I just wish I had a longer commute. 2.5 miles is far too short.
My direct route to work is about 5 miles one way, about all I wanted to commit to when we moved back to the US four years ago. After a year of riding that, and adding some rides on weekends, I got hooked and have started looking for ways to ride more. I started out adding a loop to the ride to make it either 8 or 10 miles, but I’m lucky that I live and work near parts of the “Arlington Loop,” so I have the option of riding 5 miles one way or 12 miles the other way. Guess which one I choose 99% of the time!

If you want the speed without the work, try the speed cameras in Cheverly.
The Washington Examiner reports today http://washingtonexaminer.com/local/maryland/2011/11/speed-camera-company-quits-cheverly-equipment-challenged that the speed cameras “clocked” “bicycles were clocked going 38 and 57 mph”
The only way I would make those speeds is if the recording device were broken.
Enjoy the speed camera on Military Road in North Arlington. It’s at the bottom of a downhill stretch and it’s easy to get up to the 30 mph speed limit (and since I always obey the speed limit, that’s all I’m going to say).

ParticipantWith a three day weekend coming up, I should be doing a BBQ ride at least once.

ParticipantCCrew’s discussion has been very useful, because this was one of the points the Arlington Police Chief was making during our discussion at the Lynn/Lee crossing in September. That’s the way he and the other Arlington Police officer were interpreting the law. Distressingly, he was also saying the cyclist who enters the intersection before a car turning from the same street for a left or right cross/left or right hook, could also be found at fault (made no sense at the time or after further reflection). That was the situation of the cyclist struck there in August who received a warning ticket from best anyone could tell.

ParticipantLet me see, where is the headquarters of Trek, oh yah, Waterford, WISCONSIN. I’ve ridden north from Milwaukee several times and have had no problems with any of the small towns I’ve been in.

ParticipantThat’s my first day back, so I doubt I could get there by 4:30, but it’s on my way home so I’ll stop by.

I run a rear blinky on my seat post (PB Superflash) and one on my helmet. I want to run a third light on the clip on the back of my rack but I can’t figure out what would mount there – it looks like something should screw into the two holes in it but none of my lights kicking around the house have a mount like that.
Planet Bike sells an adapter that works with the Superflash on these rack clips. http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3108.html
@acc:My problem with people who clip their rear blinky to a backpack is that frequently the light ends up being less visible (if at all). It all depends on where they clip it because sometimes it winds up facing up or to the side instead of to the rear. This seems to be mostly a problem of riders on road bike who are stretched out and hunched over more than those on flat bar bikes. No worries if it’s not the primary light, but as I saw last night, for many it is the only rear light.

If that’s all that’s stopping you, I can assure you that there will be plenty of opportunities to give out bike lights in the future!
They finish up at 6:30, so I should be able to do both and get to the happy hour by 7 pm.

Well, if only one has food….
Another one has food, but requires suit and tie and they don’t provide bike parking…
The other is helping give out bike lights for Alexandria.
Still a tough choice.

ParticipantHave three conflicting options for that evening. How to choose?

ParticipantSo far I haven’t seen any fewer cyclists out between 7 and 8 am, actually if feels like just the opposite on non-rainy days over the past couple of weeks.

ParticipantWhen it was being set up late Monday afternoon, the workers parked their truck blocking most of the connector from the MVT to 4MRT and stood blocking the rest. Seemed clueless that they were doing this during one of the peak times for trail use.

ParticipantLooks like I’m in town this weekend after all. I up for at least getting started on this, don’t know if I’ll be able to finish.

ParticipantMost of the lights under I-395 are not just out, but missing the covers and bulbs with exposed wiring. In the two and a half years this has been open, I really don’t recall that it was ever well lit after dark or during the daytime.

ParticipantWhen we moved into our house, it already had a locking back yard shed. The shed seems to have been a wooden prefab that the previous owner put in. I have added hooks to the roof joists to hang four bikes and have whichever one I am riding the next day parked just inside my basement entrance.
