ParticipantJust a comment on numbers from this week. Today I saw only twelve other riders on my twelve mile combination of W&OD/4MRT/MVT from East Falls Church to Rosslyn between 7:15 and 8:15. I would estimate double that yesterday, and at least triple that on Monday.

ParticipantNow if only these were tech tees in hi-viz!

ParticipantI’m now down to one set of lights to give away after lighting up two riders on Thursday and one on Friday. It seems to be easier to get the attention riders going the other way on 4MRT or the W&OD. I haven’t had much luck in the MVT. There’s one ninja there I have passed a couple of times after coming around Hains Point before reaching the airport. He’s too much heads down to pay any attention.

What Jan told me tonight is that he leads a mountain bike ride at Wakefield on Tuesdays, it’s no drop but not a social ride. The time, I don’t know, I’m sure someone else here on the forum does. It sounds like a lot fun.

Their website shows a Tuesday 6:30 pm MTB ride at Wakefield.
I stopped by there on Friday after work just to look around. I talked with Jan about a couple of issues and he was very helpful.

On the Williamsburg Blvd/I-66 underpass issue, the Water Sewers Streets Bureau is going to check it out. I’ll let you know if I hear specifics on getting it fixed.
I rode this section yesterday afternoon, and the three utility cuts had been worked on and the worst one is now relatively level with the old pavement surface. Thanks to taking it to the responsible office.

Pete,
Thanks for the tip! I just rode in to work this morning before seeing this post and ended up taking CCT – Tow Path – Chain Bridge and going up Chain Bridge Road. Not as bad as I had thought, but it will probably be a different story later tonight when riding home in the dark. Any kind of map that you are willing to post would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for the offer and the good advice.

Pete leaves out how nasty a hill 41st Street is.

ParticipantThis makes the start of my fifth year of daily commuting starting in 2007 and my impression is that each year there have been a few more people on bikes. With the nice weather on Monday and Tuesday the trails were almost crowded.

ParticipantPPTC will have a Christmas Lights ride from Belle Haven on Thursday, December 15. I’m still trying to get some ideas for an Arlington one going.

ParticipantThanks Tim.
@PrintError – that sounds like what I hear referred to as “chip seal” paving on other bike fora. I ran across numerous hole patchings on FFX county roads a couple of weeks ago that seemed like this.consularrider
ParticipantI’m down to four sets to give away after attaching lights to three bikes in my bike rack at work last night. Wish I had had them with me for my ride home last night. There were lots of people out and I could have used 10 to 20 sets. I think there were several people taking advantage of the lovely weather who didn’t think about how early it is getting dark.

ParticipantBrrrrrrrr. I’llllllllllll beeeeeeee thereeeeeee.

ParticipantFor a commute, skip the convoluted path through Arlington and just take Stafford of Quincy across I-66 to the Custis Trail, stay on that (being very careful though the Ft Myer/Lynn/Lee intersections area), continue on the Mt Vernon Trail and the route in post #1.

ParticipantWhile the actual workers may be contractors, there were several uniformed NPS workers and one of the three trucks parked blocking the trail was an offical NPS truck. Also can’t figure out what all the uniformed NPS workers were doing hanging out at the Navy and Marine Memorial on the north side of the Humpback Bridge. Four trucks there. Ongoing work related to the landscaping in the area?

ParticipantThere are some inexpensive stands that are ok for working on your chain or some light work. For a fuller workstand you’ll pay over $100. Also, the curved toothed end of the brush is for cleaning between gears on your rear cassette.

ParticipantYeah, I lit up two more riders on my way home Wednesday. What I can never figure out is the cyclists with lights who won’t turn them on until it is completely dark out.
