Sounds like a good challenging ride. However, I’ll be on my way to the hills of southern Indiana that weekend. Heading to the Hilly Hundred, two days, 100 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing.

For what it’s worth, the West Glebe underpass was still closed off this morning. Anyone know what’s going on? The section of the 4 Mile Run Trail from Columbia Pike to Glencarlyn Park is now open again.

Must have been watching the same guy I saw enter the intersection heading east after the last second of yellow had counted down holding up the three cars that had just waited for an umbrella toting pedestrian to clear the crosswalk (she had put out her left hand to tell them to wait).

Only the section with the West Glebe underpass was fenced off this morning (7:30am). You just need to take the street level crossing. From what I could see, it didn’t look any worse than after other heavy rains (some mud), but there may be structual issues that can’t be seen. No notices, just the gates closed with an ectra barrier on the west end to keep you from detouring around the gates.

    Let’s see, my youth:
Grade school, lived 1.9 miles away, parents dropped me off in the morning on their way to work, but from 3rd grade to 5th grade, I either took the city bus (mostly) or walked, sometimes with my older brother. This was a medium sized college town.

Middle School, lived .4 miles away, I either walked or rode my bike. This was a large inner suburb of a major metropolitan area.

1st High School, lived 1.5 miles away, I either walked, rode my bike, or took a special city bus. Again large inner suburb.

2nd High School, lived 1.7 miles away, I either walked or rode my bike (too close for school bus per district policy). Senior year I occasionally drove, and other days usually got a ride with classmates. Another medium sized college town.

    My Son:

1st grade school on school bus (was about two miles). Large foreign capital.

2nd grade school on city bus (with adult escort) was about 3 miles. Large foreign capital.

Middle school, walked by himself .5 miles. Inner DC suburb.

High School on school bus 2.3 miles and will occassionally walk home (refuses to bicycle).
    Inner DC suburb.

As far as the article on the mom and her daughter, I can understand the line from the police and child protective services in this day and age of overprotectiveness, but don’t necessarily agree with it.

I took the old route from Shirlington over the I-395 bridge this morning because I was expecting a lot of mud under I-395 and especially W Glebe. They weren’t horrible last night at 5:30, but the water was just rising then.

I think 4 Mile Run east of EFC Metro was at its worst about 6 pm (right as I was getting home). On the W&OD the Carlin Springs underpass was flooded too deep to ride through and at the Wilson Blvd underpass the water was probably about six feet deep on the trail and moving very fast. At the electricity pylon split between Patrick Henry and Ohio Street the water was 8″ deep up to the I-66 sound wall. I didn’t go any further than Ohio. About half an hour later, the water had started to recede and was off the trail at the pylon. It was sill a mess at Wilson and on the trail through Bon Air by the bathroom the water was over three feet deep and moving so fast is was not safe to walk through. By the time (about 7:30) we had walked back around to Patrick Henry, the water level in the Run had dropped about four to five feet.

I took photos, but my card reader is on the fritz and I can’t download them to my computer.

It was interesting watching the joggers try and figure out how to get around a 15 foot stretch of water that was about six inches deep. Having one of them jump back on the trail from the rail just as I was entering the water was disconcerting. With the color of his clothing, he had blended in with the vegetation.

Thursday evening there were signs for no bikes, but the NPS guy told us we could walk the bikes (group of nine riders). The bike racks were inaccessible behind construction fencing.

baiskeli, we must have been on the trail at the same time. They passed me heading south near milepost 17, the lead gave me a hello as he approached.

The counter at the south end of the airport was done during the day yesterday. No disruption to the evening commute. Is there any reason no counter is being put on the 14th St Bridge connection?

I did the full Arlington loop this morning. In addition to the Lyon Village tree down, going sout from Memorial Bridge there were two trees down blocking the trail. Then the fence riverside on the humpback bridge was down blocking a portion of the eastside lane. If you head west on the 4 Mile Run Trail in Domion Hills, there is a tree down blocking the trail just west of Patrick Henry. Lots of debris everywhere, but overall Arlington seems to have fared better than it did in the windstorm in late July.

Going north from the DCA, the fence leading up to the humpback bridge was down blocking a portion of the eastside lane. Then there were two trees down blocking the trail as you approach Memorial Bridge.

I was on 4 Mile Run at Ohio St having just finishing my commute yesterday evening about 6 pm when I saw three or four through the trees on the W&OD heading east.
