Well done Ann!! :D This was my second year riding the BRC, this year in my new Bike Arlington jersey. My favorite thing of the ride was the tomato and hummus sandwiches (must have had at least four halves) at White Post. I kept looking for Brent, but we never managed to cross paths.

I’m on the trail every workday, year round, including the frozen wet stuff. Everytime I dare say “I’ve seen it all”, I see something new. The ninjas at night in the winter are the WORST. In the summer, the in-the-dark runners all wear bright colors, in the winter when it’s EVEN DARKER, they wear ALL BLACK! Really!? WHY?!

One guy even cussed at me for telling him every day for about two months that I couldn’t see him. He wore all black, jogging in the Reston area, in the dark. No lights. I knew he was there only because I expected him to be there. Miracle he never got clobbered.

How easy is it to find bight colored, reasonably priced athletic clothing for men? Target had lots of bright great C9 stuff for women, but you go over to the men’s area and it’s all black, navy, gray, red (which is fine only by day), dark green, etc. When I look on Sierra Trading post, again the bright stuff is all for the ladies and the dark stuff is for the guys.

I think I was counted at six different places this morning (Custis and WOD, 4MRT at I-395, 4MRT at Eads, MVT at 13 mile mark, MVT at Roosevelt Island, and finally at Lynn St and Lee Highway).

5:00/5:15 from Rosslyn, I’ll be there.

I get in about 30 miles a day year round by extending my five mile East Falls Church to Rosslyn commute to 15 miles each morning and evening. I pretty much use the same set of trails in Arlington and have added on street loops for distance or hill climbs depending on my mood. However, I’m generally not pushing any speed and am on my hybrid commuter, saving my road bike for longer weekend rides. I have a decent head light and use multiple rear lights and reflective add ons. If I was just riding for exercise, I’d ride the Arlington loop counterclockwise (going north on the MVT) in the dark to minimize the car headlight glare issues.

At 7 am today, the Falls Church Police had two cars pulled over at the Lee Highway/Washington Blvd/W&OD intersection. None of the cyclists there waiting for the light decided to go through on red though.

In the end the winds were calm all day :D, although I did keep the arm warmers on for the entire ride.

(And that was me waving at you from across the intersection yesterday AM, Consularrider. Got some interesting video at the intersection. I hope I can find the time to edit and post it.)

Yep, I recognized you. I think I got a positive comment from one of the officers this morning when I commented to the cyclist red light runner that he should also be getting a ticket. It was a good thing I was watching him, because he would have t-boned me if I had started out when the light turned green (after waiting the three seconds for the advanced walk light).

Sometimes I wonder if the extra three seconds at the start hurts more than it helps. In the morning rush when I turn left from the trail into the crosswalk, there are often cars in the right lane of the off ramp heading west who are cheating forward to turn right on red. More often than not, they are looking for a gap in the traffic heading north on Lynn and will rarely check to their right to see if there is a pedestrian or a cyclist starting to cross when the walk light is on while the traffic light is red in all directions.

It’s not unusual on my afternoon commute to see groups of three to five men in the underpasses (Mt Vernon, W Glebe, or I-395) or hanging out under the trees just east of W Glebe. However, I’ve never seen them hassle anyone or heard about it, but then I’m a 50 something male. I give a bell warning as I’m approaching and they will make sure there is room for me to pass.

There were four Arlington police officers out there this morning (two cars) a the NW corner of the intersection. Saw them waive over two cars as I approached coming from Roosevelt Island. Didn’t stop a cyclist from filtering up on the right (where there wasn’t room for him to peddle and he was pushing off the curb with one foot) of the cars stopped heading north and then running the red light himself.

actually, I neglected my nutrition yesterday…I only brought enough shotblocks for a 2 hour ride (30 miles), but it was such a beautiful day, I kept going, and ended up riding for 4 hours (60 miles). I was probably looking pretty tired. :-)

Definitely say hi! I have yet to meet anyone from the forums IRL.
