All I could think about while reading the article was how awesome it would be to rip out Metro rails and have those be dedicated bike paths.

Why stop there? Rip out the beltway!

Totally mis-read this challenge. I thought it was 400 in four days!!! 14 days is much more manageable, i actually have a chance to complete this one!

Yeah, they challenge you to do it in as few rides as possible, but you are given 14 days to actually complete it.

It’s a shame this is a federal installation with cameras all over.

It’s also a shame the guards like me, greet me in the morning by name, and know of my efforts to bike to work as much as possible. They’re very nice guards… too nice to have the guy towed :( but they did look up his plate number and call him, told him to move it.

Some others do park in this spot, there’s a BE-A-U-tiful Cobra Mustang that parks here occasionally. He parks off to the side and leaves me tons of room to park. I told him once to make sure he doesn’t scratch my bike! He shouldn’t park there anyways, and hasn’t been lately because he knows I’m biking more and more, but this prick in the photos not only took up the entire spot, but backed up so close to the rack too. I seriously almost locked my bike to his car, but figured my bike would get jacked up, and it’s my nice one (nicest I have anyway). Also, I thought WWDD, and didn’t want to escalate. I almost did pepper spray the door handle, leave him something for later LOL

Never mind that there are a LOT of other spots open, some much closer to the building entrance…

Here is a recent thread that discussed lighting, in detail

Yeah, I figured there would be plenty of starts/stops/me-walking-up-hills LOL I was just trying to throw a number out there so people had an idea of my riding speed. I hate getting in groups with people who say “oh, it’s OK, we won’t drop you” only to hold them up and make them wish they’d dropped me hah. Thanks for all the advice. It sounds like I won’t have to cry in a corner because no one wants to play with a kind old clown (aren’t I sweet looking?)

Pro-tip: Pack all your gear up the night before and have everything ready to go. That way, in the morning it’s more of a hassle to unpack everything than it is to just bike in!

I do, and did last night. All packed and ready to go, even the water bottles. Unfortunately, even with that, I have to get up an hour earlier to bike vs. drive. So when I’m tired or didn’t sleep well, that extra hour of sleep in the morning is golden :( I just slipped my pannier off the bike and carried it in :p If my commute wasn’t so damn long……

Welcome! This is definitely the place to get info, the combined miles of commuting by the forum members here is enough to go to Mars and back (well, that’s what I heard).

The commuter sub-forum has TONS of info already listed. And the search function is awesome (just search “dirt” and you’ll get all the info you need)

So, who all is signed up for this now? (it’s sold out if you’re not).

I’m planning on doing the 50 States ride, and am hoping to find some riding partners. At least for part of the ride, I might bail if I get too tired later on. It will be my biggest ride since I started back up riding (plenty of century rides in the past… 10 years ago lol). It’s also quite challenging as has been noted, so I’ll be looking for a 12-13 MPH average I guess, even that might be optimistic.

“You’re not stuck in traffic, you ARE traffic”. Which is actually a quote from a TomTom ad I guess, still it’s related to transportation and goes through my mind on days I (foolishly) drive instead of bike and get caught up on the beltway.

SOOO mad I didn’t ride today, it is gorgeous out there! I should’ve at least packed the bike in the back of the car so I could ride home. I recently asked about leaving my car at work and they were cool with it. It’s a gated parking lot with 24 hour guards, so such an awesome option. I can drive in Monday morning with all clothes for the week, then bike home that afternoon and only bike home (the hard 1/2 of the commute) when I want, whether it’s Tuesday evening or Friday evening.

aaaand once again, I’m pissed at myself. I couldn’t get to sleep last night, and was too groggy this morning at 6 to realize how much I needed to ride in. So, Monday – beautiful day I don’t ride, Tuesday – crappy Armageddon weather that I ride in, Wednesday – another beautiful day I don’t ride…. damnit. I’ve done my commute enough times now that the ride itself is the easy part, the waking up to do it is the hard part :(

I don’t enjoy putting gasoline in my car.

I enjoy putting fuel in my stomach.

interestingly, I was doing a (very) rough calculation of costs for me the other day. My ~47 mile commute costs me $3.20 in bus fair (which cuts 10 miles off an already too long commute), then the food costs because I do eat more when I bike. My car gets 35 MPG, and is about 54 miles, so roughly 1.5 gallons or $6 of gas. I won’t even calculate my time, 4 hours door-to-door basically for the round-trip bike and about 45-60 minutes door-to-door car.

Is it cheaper to bike? Not really. I used to ride Metro from Bethesda to Suitland instead of driving, 90 minutes on Metro vs. 45 in the car (my commutes are against the flow of rush traffic). Metro was definitely more expensive. I just hate driving in this area. I hate the drivers in this area. I’d rather spend more money on food to fuel myself for 4 hours of cycling to go 47 miles plus bus ride, and $3.20 bus fare to get to work. It’s all the “intangibles” that add up for me that just can’t be overcome by the negatives that driving brings.
