I passed these complaints along to the Trail Manager and heard the following back,
“I have spoken to the contractor about his early arrival, trail obstruction and lack of personnel ahead of the vehicle. He agrees to correct the issues.”
Fingers crossed!
Must be nice to have clout.

It’s not easy to find with popular search engine. here’s the link: http://www.rapha.cc/festive-500
Thanks, under stories, not events, who’d a thunk it? Oh yeah, the name is different this year too.
Liz, click on americancyclo’s link for all the info. Nine days, Dec 23 -31.

I’d be up for this! Plus it might help me with the Rapha Holiday 500km Challenge.
They’re doing the challenge again this year? All I find is last year’s challenge and this year’s Turkey Takeoff. On a side note, I managed to takeoff just under half the 9,000 calorie target for the November 23 – 27 time period. Did help that I was riding with a sprained wrist. (Come on everyone, I need the pity.

ParticipantI doubt many cyclists coming east downhill towards Rosslyn were thanking them. Just before 9 am a large truck with a wood chipper attachment was trying to navigate the narrow opening of the Custis at Oak St. With the sound wall on the south and building abutments on the north it was a tight fit. By the way, there were no flag men in view warning cyclists further up the hill of the up coming total trail obstruction. There should have been a detour at Scott or Quinn so people could have gone around this work area. I was lucky since I was heading west and just got on Lee Highway by the Marriott and bypassed the mess.

We’re getting a new bridge there, to replace the narrow pedestrian bridge. Also – and I could be wrong on this – I think the trail itself will end up narrower where it’s essentially a street-width right now.
And they just redecked the narrow pedestrian bridge this fall? Where’s the planning?

Don’t know that route too well, but it looks like you could also take the Bluemont > W&OD > S.Walter Reed > NVCC > Dawes > Holmes Run
Thats the route I usually take to get to Holmes Run from the Custis/W&OD intersection. The only iffy point is crossing King St on Walter Reed, otherwise I’ve encountered no problems.

ParticipantAnd I thought they had dug the hole. :p

ParticipantWonder if they’ll be doing this less than a mile further east were the heavy rains since August have been seriously eroding the north bank on the south side of the trail. Maybe I’ll take a picture in the morning.

Lots of people out this morning on FMR and the MVT between 7:45 and 9 am. The cold weather (28-33 degrees F this morning when I was out) doesn’t seem to be slowing us down too much!
The only unavoidable icy part of the trail I saw was on the MVT just south of Memorial Bridge – about 20 feet of trail iced over. People were riding through the grass to avoid it. Be careful there.
I have a feeling we’ll be dealing with that patch of ice on the MVT on and off until the spring thaw. It seems that particular hillside “weeps” moisture across the trail unless we’re in a real dry spell, and since we had a bumper crop of rain this year I doubt it will dry out over the cold season.
I did not count the number of riders I saw this morning, but my overall impression was that it was about the same as our slightly warmer temperature of last Thursday and Friday.

ParticipantI could really have used a bunch of lights last night! There were a lot of riders out and I could have lit up at least six ninja cyclists and a few half ninjas.

ParticipantWhere would they be putting these racks, outside parking lot or indoor garage? Our building has three grill racks on one parking level and these are adequate for our needs. I agree that capacity for these is overstated, you can’t really put a bike in every slot. None of the three racks is secured to the pavement. One rack is located a the back of two deep parking spaces. Both sides of the rack are accessible and we don’t take away any parking space. The other two racks are located by the elevator core in areas where a car couldn’t park because of architectutal barriers. I would much rather be locking my bike to an inverted U rack since it does seem like it is much easier to knock over a bike in the grill rack.
Since the garage is under tight security control with 100% ID check, and limited to parking pass holders (for cars that is, bikes don’t need a pass), the locking issue is less relevant. We see a combination of cable locks, u-locks, and unlocked bikes and I have never heard of anyone have a bike stolen, or even had accessories removed.

ParticipantThere’s nothing at my department. We have a hodgepodge of internal communications that can be used and sometimes have gotten the attention of upper management.

ParticipantYou should have kept going and enjoyed the cross current on all the 4MRT ford crossings from Glencarly to Columbia Pike. I skipped that and stayed on the W&OD high road.

ParticipantI’m now out of lights for distribution. Too bad, on my way home last night someone I illumintated last week was riding with a bud. They had split the light set I gave rider #1, both had their blinky on the front handle bars only, but I had just given away my last set to a total ninja who just about took me out at the W&OD intersection with S Oakland/Court C along S Four Mile Run Dr.

ParticipantThere are usually some good displays along Patrick Henry in Arlington between I-66 and Wilson Blvd with bonus of the climb up Patrick Henry. There is one very lit up house on the 8th Pl N cul d’sac just north of Wilson.
