ParticipantThe bike lane will go all the way to Wakefield once the work is done. That is why the bump out was removed.

They’ve been pretty adamant that they will never do it for the reasons PC cited. I wish they would just do some speed enforcement during normal hours at the Belle View spot.
We were THIS CLOSE to automated speed enforcement…and then this happened. *sigh* My understanding is that the cameras were never activated.

ParticipantThe South Courthouse Road Complete Streets Project will add bike lanes on South Courthouse Rd between 6th Street S and Columbia Pike.

ParticipantI’m told the Washington Blvd Trail Phase II is in “final VDOT review”
VDOT’s ongoing Route 50 / Courthouse Rd / 10th Street interchange project is hugely improving / extending the Arlington Blvd Trail in that area. Arlington is also applying for a State Grant to extend / improve the trail between Washington Blvd and the new VDOT section.

ParticipantI put up a post on my blog about it encouraging folks to write the county if anyone wants to reference it in a Blog Post, Facebook Share, Tweet, etc.

ParticipantProof that LAB should poll each applicant’s cyclists on Social Media about why their city is NOT bike friendly before awarding a level.
I bet it would be quite illuminating.

ParticipantI’ve emailed the County Manager and County Board suggesting that this would be an excellent expenditure to include in the budget close-out (where the board decides what to do with any money that didn’t get spent in the current fiscal year) because I believe that process is happening in November. It certainly wouldn’t hurt if others made the same suggestion. Even if it is too late to get it included in closeout it will demonstrate support for including it in next year’s budget.

I probably don’t want to know how much they’ve spent on reconfiguring that stretch right before it gets ripped out again.
Exhibit A in how good projects go wrong
Also relevant: who knows when (or if) 1000 N Glebe will go to construction. It could be next year, it could be a decade from now, it could fall through completely.

First time I’ve ever heard of that trail referred to as part of the W&OD. It’s located in Del Ray, almost a mile away from the official trail head in Shirlington.
It does, in fact, follow the old Washington & Old Dominion Railway right-of-way; that’s the only W&OD connection though.

ParticipantTrying to get back for Virginia specifically, Cuccinelli voted against a bill requiring hands-free cell phone use. I’m sure there are other interesting votes from the time he was in the Senate if anyone wants to go digging.

ParticipantBe sure to let Alexandria know that you wish they’d mandated a better design from the developer.

WOD/Columbia Pike is another favorite. And if we have leftovers, where would the group like to see a third?
Shirlington Connector seems smart.

In reality, nothing they say about transportation matters at all.
The legislature decides how much to spend, but the executive branch largely decides how to spend it. The Governor, for instance, appoints all members of the Commonwealth Transportation Board which determines project priority for all state transportation projects. See also head of VDOT, state appointees to the Metro board, etc.
Considering how awfully McDonnell wielded that power I shudder to think what a slate full of Cuccinelli appointees would do.
