From the Group Ride thread. Note, this ride with probably have a couple of the dreaded MD Inquisition along, so please take appropriate counter-measures.
I’m thinking about taking a lunch ride up to Bmore on Sunday March 8, leaving Proteus at 9am (note that’s 8am for people who didn’t put their clocks ahead the night before for daylight savings time). Lunch at the museum (has a nice cafe-restaurant) and return probably by about 3pm. 67 miles, quite a few small punchy hills, moderate pace (14mph-ish). Usually take a 10 minute stop to get snacks and drinks halfway there and halfway back. Will need a lock for when we’re at the museum. All are welcome. Follow http://www.facebook.com/proteusbicycles for last minute or weather related updates. This is a really nice ride, mostly out of traffic and surprisingly scenic. -Jeff
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2449007I can’t do the 8th, but I just posted to a Strava discussion, so forgive the duplication: In addition to the House of Sweden/WABA sponsored VASA ride that I’m a marshal for on Sunday the 15th, there’s the Pi Day ride on 3/14. Anyone game to do either? I’m planning to do both.

ParticipantI would ~prefer~ the Thursday, 3/26 option, but I will make any day that week (3/23 – 3/27) work. Or the weekend, if that needs to happen.

X Lowest average miles – CPTJohnC
Another TBD – CPTJohnC (still on? Have you figured this out yet?)Sorry — I’ve been woefully neglectful of the forum. Too busy getting out there for all my sleaze rides.
My idea for my second PP will be for Mr. or Ms. Consistency (assuming it doesn’t overlap someone else’s prize, hidden in a catchy title) — the person whose daily mileage shows the least variation, such that the miles they ride on any given day is as close as possible to their average daily mileage (a statistician could, I’m sure, tell me what I’m measuring here — something like very low deviation or something.)
I will put in a minimum requirement of 10 point scoring days in each of the three calendar months (to reward the regular riders), and in keeping with my philosophy of encouraging the merely ordinary, an average daily miles cap of no more than 15.
Who do I need to reach out to in order to determine how feasible my plan is? I am happy to crunch through the raw data for every rider who meets my minimum and maximum figures…

ParticipantCould combine the two into “He11’s Snowbe11s” but that sounds a little soft, if you’re looking for a name that implies crusty toughness. Whatever our name is, I’m glad you’ll have me as a part of the team, despite my sleazy tendencies…not that anyone gave you a choice…

ParticipantI plan to reprise my x lowest average miles PP, and add a new one, also probably low miles related. The x is because I don’t promise to repeat the number 7 this year. I will ensure simplicity of data munching and/or be prepared to do any work involved in figuring out the award. The prize itself will almost certainly be baked goods or other sweet treats, with or without alcohol in them.

ParticipantApologies to my future teammates: Today I waited until 9PM to take my first snow ride of BAFS (to maintain 100% riding days), instead of going out this morning, while it was still snowing. regrettably, I telecommuted today, so I shamelessly spent the day warm, dry and sitting on my butt wearing my favorite loungewear.

ParticipantStill out. I will be out of town from the 7th to the 11th. To my future team-mates: I do plan to ride while I’m gone, so I shouldn’t be dead-weight.

ParticipantI will be out of town from Jan 7-11 with limited likelihood of accessing strava using a platform that will make it reasonably likely that I can join a new team. Please, please, please let me stay on my designated team…?

I was planning to donate based on reported miles at the end of FS. But if there’s a way to make incremental donations on Crowdrise as the points are accrued, I’d be happy to do that instead.
I too was thinking about donating based on my points accrued or miles ridden (and happy to round up to an increment, as needed). I don’t see a way to handle that. Am I missing something, or do I just commit to do it, but actually donate at the end? Or make weekly donations of $10 minimum? or some other method I don’t yet see?

ParticipantAlas, I’ll be out of town that day (with or without a bike… TBD) but I will, in many ways, wish I was there.

ParticipantI was really hoping this evening’s ride would be good preparation for #BAFS2015 but alas, the temps were pretty warm, and the mist was merely dampening. I know the secret to avoiding seriously crappy weather now: bring a rain cape.

ParticipantI love the fact that from the point where I started looking at this thread this afternoon to the point where I finally caught up, the page count increased. While I read. The passion that #BAFS2015 is inspiring is… inspirational.

ParticipantI signed up. I dutifully answered all of the questions in as honest a fashion as I know how. My former teammates from the past 2 BAFS challenges will likely tell you that I am of moderate utility at best, as I am unlikely to decide to ride a random century on a Wednesday, or bike to New Jersey for the weekend.
I rode through the coldest cold days, and the snowiest of snow days last year, and am always happy to ride when I have time and no conflicting duties. However, my commuter overall miles taper off somewhat (substantially?) during the fall/winter/early spring months due to parental responsibilities, and apparently the rules do not permit me to count it as a ride if I strap my bike to the back of my car, even though my car has “Share the Road” bicycling plates.
Anyway, to my future team: sorry you’re stuck with me.

I think what you’re saying is my teams didn’t lose, I just failed them as the captain.
It isn’t necessarily all about the captain. There’s a somewhat indecipherable dynamic that just… works. Sometimes. I am pretty sure that our head of team spirit was ~not~ our captain.
Oh, and we didn’t win – We were #3. My contribution to that was small. But it was larger than our margin over the next closest team, so obviously there was something to it.
That said: I think some handicapping is useful: we don’t all ride 4AM centuries. With a broken collarbone. Or do bike advocacy as part of our jobs. But as for what separates the #3 team from #4 (at least last year)? It was very much about team dynamic – which convinced me to take way more sleaze rides than I otherwise would have at 11PM in sub 20f weather.

I would strongly suggest that team dynamics is the biggest factor in being in the top couple teams, and you can’t handicap for that.
This. I guarantee you I rode many, many more days (though not a lot of miles) because of my team. Watching Fast Friendly Guy do Strava art, and Dave (DKel) get really into things was just amazing! Did it change my riding behavior? You bet it did!
