Rumor has it Clark/Bell is getting a Northbound cycle-track as part of the two-way conversion, at least between 12th and 20th – possibly farther.

It may have just been too wet to pour concrete this week. The sidewalk project on my street made not a peep of activity all week until today – finally realized it was probably because concrete can’t cure in the rain.

Here’s the response I just received:

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the missing pavement markings on Walter Reed Drive. We are working to get those sharrows reinstalled. They were not done with the other markings due to a contractual issue, but I assure you we have not forgotten about them. I hope to have them installed this fall. As pavement markings are weather dependent, if they are not installed this fall they will be a priority for whatever warm days we may have during the winter and will be near the top of the list in the spring when marking efforts resume in earnest.

If you have any other questions about this issue, please let me know.

    Sincerely,

    Patricia Bush

I’m 90% certain that South Glebe is a VDOT road so they have control over what happens. In my opinion a fence is the wrong solution – just something else to run into. They just need to reallocate space on the bridge. The north side of that bridge has a PARKING LANE. Bridges cost how much to build and we’re using an 8′ wide section of it for the free storage of private vehicles?! Reallocate that parking lane to the sidewalks on each side and it’d be almost roomy.

Ditto; also likely a wife in tow for the after-ride-festivities.

A metric ton of map improvements went live over the weekend. (a bunch of bike lanes, the Rock Springs Park Trail, all the Bluemont Junction connector trails, Troy Park Connector, more I’ve forgotten)

You may want to give this tool another look next time you’re planning a route.

Today is the last day to submit comments.

You can review their presentation here if you’d like.

A few ideas my fellow cyclists might want to consider mentioning:
+ Secure, covered bicycle parking at all major transit stations.
+ Improve bicycle and pedestrian access points to all major transit stations.
+ Secure, covered bicycle parking and shower/locker facilities at all new office development in the region.
+ Laws/Policies across the region requiring employers to allow employees to “cash out” any free parking that is offered.
+ Laws/Policies across the region forbidding the bundling of free parking spaces with residential leases in new residential development.
+ Performance parking at all major transit stations.

Another interesting tidbit about the route area: construction STILL has not started on the planned Chambliss ST bridge, which was supposed to be done around now.

I see I’m not the only one whose mind was jogged about that project – I pinged Carrie Sanders from Alexandria about that on Friday. Her response:

It is expected to start construction within the next few months. Completion would be in the winter/spring.

I found the bike. Apparently the thief abandoned it in the Walter Reed Dr bike lane.

Have they recently repaved the street? I remember Slaters being pretty bad for potholes and bumps.

Yes, they repaved recently – that’s what prompted the change. Like Arlington, Alexandria tends to implement bike lane markings as repaving happens so as to get more bang for their buck (it’s gonna have to be restriped anyway, so their is little additional cost to putting bike lanes/sharrows/whatever down)

At the very least they certainly won’t make it through snow plow season :)
