The meeting went well, although it was very focused on much of the infrastructure planning on a number of proposed future projects.
Hopefully the proposed Lynn St crossing bypass tunnel and Long Bridge park / MVT connector trails are included in those future projects…

ParticipantThe detective on my case just followed up with me. He spoke to the driver of the vehicle who is apparently a bicyclist himself and quite broken up over the whole situation, says he didn’t see me at all and given the curve on that stretch and the fact that I was hugging the shoulder way too tightly, I can definitely see being a possibility. Given those circumstances and the fact that I lucked out injury and damage free, I went ahead and told the detective that I’m ok with not pursuing charges. The end.

ParticipantWelcome fellow Penrose resident! That’s definitely a do-able bike commute. Google Maps bike directions will give you a fairly direct route, but one which will involve biking on Columbia Pike – there are a couple options for avoiding that particular unpleasantness – you can ride on the sidewalk until you get to Orme St, then pop up to South Gate Rd, or you can go through Fort Meyer (enter at 2nd Street, show your Driver’s License to the guard and he’ll wave you right through – then bike down through and exit directly onto South gate Rd), or you can take a more roundabout (but prettier) route and bike down Walter Reed to the Four Mile Run Trail, take that trail over to the Mt Vernon Trail and take that up to the 14th Street Bridge.

ParticipantDirt, you are a veritable font of useful bike knowledge. Thanks for sharing!

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this kind of list/news easier to track, post it here. Arlington County staff are very open with what they’ve got, but there’s often a practical barrier in updating and sharing new information.
Honestly, I think a great solution would be having a Forum Topic right here called “Bike Project Updates”, with a thread for each project in the list, and make it so only Admins can post to those threads. Then anytime there is an update to the project, just add a reply to that thread. That way it would show up as a “new post” for those of us that frequent these forums and anyone who doesn’t frequent the forums could use the built-in “subscribe to this thread / subscribe to this topic” tools to get email updates. Want to know any time a bike project is updated? Just subscribe to the whole topic area. Only want to know about one or two that are close to your daily commute? Just subscribe to those individual threads.

ParticipantOn short errands around town, I wear “normal clothes” (t-shirts and cargo shorts). On my commute or on longer riders, I wear these baggier style bike shorts, and those same Champion Wicking Shirts from Target that jrenaut mentioned. I bought mine in fire engine red for visibility.

ParticipantI love the idea – if the timing works out I’m there. Would Jay’s have a problem with my 1 yr tagging along?

ParticipantIt was my first Bike to Work Day – just started bike commuting last month. There wasn’t a pit stop on my normal commute, so I went out of my way a bit to hit the Alexandria Market Square pit stop which had the added bonus of putting me on the Mt Vernon Trail for the first time – very pretty. All in all, a great morning commute, except for witnessing the absolute last thing I wanted to see on Bike to Work Day: a fellow biker being carted off in an ambulance by paramedics. About 7am, under the Route 1 bridge on Four Mile Run trail.
Hope he’s ok.

ParticipantThanks again folks, I tested the route yesterday to make sure I understood it and to get a sense of timing – today was my first actual commute day. I’m doing Walter Reed >> Four Mile Run Trail >> Commonwealth Ave and it’s fabulous. Looking forward to the day when I can make it back up the Walter Reed Dr hill – I think it’s going to be a while though.

ParticipantThanks so much for the responses! I’ll ride both the Mt. Vernon Trail version and the Commonwealth Ave version and see how they feel and how long they take. (hopefully this weekend)
