2 months because some of your forum names are familiar, but I don’t think I’ve met any of you in person except The Corporation (BobCo)

ParticipantI could be wrong but is this an all dudes team? Maybe our name could reflect that? Like Sausage party or something similar.
